News: The M5 is going to be a WONDERFUL CAMERA

You are right about the touch screen of Sony and judging by my G7X, Canon UI in M5 should be great. Another positive for the M5 is its size which is quite small:

However, I still believe that its price is quite high based on its features.

Heh, heh, you are spot on. Marco Nero will make amazing images with it, assuming his wife lets him buy one.

Actually, that's not true. Change that to "Assuming that he has a place to hide his new gear from his wife..." ;)

I think you got your wish (in spades) regarding the smaller AF box. :-D

I am also with 70d. Thought about upgrading to 80d but price is too stubborn. Looks like M5 is the way to go for my occasional family use. With 22mm lens, I might end up carrying it and using it a lot.
I'm with you on this. That 22mm would be a perfect fit for me (small groups, environmental portraits). I've had the Canon 24mm f/1.4L in my basket a couple of times (for DSLR) but have never pulled the trigger. Always been a more pressing need.

Couple this little 22 STM with the M5's DPAF and tilting touchscreen, and you have one beautiful Candid-shooting machine. Dang, I'm practically salivating. :-D

Thanks for sharing the comparison shot Yannis. I didn't realize that the new M5 is smaller (and lighter) than the Pannys. Interesting.

Yannis said, "However, for me the worst thing about Canon, is that they deliberately cripple their cameras in order to hold on the DSLR market as much as possible..."

FWIW, Nikon does the same thing and they didn't even make it into your list of top 3 manufacturers. Canon and Nikon have long held the top spots, but Nikon has, IMO, been much slower to adapt to changing tastes in camera equipment. I own Nikon and Panasonic equipment, but find the M5 to be very attractive. The Panasonic G series has some nice offerings, but if I'm going to buy into another new system, I prefer a larger sensor than m4/3.

Never go away, OK? What a perfect post.

Now I know I'm getting an M5.

Thank you for the link. Ok so is clean HDMI pushing it ? Otherwise this camera would nicely match my 6D and my Canon lenses.

Given my A6300 has terrible jello effect while shooting handheld in 4K and 1080p is just average I would be glad to switch back to Canon M series.

My biggest complaint with the original M was that I couldn't see the LCD in sunny Panama and the focus box was too large missing focus on my subjects. I didn't mind the extra flash I had to carry with me because the 22mm lens was just perfect.

So clean HDMI would seal the deal for me.

Hi,

I am not a brand loyalist and have cameras from all three major manufacturers (Panasonic, Olympus and Canon), however I feel that Canon doesn't really want to win in the mirrorless market, be the no1.

The M5 is much better than the M3 and will definitely help you get great pictures (as most cameras today) but compared to the other mirrorless, it just lacks behind in features while being more expensive!!

vs 6300: it lacks the 4K, the weather proof, the lens range (!!) and may be slower in AF

vs m43: depending on which brand you compare it, the only part that M5 is better is the larger sensor! Otherwise, it lacks the 4K photo mode, wp, lens range by a great margin, focus stacking, live composite, panorama.

Do you really believe that this new sensor is that revolutionary that you don't need other features? Personally no, especially at that price level. Unless someone is really a Canon loyalist or has a lot of EF lenses to use, I can't see many reasons to prefer the Canon mirrorless vs the other brands.

However, for me the worst thing about Canon, is that they deliberately cripple their cameras in order to hold on the DSLR market as much as possible...

Well I for one have the A6300 as my travel camera. Bought the 20mm Pancake and to me the image was terrible along with too much distortion. Sold that lens and got the kit pancake which was used and stopped working so now I got the other kit lens the 18-55. The lens is ok and the images are perfect coming from a kit lens but for me this camera has other issues for my intent. I'm not about to pay 1100$ Canadian dollars for a 16-70mm travel lens when the images are just better than OK. My old stellar Panasonic 12-35 F2.8 which cost me less was sharp edge to edge.

One , the battery is terrible , not sure how the M5 will do but my old Panasonic Gx8 battery lasted much longer compared to the A6300 even though on paper the A6300 can take more shots so please don't point me to specs.

The menu system is just terrible.

My camera over heats even after the firmware even when using the faster Extreme Pro Sandisk cards. Over heated during my daughters birthday and missed some videos. The videos where 4 minutes followed by 6 minutes and then 8 minutes and the next video just stopped recording while on tripod. So please don't tell me I should have known because the manual says after 20 plus minutes it will warm up.

The screen is tiny because its not displaying the full image on the back of the LCD but does in the EVF. What a waste of LCD restate.

My old M and my Panasonic when using spot metering the metering was actually aligned with the active focused point where the A6300 cant do that. Spot meter is right in the center . Why ?? this is mirrorless and not a DSLR.

Anytime i shoot 4k Video handheld the video just jumps and creates this weird jello effect as if the world around you was on acid for some drug. Very strange. Never noticed that with my Panasonic but I understand the sensor is smaller.

So 4k Video is out unless completely still or on tripod. May work for others but as a travel camera chances are i'm video my family walking around or just sightseeing. Static shots of the beach are great except I left the camera under the beach towel and overheated just by the power of the sun and would not take a video.

For me yes the M5 technically should work better compared to the A6300.

Now there are many things I do like about the A6300 such as the small compact size. Excellent sensor. The EYE focus is amazing when using a native Sony lens.

The mic pre amps are very clean compared to my Canon gear. It has a working flash.

Clean HDMI and I could use 4:2:2 for green screen when using external recorder. My kids shoot green screen and even with 4k down sampled to 1080p the keying is much easier compared to my T3i.

The focusing is super fast even with the MC11 adaptor and my Canon lenses. The EVF is nice although not as nice as the Gx8 which to me compared to an OVF of a full frame camera.

So as usual I will pop by Henys and test drive the EOSM5 with the new kit lens.

Will wait for more reviews as I have another 6 months to trade in my A6300 and my Sigma MC11 to get half back from the store I bought it from.

Lets see - I encourage others to post their hand on and travel experience with the M5 based on their perspective as we all have different wants and needs.

Thanks for reading.

Have to mostly agree and will likely be purchasing one.

Really would have liked: 1) articulating touchscreen LCD like the 80D; and-I guess that is about it.

Whatever I have seen, 80d video is pretty good. Can it match it. 80d kinda took a Internet anguish for lack of 4k. But nice 1080p is what i need.

I am looking forward to it also but I sold all my lenses, body and adapter I had for my M2 :-x:-x:-( because I couldn't deal with no viewfinder. I have an SL1 and found measurements for both and was surprised how close in size and weight the M5 is to the SL1. I will sell the SL1 when the M5 comes out. Can't wait!

Both are measured body only.

I have an SL1 also, but you can't get much out of them, so I decided to just keep it for a backup. Like you said, about the same size and weight. of course, I had better see a faster focus on the M5!! 8)

Hopefully it focuses as fast as they say and the fps sounds great. I was using the camera size compare site and it's a lot thinner than you can tell with the measurements posted in the specs. Best of all, finally a viewfinder!

Yes it is and it's already causing a stir among Sony A6000/6300 users .

I am all for Sony mirrorless but I am intrigued with this EOS M5. I think Canon has done a good job and predict this camera is going to be way better than many think.

The dual pixel AF has the potential to be really good.

The touch screen and focus point selection like an iPhone is also a huge day to day plus.

Not sure about the native lenses perhaps others who know them can comment.

4K video on the A6300 is somewhat buggy anyway with heat issues.

Whether the sensor can match the Sony one though is another story. If they come close then it would be good.

Colours could be a plus for the Canon.

Also it should work nicely with EF lenses so it may stop some of the Canon owner desertions for the Sony mirrorless sensors and features.

Tracking is one area some mirrorless are not good at but 5D4 reviews state how amazing dual pixel AF is for tracking. If that is true for the M5 that would be a huge plus.

Greg.

A major step forward for Canon. Hopefully this is Canon's statement that a FF EF-mount mirrorless is in the near future. I expect it also is Canon's slow conservative way of getting into mirrorless. They must know that mirrorless is the future but are carefully getting into it.
