The OMD M1.2 is vastly better for indoor shots

The M1.2 can handle ISOs using JPEG to 6400 and be usable on social media.

The autofocus nails every shot.

If there is the slightest chance of indoor shots the one and only camera for a beginner should be at least an OMD M1.2.

As I understand it, the OM1 series is two stops better for JPEG.

But the previous sensor is plenty good enough.

Humm... better than what?

He also ignored quite a few other bodies with that 20MP sensor first introduced in 2016 with the E-M1.2.

I don't think that there has been any improvement in sensor low light noise since that sensor. All the noise improvements have been in AI noise reduction software either in camera or in PP.

I'm assuming you're noting the progression from E-M1 to E-M1 mkii.

Similar, found the mkii better in every possible regard and was thrilled by the upgrade. The final bow on the package was the FW update that brought M1X focusing code and several of its features.

It remains a viable camera today, many years after its release.

Cheers,

Rick

Better than what?

I found the OM-1 has much improved low light sensor noise and can be shot at much higher ISO.

Yes, I still use the EM5.3 a lot. I have an OM-1 but it doesn't make a better image for general photography in most cases. The AF System is of course noticeably better for focusing on moving subjects using subject detection and it has more features and functions but the IQ is similar. I would use the OM-1 for the menus alone, they are so much better.

Better than the previous 12mp and 16mp sensors.

And the improvement in autofocus is immense.
The M1X, M1.3, M5.3, and OM1.1 and OM5 ought to be even better, and the OM1.2 the best.

I am not a photographer.

I’m a propagandist.

The shots I took last night have all been reduced to .3 MP and sent across social media.

They are sharp, in focus, and few have blurred backgrounds.

Any Olympus 16mp camera would have worked but not nearly as well or as reliable.

That little dog was a trooper. He never barked or whined or snapped and the crowd loved him.

A man who could have such a nice wife and dog can’t be all bad, you know?

The 1.2 is a good camera, but these photos certainly don't show it. These look like photos that could've been taken with any modern smartphone camera.

True. But if you seen more of Humansvillians posts, you'll notice lately he's buying quite a bunch of camera's (old and new) and is just very happy with every single one of 'em. Consider him as a happy collector (not a reviewer) and maybe you'll enjoy his enthousiasm

Those photos are being passed around along the folks that were either at the event or missed it.

The trouble with using a smart phone is you can’t the the official photographer unless you have a real camera.

There are rules about such things, you know?

I don't think that there has been any improvement in sensor low light noise since [E-M1.2] sensor. All the noise improvements have been in AI noise reduction software either in camera or in PP.
The OM-1 sensor has native ISO to 25600 and extended ISO to 102400, versus 6400 and 25600 respectively for the E-M1.2. Extended ISO is usually noisier than equivalent native ISO.

Honestly at those kind of settings shooting in low light { my only use of high ISO } I would exchange better with a bit less awful

This is the OM-1 VS E-M1 2 at 6400 ISO and 12800 ISO low light samples . It is not just m43 if you look at sensors of the same size and MP count the advances are much the same, with 1/3rd to 1/2 a stop being about the difference in raw . The advances in NR software are moving faster than sensors

6400 ISO

I think there is a bit of a difference in high ISO use that causes folk to have different takes on things . If you are using high ISO in reasonable light for a faster shutter speed . You will get better results than those using high ISO for say moving subjects in very poor light. I tend to shoot in the latter and for me the differences are not huge

I don’t understand the difference.

OK light with very high shutter speed vs very poor light and ordinary’ shutter speed …
Surely it’s the EV that’s significant.

This post is just an excuse to share ones political views

If you're going through Hell , just keep going.
If you're going to Hell , turn back.
Republicans have about an 80% majority around here but they don’t hold big meetings and invite the public.

They’d be fun to photograph, if they’d hold pow wows where you could, you know?

I think my issue is when there is movement and you need a certain shutter speed which may force your hand in poor light . The differences in noise are very clear . The DPreview test shots in normal light and low light show this

The good light tests at 12,800 ISO { 1/5000th at F/5.6 } which say BIF shooters may use . Whereas the low light shot { 1/40th at F/5.6 } a shutter speed inadequate for shooting moving people is closer to what I would use though with a faster shutter speed. There is no way to expose as well as you can in decent light. They are not a perfect facsimile but do a reasonable job of representing the different use cases . As well as noise colour takes a hit.

Shot noise is the culprit when there is less light, signal-to-noise ratio of the light itself gets worse.

Of course if you are shooting a static subject you can get better results { much better :-) }
