New updated D850 specs

I'm curious how the Dynamic Range will be; I hope it's not less than the D810 in their attempt to increase the ISO range of the 850.

... If they have sacrificed the quality of the image for all the other specs, then the camera is a dud.

... Fortunately, the FF forums will be rigorous and demanding in their evaluation, so the truth will come out.

I have been trying to keep up with this, but do we have any answers on video focus?

4k full sensor readout is great, but focus is my complaint.

I have to use f5.6 to confidently nail focus even on minimal focal place movement subjects.

It says the same focus system as D5 and D500.... So.... Same Nikon video focus rubbish as always?

Sigh. I would have to have a holiday in Europe instead this year. Sigh...

.. about making custom banks useable?
To me - and my use, they certainly are useable - and far more usable than "User Exposure Settings" as the U1 and U2 on my D7000.

Being able to select different exposure modes in any of the User Banks combinations is one of the "pro" lay-out features being deal-breaking to me.

The settings are not "sticky", rendering them less useable.
I´m neither the first nor the last to be highy disappointed with Nikon´s custom banks, but if you´re happy - good for you.
Yes, an option to make them sticky would be awesome. The way they are set up now is really useful in some situations, frustratingly useless in others. Nikon could make both camps happy with some very simple code.
Surely.

I have the Panasonic G80 (as a lightweight compliment to the D810) and Pana´s made it just right. Of course Nikon could do it too.
Yes the Panasonic C1, C2 and C3 custom memories are well implemented

As far as I can see, they are similarity to the Nikon U1 and U2. You have to preselect an exposure mode.

The Nikon banks system gives you, if used optimal, 16 different User Settings - and for all 16, you can change the exposure mode, without changing the settings.

I'm not using 16 different settings - 4 or 5, though I'm changing very much between "M" and "A" for the same kind of shootings. Can't be done with the U1 and U2 design - they are locked to an exposure mode.

Sticky?

I don't know, if I want them to be.

With my setup, my Standard A and Standard B is easily changed with any changing I do - which is my intention with those two Banks settings - my special banks will be changed only if I find a very good reason. Because they are not locked to exposure mode settings, they actually never will be changed.

If I want the settings "sticky" - the D800 is able to save and store settings on/from the card. Not the best implementation, but it's there - could wish the function to be more selectable - and maybe stored to a in-camera memory??.

We have totally different takes on what constitutes good custom banks implementation, and that won´t change by arguing about it.

The solution is for Nikon to offer user selectable use of the banks, I don´t see why anyone would oppose that.
Whether you´d like them unsticky would then be a moot point.

I very much doubt the 4k full FX. That translates to them having a very good sensor to processor readout and a powerful new processor. And this also means they have found a way to dissipate the heat.

I'd say, aps-c or even m4/3 size 4k. 35FF 4k video is a big thing.

No it simply means they are sub-sampling and reading only 8MP (4k resolution) from the sensor in full frame mode. The fact that the camera is reported to shoot 30fps at 8MP in electronic shutter mode suggest this the case. The processor only has to be able to handle 4k video which it already does in the d500 etc. It is the same way how 1080p mode is implemented in the 810 ie. subsampling the sensor at 2MP (1080p res.)

If it was doing full sensor readout for video then it would be able to shoot at a higher resolution in mirror up mode.

Honestly I'm in-between on this, DxO only rating base ISO DR seems to have skewed opinion that this is all that matters.

These specs are pretty high. It looks like Nikon really want to celebrate their 100th year in style.

Compare all this advancement to the sterile 6D2 release.

Oh I love that. Talk about massaging our egos .. ;)

If you want a curious read, dip into one of the threads about the new 6D Mark II having a dynamic range of 2.5+ stops worse than the state of the art. Essays in denial on why it is a slight disappointment but doesn't really matter too much. You know, almost as if the quality of the photos doesn't matter, what matters is the thickness of the feature set and the manual, and most of all, having the right big white letters on the pentaprism.
