Over the last few years I've collected pics of bees aloft.

I think you have captured some great images and composition looks good.

I think it is a good idea to zoom in on the image as you process it to see how changes effect the image. These look like something has been overdone and caused artifacts in the image that give it a strange look.

That bare flash is robbing you of a lot of color, contrast, and detail. The harsh specular highlights make an image look "artificially sharp" and difficult to sharpen in post without making the shot look over sharpened.

It is due to the OP shooting either with a bare flash, or one that is not properly diffused (too small, not close enough to the subject, has a hot spot in it, etc.). Those shots are a prime example of why light quality is so important.

Harsh is the nature of naked flash. I think the next to last pic is ugly and would delete it if I could.

Oh I don't know Alan. With a bit of TLC it doesn't look too bad to me.

Overall I think it is a super set of images. Very enjoyable to look at. Some of them do look a bit "sparkly" especially when looked at closely. I'm sure bare flash is having an effect as John has mentioned, but I'm wondering if there could be a processing side to this too, and/or camera settings if you are shooting JPEG.
