Photographers are NOT normal.

What sort of normal are we, sub, ab or para?

I see myself as normal normal and phone users as some lesser breed of beings that can only exist when clutching a powered-on phone in their sweaty hands, just in case someone needs to talk to them. It smacks of some sort of insecurity complex.

I admit to having a phone but never use it, I must admit that I'm not nice to talk to anyway.

To me, if you don't display your work (or sell it or give it away to others) I don't see the point. Printing at commercial labs, even drug stores has gotten very cheap and the results are excellent.

If you are not printing your work and putting it on your walls, on a digital display or sending them to other people to enjoy what is the point?

If they are just going on a massive hard drive never to see the light of day again it seems like some sort of unhealthy self stimulation.

When I have my camera(s) with me, my senses are heightened, I observe the world around me, I'm motivated to get out there and have fun, and I thouroughly enjoy looking at my cameras and lenses and figuring out what I will take with me on my next vacation!

I do display my photos, but other than the occaisonal photos on this forum only with family and friends. But, they only see a fraction of what I have on my hard drive.

Then you are clear-sighted... which can be useful to use a camera. But if you're lucid, you cannot be totally normal.

Anyway, I like reading your posts, forums are great for this, one can enjoy other people thoughts without having to call them.

My phone plan involves buying AU$15 vouchers from Aldi, they expire after 12 months and I managed to only use AU$7 or so of the AU$15 last year, and most of that was due to the micro charges that the Aldimobile call system uses to keep track of the phone.

Nature photographers are exhorted to replace caught insects etc back in the wild, I wonder if they leave the roaches in the frig to breed unmolested, do they swot flies or poison rodents? Not me, cos I am normal.

We have 3 digital frames in the house.

We also gave digital frames to both of our kids.

All can be loaded with pictures by email.

When the grand kids are with us and I take pictures or if I take pictures on a once in a lifetime trip, I share selected shots through email to the frames. The mother load goes to smug mug where they can look and down load.

The hardest part of that equation is buying the frame. From there, it's a breeze

I do have some traditional prints on the family room wall as well.

I take them to view and share.

I may share them with family if I can be bothered, knowing full well that 90% of them couldn't care less. I may print some once a year. I think I'm normal... but then I came on this forum.

Are you implying that you dislike being badgered, insulted, and humiliated or inflicting the same on other innocent photographers?

The point is keeping the memories.

I am 100% guilty of having hard drives stuffed with images and basically never printing.

They do see the light of day in that I randomly at times wander back through the years to have a look at what we did in Vietnam or Japan or Singapore or Ireland or wherever the heck we've been over the years.

Often those trips are so busy and we see and visit so many places and also take many shots (but not as many as we should) so then we have a picture "gallery" on the hard drive to view on a monitor or feed to the 4K TV and revisit places that often we may have forgotten about, that revives and refreshes memories.

I also set Windows to go through random folders and have backgrounds that change every minute and on this notebook it's currently wandering through Kaohsiung in Taiwan.



At one stage I was keen about making photobooks and did make a pair of books to cover our 2014 trip to Japan for the autumn colours, but it took me so much effort that I'm loathe again to start on doing another trip. Laziness and old age are both increasing and it's simply too easy to open a HDD folder and browse.

I disagree, for me. I just read a post called “shutter therapy”. For me, it’s kind of like that. I take pictures because I enjoy it. I share on FB, rarely print but make my husband a calendar for Christmas yearly. When we go to concerts, I take pictures.

I’m just happy with a camera for the memories.

An old Scots word from my childhood but I cannot think of a better descriptive word for it.

An old Scots word from my childhood but I cannot think of a better descriptive word for it.

It reminds me of the Goon Shows on radio of the 1950's where their blethering was usually a chorus of "rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb" which reportedly was the word used by crowd scenes in movies so the collective sound was probably more convincing than to have everyone trying to make real conversation.

Well, in this forum no one really cares what your photographs portray, it's your friends and family's job to oooh and aaah at your kids smirks, dog running or birds you caught. For them a good photo is one that includes their favorite subject, captured in the most embarrassing, timely or lucky way; here we only care if it's sharp and as detailed as a FF image taken with a camera 3x more expensive that we secretly wish we had ;-)
