Now this may sound like G.A.S. and I'll admit that there may be a touch of that involved, but...

I'm very happy with my X-S20 as a travel camera. And travel meaning largely overseas, guided tour type stuff.

I'm retired and while my main hobby is Amateur Astronomy, where I live makes that challenging for half of the year so I'm looking at photography to fill in as another hobby.

As such, my photography would center around scenic/landscape work and involve travel by car. Maybe some wildlife in the mix but nothing moving. I'm not into BIF and such.

Also, NO video.

I've been eyeing the X-H2 with its larger sensor (main reason). But, having handled one at my local camera store I see other things that I like. A much better EVF (compared to the X-S20), the top LCD, and its seeming ability to better balance heavier lenses.

My question is, what else might it offer over the X-S20 that would make getting one sensible? Or, should I just stick with the X-S20 and be happy? :-)

I just purchased a X-H2s to replace my X-S20. It arrives soon, but the main reasons I went for the upgrade were for the top screen, weather sealing, improved grip, and EVF. I also really like having a D-Pad and more customizable buttons and modes. The performance improvements are really just a bonus.

For me, the price differential was about $550. which is well worth it in my opinion. Would you really need both cameras, or could you get along with traveling with the X-H?

sensor size is the same, all the fuji X are aps-C cameras..

you mean higher resolution?

i own the X-H2 and it's a really nice camera, spacially if you use larger lens, has a nice gris, and as you said has a really good EVF, and a better AF if you mean about it..

meanwhile i bought an X-T50. EVF is not great (i thins is the same as your camera) but same sensor as the X-H2 in a much much smaller and lighter body, and it's great for travel, specially with small prime (i bought back an 18mm f2) and if you don't need to shooting tethered.

only downside is the old NP-W126S battery.

may be you should consider the X-T5. Same sensor as X-T50 and X-H2, Evf is not as good as the X-H2 but better then you camera, use the same batteries, and same "classic" dials (in opposite to the PSAM paradigm)

I’ve looked at both the X-T5 and X-T50 I did not like either one. They are both less comfortable ergonomically than my X-S20 mainly because the grip is small to almost not existent. The real issue with both of them is EVF. It is almost impossible to view through for me. I wear glasses and I need a certain amount of eye relief. It may be the design of the eyecup, but even with it removed, I still could not see the full field of view even if I press my eyeglasses right up to it. The X-S20 is much better in this regard. It’s still a little tight, but it’s completely usable. Also I have no nostalgic inclination to want to fiddle with dials constantly. I’m happy with a PSAM dial and the front and rear control dials to make changes.

About the Evf X-T5 and X-H2 share the same eye point of 24mm, and same sized EVF panel (0.5 inch) and magnification is 0.80x for both, but X-H2 use a 5.76 vs 3.69 million dots panel, for comparison your X-S20 use a .39 inch panel with 2.36 million dot with 17.5mm eyepoint and 0.62x magnification, so if you wear glasses both X-T5 and X-H2 will be a nice upgrade

X-T50 use exactly the same evf as X-S20 AFAIK, so it's strange you see differences between the 2.

looking at she specs both use a 0.39 inch OLED panel, 2.36 million dots, eyepoint of 17.5mm, magnification of 0.62x and same diopter adjustment range

If the things you called out such as better EVF will help your photography then go for it.

i will investigate on this point, may be different internal optics? i don't have a X-T5 at the moment for comparison..

or it's possible the X-T5 diopter adjustment was completely off for you?

Well, I was able to get the diopter should be adjusted properly, but I think part of it might have to do with the shape of the rubber eye cup. On the X-T5 it’s the same as it is the X-H2 it seems to be keeping me too far back with my glasses on. The X-S20 has a very flush rubber ring, which allows me to get close enough with my eyeglasses touching that rubber ring to allow me to see the full field.

yes, make sense.. in X-H2 and X-T5 you can replace the eyecup, when i am outside i often use the large eyecup, if you shoot horizontal can make sense

If the eyecup could be replaced with a much flatter one like the X-S20 that might take care of that problem. Unfortunately, the other issues with EXT5 body still exist for me.

I can't help with your decision, but wanted to add regarding my humble experience regarding the X-T5 vs X-S20's EVF. I handled both cameras at a store recently and also came to the conclusion the X-T5's EVF, albeit larger, was more difficult to see into the corners when wearing glasses. Its grip was also quite awkward, gripping the camera with the right hand and left hand under the camera body (and small 35mm f/2 lens) was uncomfortable. I know it sounds weird coming from the X-T30 which has an even smaller grip, but that was my experience.

this one?

Possibly. I need to go back to the camera shop grab that X-T5 and take its rubber eye cup off completely then see whether I can get close enough with my glasses. I think I did that already but I’ll try to do that again just to be sure.

Marketing people...

I have both the X-S20 and X-H2. The X-S20 fits my hand size better but the X-H2 fits better than the X-H1. I use the X-S20 for times when I want to travel and go small and also as a backup camera for video. The X-H2 comes out for family gatherings like reunions where I take group pictures of up to 50-60 people and also for our Christmas card photo. The X-H2 has a much better EVF and also handles heavier lenses better. I had the X-H2s for a while but found myself using the then X-S10 and now the X-S20 more often so I sold it. I think they complement each other quite well and it is easy to set them up the same so switching back and forth is not an issue.

The X-H2 would be too large for travels. I really like the size, weight, and ergonomics of the X-S20. That one with the new 16-50mm lens is a perfect kit for me for travel.

Marketing people...
It’s not marketing. The term “resolution” has always been used in this way in digital imaging. It’s not the same thing as lens resolution, but it is resolution.

I just purchased a X-H2s to replace my X-S20. It arrives soon, but the main reasons I went for the upgrade were for the top screen, weather sealing, improved grip, and EVF. Actually, I received my X-H2s yesterday and I agree with your point. The size difference is underrepresented in pictures. The X-H2s is much closer to a DSLR than an X-S series camera. I will travel with it later this month anyway to see if I can get along with it long-term.

Other than the size, the rest of the camera is a series of little upgrades over the X-S that amount to an overall huge difference. The bigger EVF is great, I know the top screen is a novelty/gimmick but I like using it, the button layout and D-Pad are nice to work with. Even the strap lugs are nicely built into the body instead of poking out of the body!

One annoyance though is the minimum shutter speed of 1/500 in auto iso ......
