Ok, this camera generates a lot of talk and controversy already. I am curious if the voices of disappointment are really as many as I see or am I just a victim of confirmation bias.

I think a poll is in order to solve this mystery.

The big problem that I see is that you don’t see most people going WOW. You have a lot of meh, you have a lot of negatives. For me the problem is Olympus has already dumbed down one line (E-M10 line), I do not want them to follow suit with the Pen-F series. I want thatbline to continue and I want it to raise the bar in all areas. The last thing I’d want for the Pen-F2 to remove a dozen features add the 12-50 as the “kit lens” and call it an upgrade.

I wanted the GX9 to simply destroy it’s predecessor in almost all areas - so much so that I would get tired of hearing people say “Here Panasonic, shut up and take my money!!” I wanted this so that Olympus would then have to make sure they up their game.

I picked up an end-of-life GX1 as a compact supplement/backup camera for my GH3. I will likely do the same with the GX9 to match my GH5, including waiting for the price to drop below $500.

If the camera was named GX95 I would think it was a great camera for this market level. Still not a camera I would consider. I was hoping a camera named GX9 would be a upgrade to the GX8 and a pro-level camera since it has single digit name. Then I would be really interested in the camera. The way it is I am disappointed.

If they had called it the GX95 then all would be well. But the naming convention boggles the mind. If there is ever going to be a true GX8 successor what the heck would they call that?

Yep, exactly my thoughts.

The naming anomaly was the GX8, which was not a successor for the GX7. But I agree with you : will there be a GX8 successor ?

This GX9(5) looks like overall like a nice improvement over the GX85. I'm very happy to see Panasonic focus on this style of camera rather than releasing another oversized beast. However I'm a bit disappointed by the shape of the grip. For me Panasonic was the best grip designer on the market. Even with small grips, you got a secure feeling, for example on the GF3. But here, the grip looks very uncomfortable, and even the add-on grip doesn't look right...

What’s the purpose of a 16:9 viewfinder? Seems counterintuitive to shooting in 4:3 or even 3:2

trouble with the poll is that you don't have to want one to think that Panasonic have got it dead right. It has absolutely no appeal to me yet I think that despite the moaners it meets a market much missed on this forum since the GX7.

Not very good poll options, so I won't vote. DLBlack's comment hit the nail on the head. GX9 is a great GX95 (which all those who want that camera can rightfully celebrate - Way to go, Panasonic!), but it ain't a successor to the GX8. The fact that they're calling it the GX9 suggests that there will never be a true successor to the GX8, i.e., an actual upgrade in all respects from the GX8, and that is disappointing (You suck, Panasonic!). :-)

If you think that then you are in the "positive leaning reaction" :-)

I for one think that Panasonic got it dead wrong :-)

And the only thing they had to do to get it dead right was to name this camera GX95 or something like that :-)

The problem with this new release is that it is mostly seen as an announcement of the end of the GX8 line of cameras. Well, not much of a line, it was only one model. The problem was that a lot of people here expected it to be a line that continues. Panasonic killed this expectation.

It was the only rangefinder type MFT camera that had aspirations to be a flagship. That's gone now.

They, like Olympus, decided that rangefinder style bodies are for non-serious uses and their place is at the bottom half of the hierarchy. And that's a shame because I wanted a backup body to my E-M1 II to be a rangefinder style.

Maybe it's time to get a second hand GX8 on the cheap. I was kinda hoping GX9 would be just a fixed and slightly tweaked GX8.

To sum it up, GX9 is a nice camera. It's just that it's not a GX9 :-)

My sentiments exactly.
But then they also had to price it like a Gx95.

100-200 bucks less seems required with that old unpopular cheap field sequential evf.

It is not a camera I would be interested in but the only problem it seems is the name.(and the fact that it signals the end of the GX8 line)

Taken as a camera, without getting caught up in nomenclature, it is a good release.

Thing is, we have the GH5, GH5s, G9.

How many Panasonic 'flagships' can the market take?

Yes, precisely.

And it makes me wonder what a GX90/ 95 might look like, whenever it’s released? Just a sensor update to 20Mp, no other changes? Or, the end of the line for GX80/ 85?

On the brighter side, Panasonic are soon running out of numbers in much of their current model naming sequences, except for the GH series, so either they climb aboard the “Mark I, Mark II, Mark...” train, or completely revamp their lines and naming conventions.

Me, too. Latest sensor, shutter, &c in the rf-style of body.

Another bright spot I just thought about — if my GM5 ever dies and cannot be repaired, I’l just replace it with the somewhat larger GX85. I have enough cameras right now anyway.

Yep. It is a very nice GX85.

20MP from now on is good news.

Panasonic should release an statement with their camera names standards.

Naming it GX9 means one digit cameras are not high end anymore.

I'm a bit disappointed.

I was hoping that the GX9 would be better than the GX7 in every way, not have some features that are the same or worse (EVF, grip, flash sync). Of course that's offset by the welcome improvements it offers over its 5 year old predecessor.

My GX7 is getting pretty old and has taken a bit of damage - sooner or later it'll need to be replaced. I think the GX9 will be a replacement I can live with, even if it isn't what I hoped for.

Apart from GX8 they never were.
