Hi,

Since Adobe just increased their price with 33% I'm cancelling my subscription. Just can't justify these big jumps in pricing anymore.

Is there a good alternative that matches the great experience Lightroom + Photoshop offers? Especially on the M1 Mac Pro.

DXO Photolab 9 is on my radar. I've tried Luminar but it was trash in terms of speed in the earlier versions. Any progress on their part?

I especially really like the amazing AI masking features of Lightroom and Photoshop. But since I'm not a professional photographer paying 240 euros each year is a bit steep.

I have a Sony A7CR and Leica Q (first version) which I both use.

If you are existing subcriber, price did not change. I just renewed my subscription in August for the same price. You just have to pay it annually instead of monthly.

Changing software requires effort as commonly people try to force new software to operate in the same way as the old software. Even though controls may have similar names they won't necessarily work in the same way.

Affinity Photo V2 is the obvious alternative to PS. £68 (inc 20% tax). The last version had 5 years of free updates.

For raw processing there are a range of alternatives depending on what you need.

If DAM is everything; Acdsee Ultimate 2026.

Best demosaic, optical corrections, denoise; DXO-Photolab Elite V9. Although it is an expensive option as you need Viewpoint and Filmpack for full functionality.

General purpose; ON1 PhotoRaw 2026.

Black Friday is coming so that's the best time to buy.

You will still be able to access your Lightroom catalogue and export any edited images but you can no longer use the Develop module for further edits.

I found that I only wanted to redevelop certain images for specific purposes and when I edit an old image I achieve a different result as experience and taste change with time and the new tools available.

I believe you have to export xmp files for your images if you want any new software to read keywords etc when they access the file for the first time.

I know that if you pay in advance for a full year the price remains the same in theory. But with a monthly subscription I've always used the retention offer they give you when you cancel your account. Which makes the pricing a whole lot less yearly compared to now paying everything in advance.

Next to that I've noticed that when you want the same subscription I have now you pay 25 euro's each month. So you will be locked in for life or if you ever want to cancel you have to be prepared to pay an even bigger price increase each month if you want to use the products again. It just doesn't feel like something I want to do anymore. Especially since I only use the products a few months in the whole year. I think I'm just not the target audience anymore.

So I don' have to write the whole thing out again. I just renewed on Sept 2nd and I paid the same price as I did in 2018.

I'd really miss the catalogue. Since it does not control my file storage locations and just works on the sidelines I never even think about it. Only time I do is when I chat about it on a forum. I have years edited files that I can export if needed. However is not important to everyone. I'm not trying to convince you to stay with Adobe. This is for other readers. There is a misconception about the catalogue out there about how it takes control over your files. It doesn't. The user has total control over file storage.

Careful. Saying you don't need catalogue functionality can be regarded as heresy. 😀

I used LR from V1-6 but moved from LR to C1 for the better UI, ease of use etc (for me) and so that I could avoid the catalogue import stage in LR.

You need to check camera support on any potential software. Eg ACDSee doesn't appear to support Leica Q or on a7CR – Lossless Compression (S) and Lossless Compression (M) shooting modes are not supported.

Just for other readers which I'm sure you know. The only reason for importing is so LrC can read the files metadata and add it to the catalogue database. It has nothing to do with the actual files themselves. It does not create a duplicate set of files either. I can open LrC, Canon's DPP, DXO PL, C1Pro, ON1, etc and I will see the same file structure because it is the common one on your OS.

You do have to be mindful when moving a folder because database needs to know its location. Easiest way to do this is using LrC because you can move it and forget about it. If you use your OS when in LrC you just need tell it where you moved it. After that you will see that change on all the apps folder structure displays I mentioned in the previous paragraph. I've even edited using other apps and it does not affect the LrC edits.

Not everyone likes the catalogue which is understandable. Generally there is nothing to it. Just thought I'd mention it.

What Ian Yorke said about work needed when changing apps is absolutely right, and can't be understated. I dropped Adobe when they went subscription years ago, and have been using Capture One and Affinity Photo since. I'm happy and can do everything I need/want to. But there was an initial learning curve, and I've continued learning with each update I bought (I'm on perpetual licenses, and haven't found anything in their last several updates to warrant me upgrading).

I've seen quite a few posts from long-time LR users who switch to Capture One. Among other things, the "similarly labeled" sliders don't function the same in the 2 apps, some corrections need different adjustments, Capture One layers don't work quite like Adobe layers, and so on. Similarly, Affinity Photo compared with PS is, for me, analogous to decades ago when you had a choice between algebraic and RPN calculators. You got the same results, but the thought/entry process to get them was different. Affinity apps have a very different methodology to Adobe and require some learning (Affinity Revolution has lots of excellent tutorials).

Also, keep in mind that if you switch from LR, your edits are frozen and if you want to change something, you'll likely need to start from scratch in your new app. Things like cropping may carry across, but not most things.

So before switching, I hope you do serious trials of the apps you're thinking about. You might find staying with Adobe is cost effective when you consider what's involved in changing...

Nothing will really match what Adobe offers. But alternatives with many of the same capabilities exist.
Especially on the M1 Mac Pro.

DXO Photolab 9 is on my radar. I've tried Luminar but it was trash in terms of speed in the earlier versions. Any progress on their part?
More alternatives are Capture One, which is rather pricey, and ACDSee and ON1 Photo RAW, which are less costly than PhotoLab.
I especially really like the amazing AI masking features of Lightroom and Photoshop.
Now that PhotoLab has AI masking, it's a fairly standard feature among photo apps.

I think ON1 claims to be able to honour Lightroom edits but don't know anything about to what effect.

Yes, LR doesn't touch your files on the hard disk they stay in the folders that you initially put them in, LR just indexes their location.

Thanks. Also LrC will move your files after import if you instruct it do so. You can also tell from what location you want to import from. Or apply no instructions and move folders around as you like. The user is in total control.

Here are some Mac apps for consideration that have much lower cost and offer a perpetual license:

APPLE: Photomator (Lightroom alt) and Pixelmator Pro (Photoshop alt). Both apps offer AI Masking. Apple bought the Pixelmator company a few months ago and these are very Mac like programs; more so than apps developed for both Windows and Mac like DxO PL. Search this forum for discussion of these apps.

CANVA: Affinity Photo offers some AI masking as a Photoshop replacement. Check out BF sale for the entire suite including Publisher and Design.

DxO: PhotoLab Pro Elite. Now offers AI Masking is a fantastic RAW editor.

GENTLEMEN CODERS: Nitro Photo. Raw Editor from the lead programmer of Apple Aperture back in the day.

SKYLUM: Luminar Neo. Liked by some hated by others. It is much faster prior versions of Luminar. Try the free trial first.

There are many more but these are some good ones to start with. Also this question has been asked many times...search this forum.

Last time I tried it (about a month ago), performance of Luminar Neo is reasonable overall, but I noticed that it does not use the GPU for its AI tools (the GPU is just used for the animation of Neo doing AI work), so my 5070 Ti (or other higher-end GPUs) did not really offer a performance benefit in Neo.
