Jusr curious if anyone orddered from HENRYS Camera Store in Canada and recieved their stuff whatever that may be in nothing but plastic wrap?

I want to ordered a new camera from their but refuse to accept a package from a company who cuts back on packaging out of all things. Even amazon at minimum ships in bubble wrap envelope.

they sent a 2500 lens . no box, no bubble wrap, just a thin piece of plastic covering the retail box.

i wanna order something but not if this is still their practice.

Well, I do believe those boxes are designed to protect the lens adequately during shipping. And who knows, if it's dropped, maybe it's better protected than the "second impact" from the box hitting the inside of another box. Still, slapping a label on a box seems pretty inelegant.

I've bought gear from Henry's but not online. Phone and ask. If you're worried then don't order from them. It's not like Henry's the only place you can order from.

One of the few reputable dealers in Canada. But then if this story is true then they're not exactly worth of the title.

Come to think of it, I bought a used AF-S 105mm Micro from them and it was said to be in good condition. When it arrived the focus ring was almost seized and it was covered in dents. I gave them hell and they sent me a different one, but the one they sent was the af-d version. I stopped ordering from them after that...

I have only good things to say about Henry's with the exception over time some of there services are no longer offered. . I have great service from them, beyond what i would expect in most cases. However I deal with them at the retail level.

One of the few left that still operate brick-and-mortar stores. Which is increasingly difficult against the Amazons of this world. People show up at the stores, look-up what they want, try it out, talk to the staff, then turn around and order online from Amazon or other.

I've had issues with ordering online with just about any seller I've traded with, Canada or US, including Amazon, except for a single well-known one from NYC that's become my go to place for (almost) no hassle shopping.

I try to shop in store when I can as well. The current lockdown in Ontario is limiting that at the moment. I just purchased a used Sony 20mm f/1.8 G via their online store. It came heavily bubble wrapped and in like new condition. This lens wasn't in a retail box and I don't expect that with used items. The last online item I ordered was a used FE 85mm f/1.8 and it was in the box still wrapped in plastic. I'd swear it was actually brand new. I feel I've been well treated by this retailer both in store and online.

Seems like every place I order from has had a decline in packing.

Amazon seems to be very stingy with packing and padding these days. I've received several items, including a hard drive, where the retail packaging was just dropped in a box with ZERO padding.

Last year B&H sent me a Dell monitor in the retail box with just a label slapped on the side -- not even plastic wrap. It arrived defective, whether from shipping or a factory defect I cannot say, but the replacement was properly packed in a solid shipping box.

Seems to me that shipping cameras or electronics in retail packaging just creates more temptation to those who might be tempted and helps those who plan to steal target the good stuff. Plus on camera gear I save the packaging for when I resell -- it seems to add a little value and help stuff sell faster.

I'm sure part of it is just the volume of business. These days there must be a lot of people like me who order online rather than breathe the air in the local Walmart. But Amazon is making tons of money -- seems like they could afford to hire and train enough quality people to handle the work.

FWIW, I have been very pleased with Henry's in the past, though it has been 3 or 4 years since I ordered from them. Even though I'm in Texas I have bought several cameras and lenses from them when items were out of stock in the US or they had a better price.

Absolutely agree. I bought a mid-level ALTA tripod this Christmas from the store in Kanata, Ontario and they agreed to match the Amazon price without a quibble.

The salesperson was knowledgeable and very helpful.

Got another one from Amazon today -- a tripod and some lawn care items just chucked in a big box with no padding. Everything arrived fine, but still annoying.

They get knocked for over-packaging or they get knocked for not using enough. Either way, people are buying and Mr. Bezos is smiling all the way to the bank . ;-)

Something I had ordered from Amazon, and marked "gift" at checkout was sent without even a plastic wrapping. The shipping label was stuck straight onto the retail box and shipped out.

True enough, and I thought about that as I was writing. This last shipment the box was so large there would have been more packing than goods. And I'm sure the packing is done by people scrambling to meet a quota and not being paid overly much -- they probably don't have a lot of time to think thing through.

And you're totally right about Bezos smiling.

I recently received a light stand in a large box with just a small piece of packing paper crumpled inside, could have fit five or six more in that box. Same week I arrived home to find a studio strobe by my front door, no packaging just a shipping sticker on the product box! Luckily I live in a nice neighborhood and there were no damages. Two different companies, the way it is now I guess.

who do u deal with now
My most recent purchase was on Amazon through a 3rd party Carmens Photo that has a brick and mortar store in Stratford. I also deal with a mom and pop store in Waterloo, BJ Photo. I have rented gear from Vistek in Mississauga as well. The customer service has been great with all of these companies. I have also purchased gear from B&H online. I've never had any kind of issue with B&H. My personal rule is never buy anything cross boarder if there is a high potential for a return. I have never returned anything cross boarder and I'd prefer not to since I've heard it can be a royal pain.

Truth be told, I'm still blown away with the treatment I got at Henry's. I had been a loyal customer for years. Loyal to one sales person and he's the one that screwed everything up. Lies and greed. This happened in the Waterloo store which has been moved to Kitchener. This was actually a few years ago and I'm still bothered by it, to the point that I can't even think about walking in there, even just to check stuff out and buy elsewhere.
