FYI, I'm no pentax sales person, but I have started seeing more and more photos and the K1 images look a lot like what i was getting from the S5 Pro. The colors have pastels in them too. Skin tones have that S5 Pro look as well.

If you are one of the people that keep dreaming of having an "updated" S5 Pro but with more resolution, you might want to check out the K1. Is probably the closest thing out there that has S5 pro like images, in a DSLR body. Is actually pretty impressive.

Is it ilegal to talk about the S5 pro and compare it to another camera brand? I hope Is not against the rules.

Looks like a fine camera and feature rich - 5 axis IBIS, pixel shift, weather resistant, astro tracer. Not so many up to date Pentax FF lenses, especially primes. I wouldn't go back to DSLR because I don't want to face calibrating each lens to the body - especially zooms. Also not a light system for travel.

Well, this is just a FYI for folks that love their S5 Pro and wouldn't mind a DSLR. That's all. Is always good to look and find interesting alternatives out there. There are so many different people out there/here that have different likes and taste.

In fact that's how I left my nikon gear, because someone there posted and compared their nikon photos compared to the S5 Pro and voila! That's when I got hooked with the S5 Pro, which at the time I didn't even know it existed. Good info is always good. No harm done there

Thanks for your post, looks like a very promising camera. The problem is that you'll need to purchase a slew of new lenses as well, unless there are adapters that will allow you to mate your Nikon lenses to it.

Calibration is a mixed bag. Many DSLRs do not provide it as an option. The new D500 and D5 do it automatically and it is no big deal anymore.

Depends on how you define replacPSement. The K-1 is full frame. The S5 Pro was APS. The K-1 was mostly made by Nikon presumably because Fuji did not yet have the skill set to do that. It does now. The S5 Pro replacement is here. It is the X-T1. An APS camera with a more modern viewing system and the Fuji imprint on color.

I am pretty 'well-equipped' now but do have several Fuji X cameras. I therefore know just how good the brand is and especially in the area of image quality and colour. Re an S5 replacement I believe that the brand awareness and loyalty built up over recent years would justify a move back into the 'full-size' slr arena but at full-frame level at the equivalent image quality of a decent medium format camera (as is the D810) and minimum 36mp (with in-camera resolution options available as in D810). Lenses could continue to be Nikon F.

Fuji has made cameras with sensors that produce 'special' OOC images. That's why I'm keeping my X-100 and XE-1. I'll get the X-Pro 2 in a year or so though. ;-)

From all the time I shot with the S5 Pro and now the XE1, the jpeg color output from the S5 is way superior to my XE1 in any light, except darkness. So no, they are still not as special as the S5.

But I understand what you are trying to say. That X100 I always hear so much of and the type of color output I have seen from it tells me that camera is also different from my Xe1, after all it does have a 12mp sensor. Those 12 MP sensors produced some awesome color back then. One day I will buy the X100, I just haven't had the opportunity to get one.

Now that we're talking about it, you just gave me the idea of trading my 18-55 for a X100. You are a great buddy!

Yes, seems like an awesome camera. If you check out the Pentax forum you will see lots of real world examples, several threads a clear indication that the K1 is a big hit and its not some disingenuous reviewer saying so.

Oddly enough, I never shot my S2 or S3 in jpeg mode, on RAW. I found the AWB absolutely terrible, it always had a greenish cast. As well, I never found the workflow particularly difficult or time consuming, so I could never find a reason to shoot jpeg.

Have you ever shot your XE-1 in RAW mode, and if so, how would you compare RAW files from that camera to those from the S5?

Yes I shoot raw with my XE1 and the raws from both cameras are outstanding. The highlight recovery power of the S5 is unbeatable, but then the newer sensor does things better when pulling shadows. The S5 produces more film looking images in both jpeg and raw. The XE1 in jpeg the images come out too digital fake smooth looking depending on the type of light around.

Again, the raws from the S5 are outstanding, but different. The raws from the XE1 are also outstanding, and different too.

To me the only problem with the S5 was it's low resolution and that super strong AA filter. Everything else about it was perfect. For wedding photography you could never blow up highlights and not be able to fix it easily and that silky look of the bride's dress is so beautifully smooth and detailed.

For the very first time I am going to be shooting a wedding next week with Xtrans gear, so we will see what the results are. I know I'm going to have to be extremely careful not to overexpose that dress otherwise I'm screwed. No matter how much you try to correct clipped highlights they just don't look nice at all. For the S5 that issue is a piece of cake and nothing to worry about.

Regarding the S3, I shot with it for only a few days because it was too darn slow when shooting raw, so I sold it, but from what others say the S3 had one of the best WB, so I can't say much there.

Thanks so much for replying to my post.

I never had an opportunity to shoot with the S5, and would still love to buy one. For how I intend to use it I won't suffer any. I found the dynamic range of the S3 to be far superior to that of the S2, and the files were so damn malleable. And yes it was super slow, but most of my work didn't require anything faster so I was OK with it.

From what I've read on this forum, there isn't any tangible difference between RAW files taken with the XE-1 and XE-2 cameras, they have the same sensor it would seem. I do hope to pick up and "X" cam soon, and it will be interesting to see how it compares to the "S" cams.

Oh, please take a note that from what i understand, fuji doesn't have any more parts for S5 repairs. Not sure if any camera repair place would be able to help you if the camera you buy goes or is bad. The particular camera i bought was back focusing with some zoom lenses like the nikon 18-55 and 16-85. When i put the 17-55 on it the problem was completely gone and AF was very accurate.

The S5 LOOOOOOOVES high end primes, or high quality zooms like a 70-200 which could be very expensive, although there are very inexpensive but very excellent older used tamron 70-200 lenses. The S5 is very very picky about lenses, you can't just put a cheap lens on it so you will have to play around with that.

Because some of these factors mentioned above I decided to sell it before it went bad on me and decided to keep investing in high quality primes for my XE1 and just recently purchased XT1. The AA filter in the S5 is so strong that I'm not sure it would have been a good idea for me to continue buying more expensive lenses for it. is a really nice fun camera to use though, and extremely easy to use.

The S3/S5 jpg output was and still is brilliant, but my s5 sees like use now - basically due to the form factor. With an x100 I can't see myself ever going back to a dslr. I for one would love to see a revival of the SR sensor (12 Mpx x 12 Mpx would do) using the latest cmos technology for better high iso performance and in a x100-esque body. Great Portability and the DR would be ridiculous. I Guess we're all allowed to dream.....
