What is the killer Sony Full Frame lens?

I ordered the A7 RII and a metabones adapter for my Canon glass. (I was shooting a 5D, 5DII, 5DII) and I'm opening my wallet and closing it real soon. (too much going out vs. incoming income).

I have a bunch of lenses for the Sony Nex (5n, 6 and 7) but I was thinking about getting one lens that is native and supports FF.

I've heard some negative things about the 70-200 or was it the 24-70?

If I was to pick a single FF native lens, what is the best one that you would recommend with no reservations?

Is there one that is an absolute gem, that autofocuses as fast at the a7RII can handle?

(As far as preferences go, I use the Canon 24-70L and 70-200L the most, should I be concerned about the Sony being slower?)

Zony FE 55mm f1.8 ... but with the reservation to check IQ as Sony q/a has room for improvement.

+1 on the 55/1.8.

The 35/1.4 can be a great lens if you get a good copy, but I think it's got more quality control problems than the 55, and even at its best I don't think it gets as sharp as the 55. The 55 is also considerably smaller and lighter.

The "killer" Sony full frame lens is the FE 90 f2.8 macro.

It is noticeably sharper than any of my other lenses (see my gear list), and DXO rate it as the sharpest autofocus lens they've ever tested.

The next best for me (and a close 2nd to the FE 90mm) is the FE 55mm.

Yes even the 24-70 is good, size and weight, OSS, color and central sharpness is excellent. 70-200 excellent size and weight and build quality. Really sharp lens. 55mm the only lens I need to ever shoot with the A7 series. 35mm f2.8 is small, nicely made and sharp.

Its ridiculous and reminds me of Sigma about 12 years ago when you ordered a new lens from B+H you had a 1 in 3 chance of getting a good one.

What is so irritating about Sony is the cameras are so very top notch, but the way they run the FE lens side of the business is seemingly like an afterthought when it should be the other way around like Fuji.

Fuji primarily designed its camera system around the lens design and nailed it first go and not visa versa and why most all the Fuji lenses are top notch and sharp WO corner to corner even the 18-55mm kit lens which is one of the better zoom lenses I have ever used and cost $250 used. Sony needs that type of Fuji kit lens at a reasonable cost both for the crop cameras and the A7 series and not the junk kit lenses they have now.

You never read the "if you get a good one" comment about Fuji lenses so maybe Sony will take note and clean up the QC department.

That said yes there can be bad lenses from any manufacture and it just depends on their QC system which with Sony seems not to be so hot for a company that sells their top tier camera body for $3.2k so its ridiculous to have to return lenses until you get a good one.

You should have 100% confidence in getting a perfect 35mm F1.4 lens when you are paying $1.6 k for it and not have to worry if it is decentered.

And I hope they are listening...

IMHO there is a difference between Photographs, Images, Snapshots, and Pics.
The only FF E mount lenses I have are the 28-70 FE kit lens and the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8.

The kit lens is just a kit lens but probably the best kit lens I have used (and that is many).

The Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 is Canon L quality in every way.
Wait - isn't it Zeiss quality? (ha ha)
LOL

Yes it is. Just need to speak Canon sometimes to Canon users slumming it here or thinking of switching..

In fact, I consider the 55 1.8 to be high end L quality......better than my old 20-35 2.8 L (that is a brick now that doesn't work) and much better built than my old 100-300 5.6 L (which is L glass of its day in a consumer lens).

Better built too than the 135 f2 L (though I do love that lens since it is so versatile and usable on more cameras)......the 55 was cheaper than the 135 f2 L too.

The two wide manual focus Canon current TS-Es are as well built but are huge by comparison and much much more expensive.

I must say one Canon lenses I am very taken with (though again not a focal length I have found that usable before) and not an L lens but very cheap and very sharp is the 40 2.8 STM.

Slow AF and AFS only on my A7s/A7 but really nice and quite usable for small groups of people and fast AF and ok for a portrait lens with my M4/3 GX7.

Matched with a cheap adapter (like the Fotga), it makes a nice lens for an A7 series camera.

Sony 135mm F1.8 ZA

It is a ton of weight to carry around. But it the only lens that can convert a snapshot to a great shot. No skill is needed. Just point and shoot. ;-)

I like the 135 f/2 L - it's a splendid lens. What about CA wide open? I've contemplated adapting either that or the A mount 135 1.8.
Never had any problem on an A7s/A7 or GX7.

I chose it over the Zeiss 135 f2 APO and the Sony Zeiss 135 1.8.....and some other 135s and near 135s.

The APO is the best 135 and the Sony Zeiss the best AF 135 but the canon is not THAT far off either and was cheaper and more usable for me.

I got it for the A7s in particular but also used it (briefly) on a Canon 7D......and since getting a Kipon adapter and since the latest firmware with that adapter it does double duty for me as a decent tele lens on my GX7.

The Samyang 135 f2 seems very good too but again is MF only and I don't like the look wide open from it as much as the Canon (though it may be a bit sharper).

I use it for AF mostly on the A7s for live music individual shots.....for faster moving bands I will use it manual focus but most of the time AF works fine for me with it.

On the GX7 AF, while still only AFS, is very fast.

I sold the 7D as I was not using it as much as I thought I would.

I also got a Sigma 150 2.8 in EF mount but that plays up on the A7 cameras except on one adapter and for MF only......it now works ok on the GX7.

I do have an old 135 1.8 screwmount Promura......now THAT can have some issues wide open!

It really depends on what you want. Smallest package? The 35mm f2.8 is the killer. Macro and some portrait? The 90mm macro lens. One of the very best normal lens for any dSLR? The 55mm f1.8. Especially if you have a phase detection AF A7*, so your AF is fast. Oh, yes, and there is the 35mm f1.4 if you want actual, physical, declick-able aperture ring.

The 24-70 is a polarizing lens: some hate it with passion, others love and use it. It is, however, good choice for video, as it has OSS, just like the 28-70 kit lens.

The 70-200 is not really talked about in these forums, most likely it is "good enough" for an f4, and uninteresting. The only really damning thing about it is that there is no f2.8 version.

As for the "if you get a good copy", it is not that big a problem. You are guaranteed to hear from those who have - or think they have - a bad copy, but not really from those whose copy is all right. So far I haven't met a lens with a manufacturing defect.

With all that said, if I had to chose one, I'd go with the 55mm.

Gotsta be happy with that. the 1:1 is unreal.
You may have to keep it !

Can you guess if the lens profile correction is on or off? :)
