Great shots. I'm slightly puzzled by the zebra finch, as it's not native to your parts and I hadn't heard of it establishing there after accidental introduction. Is it a wild bird or are you near an aviary? (I assume these were taken in Pretoria.)

Incredibly good! The detail, colors and clarity are all fantastic!

Have you tried the 560?

PS: is the aperture shown compensated for the TC? I mean is f/9 really f/9, so f/6.3 at the lens diaphragm, or is it f/9 minus a stop for the TC = f/13? Thanks and sorry for the silly question.

These are super photos!

I wonder what they would be like had you not used the TC, then cropped more to achieve a similar result?

Note: I'm not asking about "equivalence", "DOF", etc. I'm specifically concerned with what the image quality of each bird would be like had you gone a different route to these photos.

I have that camera, lens and TC. Last year I briefly used the TC with that lens on a K-3, with sharp results. But I didn't compare it with not using the TC.

With the K-1, I'm taking a much more relaxed attitude to not framing tightly, then throwing away lots of pixels. For my purposes, the K-1 has plenty of really good pixels, and having thrown most of them away I can still have a good photo technically.

For example, I posted some photos of airplanes in flight, along with details about the cropping I did before downsizing and posting them. 3 of the photos, shot at 450mm, were cropped to 8MP or 9MP, yet still retained lots of detail. They can be found from here:

Extra details for the "airplane in flight" photos

(These have been processed only in Lightroom, not Photoship, then downsized after cropping. The pre-downsized cropped photos have more detail).

On a gimbal head, I might consider using the TC. But when hand-holding, I'm finding that particular lens is easier to use without the TC.

What wonderful details. Loved them! The light appears a bit harsh(?)

Dear Philip, I have a lot of patience.

If I am not moved to Nikon , I have some patience . ;-)

I am deflated a little, when I learned that Sigma lenses have problems with K-1.

I have Sigma 150-500mm and Sigma 70-200mm f2,8 macro II EX , both FF.
Well you could fit them on the HD converter as its only SIgma made the metal mount too big.!

oh wait....

no you can't as Sigma also miss back-engineered the PKaii protocol and they wont AF on the HD converter

Caveat emptor
Very strong strike for me.
Well if you go Nikon or Canon your existing Sigmas wont fit and many older Sigmas like yours will require FW updates to work correctly on newer bodies.

Thats if there still a 'supported' product by Sigma

So if you have a major issues with Sigmas fitting OEM cameras then maybe you need a Sigma body ?

Sound familiar

AT least with Pentax it only physical design and APS-c/FF detection the lens actually still work (as much as they ever did)

Dear Awaldram , I have Tamron-F 1.4X Pz-AF MC4, and work good with Pentax K-3 II, but with K-1 I dont know if work.

Thanks for hints and tips.

Hi Barry

This is just testing to get used to especially the DOF. However I always try to frame as tight as possible. For me that is the challenge of bird photography getting as close as possible. The more MP's you can get into the frame the more detail I believe. :-)

Thanks Umesh
