G2 and infrared filter?

Has anyone here used a G2 with an infrared filter to good effect? If so, which filter did you use?

Any IR photo samples?

Thanks!

Mick, I did a search before posting, but found nothing that answered my question directly. The only person who actually had a G2 and had bought a Hoya infrared filter for it hadn't yet used it.

So, I'm still hoping someone will respond. (-:

The good threads seem to be under G3 subjects. The G3 is the same as the G2 for infrared. Do a search for "G3 IR" in the subject. Here's one good one:

I've given it a try with the Hoya R72 on my G2. It takes long exposures, so if there is any wind then leaves are blurry. etc. But there are some fine example from the thread above.

MIck is right.

Ive used the Hoya R72 with my G2 and G3. Both produce exceptional resiults. Tripod, small aperture, manual focus for adjusting depth of Field.

Make beautiful panoramas. Set custom white balance for great duotones, or tritones. Used a lot of different film IR, but the digital makes better IR in my opinion.

Interesting, I thought the Canon Powershot G2 (not photoshot G2, as in http://www.aalto-setala.net/gallery/ir/index.htm ) is supposed to have an IR filter (that is, a device blocking or atenuating IR radiation to improve selective visible sensitivity). In this line, the G2 is supposed to be "not so good" for IR photography. The G1 was better because it did not have any IR blocking device. Also consider that focus for IR is not the same as focus for visible.

Mick and Dave, thanks so much for your helpful input.

That's true. We G2 and G3 owners are just making the best of a bad IR deal. With the G1 you can use far shorter exposures.

Kastor,

There is a lapsus on http://www.aalto-setala.net/gallery/ir/index.htm

Just place the mouse pointer on some large image like http://www.aalto-setala.net/gallery/ir/irgallery/HTML/1.htm
and you would see full Exif data (Canon Powershot G2, ... etc).

Check also the direct comparison between G2 and G1 at

It is a common misconception that the G1 does not have a hot mirror -- it does. It's just not as strong as the G2 and G3.

As for focus, I get excellent results with P mode and auto-focus -- I never use manual focus and don't believe it is necessary. Although I use a G1, the auto-focus worked fine when I tested it with my G2 and a Hoya R72.

I would agree with Don in using the P mode and auto focus with
the G3/R72 as well. I performed some tests using different modes
with auto and manual focus. Auto focus normally works fine for
the G3/R72 if other issues are appropriately addressed. I believe
that auto focus is the more convenient and correct way.
