Pv, Fn and Record buttons

Just wondering what function you assign to these buttons and why.

I am currently using the Fn button for Image Area and have used it for Virtual Horizon.



I have the Pv button set to its default setting, Preview, although I admit I do not have good understanding of how this is helpful and I never use it.



I have the Record button set for ISO adjustment as this is very helpful to be able to change with one hand during shooting.

I assign My Menu to the fn button on all my bodies -past and present. In My Menu I put all the menu items that I might need to access in a hurry. Preview button I have left as is, but apparently you can't preview DOF on anything wider than 2.8. So if you're looking for a slice of "in focus" with a fast lens don't expect for the pv button to give you an actual preview.

You guys make me think, I've never used My Menu may be I should - save me from looking everywhere for a particular function such as ISO limitations. I assign my Fn to Virtual Horizon and use it frequently to ensure the camera is properly alighted. I did assign the Record Button but completely forget what is it I've assigned it to :-(

Pv: preview on some of the custom menus

Record: ISO in photo mode (not D700)

AEL-AF: image area (not D700 or D4)

AF-ON :AF

Using the i button as My Menu as most of things I use are there

I have ended up with most assignments the same on all menus and all bodies to avoid confusion. The D700 lets me use the Fn button for spot as well as bracketing with turn of command and subcommand dials.

That's true for me as well - most things I use are covered by the I-button. I think using either the Pv or Fn for spot neutering is a good suggestion for me, with the other assigned to image area. I think this is a good setup for sport and wildlife shooting.

I wish the 'i' button was My Menu, i.e. customisable. Those shortcuts are what Nikon think I want...!

Considering a D750 at the moment, and the option of having 'record' as 'ISO' is quite appealing...

My Menu is the way to go. As I said in an above post, I set mine to fn but it doesn't have to be that button. And for me, except for never changing My Menu from the fn button, I assign other buttons for what I need at that particular time

One nice improvement on the D810 is that now when you assign My Menu it goes directly into My Menu and not to the top item in it a la D800/e

Since i set up the most frequent used item in the mymenu, 99.9% of the time i only need to come here. Therefore, 99.9% of the time i hit the menu, it will go to Mymenu (no need to assign to fn or pv button for me).

Fn button set to image area...I largely shoot football games and often adjust crop between Fx, Dx, & x1.2 to balance composition/file size(buffer utilization).

Pv button set to My Menu...same reasons as many have already mentioned.

Movie Rec button set to ISO. I often shoot in M, so having this set to ISO lets me manage all aspects of exposure(ISO/aperture/shutter) without ever taking my eye off of viewfinder.

Press the "menu" button? It will take you to the last page (shooting menu, mymenu, custom menu etc) you were in. As i have most used things added to "mymenu", i will almost all the time get into mymenu each time i press the "menu" button.
