Got Z8 strap eyelet (lug) issue fixed

do we actually know there is a pin ?

I logged in with NikonUSA yesterday, was told my Z8 was subject to the TSA recall (eyelets), was given a packing slip but no shipping label. NikonUSA also sent me an email with the packing slip, again, without any shipping label or instruction. My question is did I do something wrong? Will NikonUSA be shipping me a shipping label and a box to send in the Z8 for repair? I don't even have an address for NikonUSA to ship the camera to.

I have not put the strap on the camera, probably won't anyway. Wondering if folks who don't use the strap plan to have their cameras repaired.

You will receive a label when Nikon is ready to do the repair.

For your second question, I don’t use a strap that attaches to these eyelets. I will probably have it repaired eventually (mainly for possible resale in the future), but I’m going to wait for a while.

I don’t think we do for certain, but I’ve seen one photo of a lug that has come out, and it has a hole drilled through it. The suggestion is that a pin goes through this hole, and holds the lug in the body.

Hi. I got my shipping label today. I boxed it up myself. The label is for UPS Ground service. I dropped it off at a UPS store this morning. I'm hoping to get it back by the end of next week.

I sometimes use a True North wrist strap, but always use a Black Rapid system. I attach it to the tripod foot of my long lens, or, the L-Plate with shorter lenses. BR also makes a plate that allows you to carry the camera with their strap, and it folds down so you can use a tripod.

Hope this helps.

As far as I understand, Nikon USA is trying to space the repairs out so that they won't get way too many jobs at once and customers will have some unnecessarily long wait. They should e-mail you an UPS shipping lable when they are ready to take your camera.

Since you are on the West Coast, most likely yours will go to Nikon's repair center in Signal Hill, which is in Long Beach in the Los Angeles area. I have been to that repair center once myself, in person: https://www.nikonusa.com/en/service-and-support/service-and-repair.page

You are probably better off getting it fixes a little later, perhaps in a few weeks, at a time that is convenient to you and hopefully the peak is over. If you won't use the strap, not repair is an option, but should you try to sell your Z8 in the future, your potential buyers may want to know this history.

Thanks, David. I will just wait for the shipping label then. It's amazing NikonUSA never told me the shipping label is forthcoming. Here's the email they sent me:

Attached you will find a PDF document with shipping instructions

Here's what you need to do next:

  1. Confirm all the information in your Product Repair Packet is correct.
  2. Print your packing list and shipping label.
  3. Ship your product, any included accessories and the packing list to Nikon.
  4. Please allow one business day for processing after received by the Nikon Service Department. To check the status of your order, please visit us online at:
    https://www.nikonusa.com/en/service-and-support/service-and-repair.page
*Please note, seasonal volume or repairs requiring special parts may add more time.
Sincerely,
Nikon Service

"Note: one thing that has caught a couple people unawares, including myself, is that we're all fast to click through on inter pages. That page with the I Understand button on it says that you won't immediately get a shipping label. NikonUSA is scheduling repairs, so what's going to happen with so many cameras needing the fix is that there are going to be delays in getting it done. It's basically a first-come, first-served queue that's being set up. The email NikonUSA is currently sending as you finish your repair request says in Step 2 to print your packing list and shipping label, which many, including me, are reading to imply we already have them. You only have the packing list at the end of the repair request process. A shipping label will be sent when Nikon is ready to work on your camera."

Not right away ... I don't use the neck strap ... use a Black Rapid if ever ...

Nikon will make this repair years from now at no cost ...

Look at the photos here:

Re: Another confirmed Z 8 strap lug failure: Nikon Z Mirrorless Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review (dpreview.com)

The strap lug has a hole in it for a probable pin, why else would the hole the there? The hole where the strap lug goes into on the camera has a corresponding hole at the bottom of the squared off section of the hole? Again, why would that hole be there? Coincidence that we have two corresponding holes that line up on the lug and in the body? I think not, especially when you consider that a pin or retaining screw would be the very item that would secure the strap lug nicely into the camera so that the strap lug would not come out.

thanks for info. What the tech said doesn't match up entirely with this:

Re: Woot! Free Z8 cleaning by Nikon! In reply to PLShutterbug • 16 hours ago3

my local repair technician advised me its a design flaw, old lugs will need to be removed and Nikon has sent them a new lug with improved design.
And out of the two possibilities here of truth...I think I prefer the redesigned lugs (perhaps with the locking pin braized on at right angles) than this glue fix but yeah...
Someone should put some kind of scratch mark on their eyelet to see if what comes back is a replacement or not.

Thanks @ghostfox_1, for the Thom Hogan article and the quote. The NikonUSA page I used was https://www.nikonusa.com/en/service...ories-for-users-of-the-nikon-z-8-cameras.html

I read it again but still didn't find the verbiage that said the shipping label would come later, nor did I find the "I understand" button. It's good to know though. What you said also agreed with what other folks have said. So I'm quite sure you're correct. However, neither the email I received from NikonUSA, nor the acknowledgment I received after inputting my serial number said anything to that effect. Below is the Acknowledgment I received from NikonUSA which clearly said a printable shipping address label and the packing list are available together. Oh well!

Your repair service request has been received!

Here is your Product Repair Packet. It contains a summary of your order, your packing list and a printable shipping address label.
(We also will email this to you.)

P.S. I'm not trying to be argumentative. Just think NikonUSA should do a better job with its communications. I suspect I'm not the only one getting confused.

It sounds like a credible fix and that’s great.

However still have questions, what changed from the D850,D5,D6,Z9?

Thought that we might have a press or interference fit to avoid glue in initial manufacture, my hypothesis. So my guess is some kind of failure in manufacture of pins or hole diameter to prevent the press fit required.

Anyway good hearing how quickly it was done.
