Buy a 100-400 or use an extender with 70-200 f2.8IS?

I have a 7D MkII, currently using a Canon 70-200 f2.8 ISM II and a Sigma 150-600 f5.6 mainly for wildlife shooting. I have a EF 24-105 f4 for shorter stuff too.

Next trip is to the Arctic and I'm not totally happy with the Sigma as it is a bit soft at full reach.

Should I stump up the bucks for a Canon 100-400 II and ditch the Sigma, or get an extender for the 70-200 and deal with the hassle of swapping it in and out? (I also have a 70D as a backup which I carry as well just in case)

I am shooting for myself so not selling them, but I would like to display the good shots on canvas or large format so the quality needs to be there.

If an extender is the choice, should it be a 1.4 or 2.0?

Yes, I would recommend that you should go for a Canon 100-400 II and ditch the Sigma. The 70-200 with a 2x converter does not provide the sharpness and contrast of the Canon 100-400 II.

I agree with ffabrici, go with a Canon 100-400 L II. If you buy a converter, get Canon's EF 1.4 III. You will need to manual focus with the 100-400 L II but that won't be difficult in bright Arctic lighting.

Wow - that place Arctic is on my bucket list...

My advise is get the Canon 100-400 II and bring your Iphone or what ever you need for back up to upload to a gallery.... IMHO

Yes - both are well. IMHO.

It's probably good to a point; I am told at full reach it falls over.

I've found it can be a bit soft when compared to a good piece of equipment, but fine for the amateur that is me. I was looking for pictures from Antarctica for this reply and I'm quite happy with the shots taken with the Sigma, so maybe I just keep what I have.

Yes - both are well. IMHO.

The 7DII won’t focus the 100-400mm II with the 2x - Manual Focus only

With the 1,4x the 7DII AutoFocus will be limited to the centre point plus the surrounding four AF points.

The Canon EF 100-400 II is a great lens. I use it frequently on my 7DII

Have you made adjustments using a docking station for your Sigma and have you made adjustments using your camera.
