The guys that developed custom ROMs for the 808 back in the day have surprisingly released a new version of their 808 ROM which fixes (and or removed) all the broken Nokia stuff on the phone, so now everything works, except there is no WhatsApp :)

So I flashed the new ROM and took the phone with on a 4 day getaway, it still produces the goods I tell ya, lovely natural looking photos.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing!

Can you maybe use whatsapp web on it?

Do you mean the Delight guys have a new version out? Link?

I tried searching. Original Delight is still at v1.5.

Good to know. I still have not flashed my 808!!

Never buy version 1.0 of anything.

"Look at that subtle color saturation. The tasteful noise reduction. Oh my god. It even has actual deep of field."

You can get nice (narrow) depth of field even with tiny sensors like on my LG V30 (it's a tiny 1/3" sensor).
You just need to get a bit closer to your subject :)
For example (sorry, can't upload files from my workplace you'll have to do with a link):

You missed the reference.

Still, this makes me sad.
Not too long ago I missed a opportunity to get one.

thanks for the kind comments, there is actually a place in South Africa that still has a few original 808's (brand new, sealed) available, I'm considering buying a 2nd one... :)

Nice shots. I remember that other firmware. I think it was called Belle Delight. It's great because it allows 100% jpegs in stead of I think default 90, which still rocks as is. Also the customizing color and sharpness pre-shot is awesome. For fear of never seeing the firmware again I stuck it in the cloud somewhere recently.

yes this is the latest iteration of Belle Delight, now version 1.7, and yes it has the option to choose 100% for jpegs,

Now you can download a new improved version of it!

So out of curiosity I decided to do a quick comparison with my Note 9, which has a great camera, and bare in mind these are 100% crops (both were at 12mp resolution for the original shots), its indoors, so the 808 has a bit more noise, but the 808 crop just looks more natural and the color is more accurate.

Whereas the Note 9 has a slight water painting look, much better than Samsung 2 years ago, and moving in the right direction (less processed), but the difference is quite obvious.

yeah that's what I love mostly about the 808, a natural appearance.

The 808 and Symbian phones generally speaking have issues with Windows 10 which is that no USB driver exists for Win 10. I am still on Windows 7. It has been some time already. You can look up the solution in Microsoft's Discussion Forums.

Here is a post from August 2015:

An earlier solution was to install Huawei Mobile Connect for Windows 10 for the 808 to work with USB in Win 10.

I tried to look in Huawei's support site but could not find the required file.

At least you can always remove the SD card to transfer files, right?

if you install nokia suite and the mobile Huawei drivers you'll be fine on Windows 10, thats what I did, and all was fine.

Or just plug it into laptop and copy the photos, thats what I do on my Windows 10 laptop and Windows Surface Tablet.

Thanks but where do I find the Huawei drivers? I had difficulty navigating Huawei's website for downloads.

the 808, just like the CM1, has great built-in photographer-centric apps in the sense that they let owners change the camera defaults to suit their overall tastes in color saturation, contrast, etc. One 808 owner may, for example, use higher level adjustments and produce, with no post-editing, strikingly vivid pictures that are similar to what one typically expects from other mobile phones.

but let's not kid ourselves that other phone cameras like Pixels can't produce similar subjectively "closer to reality" images like those from the 808 and CM1, it's just that the default camera app in those devices simply doesn't have an easy universal configuration to do so. one has to do it by other means via the specific app's post adjustments in JPEG, or by enabling the save RAW function and manipulating those files to one's content.
