I've had my eyes opened by our friends at Canon. I own a 10-D, and love it, BUT I have been royally ripped off. I bought a BG-ED3 battery pack/grip about a year ago, and it stopped functioning. I looked thru the literature in the box, and there was no mention of a warranty, so I called our friends at customer "service". I was told that the item had NO WARRANTY at all, other than it would work fresh out of the box. If the item worked the day you opened it, and stopped the next, then you are S.O.O.L.! He told me that this was the case for many of the accessories that Canon sells. If this is not true, please correct me! If any of you have the grip with the original literature, please let me know if you have any warranty information for me.

I absolutely loved the Canon corporation until today. I just hope that the customer service guy was mistaken. Thanks.

This is why you need to buy from a good vendor. However, that will not save you after a certain time period.

Most retailers will at least let you return it for the first 14 days or 30 days if it turns out to be defective.

Also, while it's not warrantied, I believe I've heard of Canon performing a "pro bono" fix of a BG-ED3 that quit working for somebody.

I don't know about you, but 14 or 30 days for an item costing 180 bucks is of little consolation to me. Canon, BTW, did not offer to do anything for me. I will be sure to avoid any product of theirs that I can obtain from others in the future.

Thanks for your response.

Could be worse, you could buy a $6,000 lens from Nikon and have them laugh at you when it breaks.

In the case of the grip with Canon, it's too bad it's not covered as it seems to be of worse quality than almost anything they sell, and could really use it. Perhaps there is a link there, who knows.

This could get interesting... I bought a BG-ED3 grip about 5 weeks ago. It will auto-focus but will not fire. I called the Canon 800 number and the rep there told me to send it to the Irvine address and to include the invoice for the warranty work. I'm sending it off tomorrow. WIll let you know how it goes.

You guys sure are spoiled east of the Himalayas. Ralph Nader rules. Over here in this neck of the woods, once you leave the store, too bad. You'll be lucky to get even a 7 day return policy (rather an exchange policy, no such things as refunds). Changed your mind - better to do that prior to plonking down the money.

If you want a extended grip, no choice but to go with Canon as no 3rd party makes the accessory.

It's only $180 - get another and hope for the best.

I try to live up to these words. Do you?
Film? What do you mean, film?

in california you have 90 days.

but what does it matter? canon doesnt have lifetime warranties on things, and you said you've had it over a year. best warranties you get nowadays from manufacturers is only 1 year.

Mitch,

Now that you mentioned it, i really never looked at what i may assumed will be part of the purchase, pieces of paper that say canon will be responsible for the quality of the stuff we buy, be it a main lens or an accessory.

My confidence is borne out of my dealers desire to service me. I buy canon because of the technology they have. the equipment has to perform, period. When the system does not do what you paid for, your relationship with your vendor should carry you the rest of the way. your dealer should have a relationship with canon to replace the busted parts FOC, period.

That's why be careful where you buy your gear. get them only from reputable resellers. Ergo, go back to the store where you bought the grip, he should be able to take care of canon.

I think your comments are a bit misleading. Most Canon accessories come with a warranty. The exception are ones that do not contain electronics. The battery grip is just a few of switches and contacts. There is nothing electronic to go wrong, so there isn't shouldn't be much need for a warranty. (When was the last time you got a warranty on a cable?)

Given that there isn't much to that battery grip, I'd check for something simple that's wrong with it before getting too excited.

Ouch.

At least in the EU, manufacturers are legally responsible for defects in materials and craftmanship with no time limit. Manufacturer guarantees on top of that are optional. So if a Big-Ed fails and it can be shown that it fails because of a manufacturing defect (not misuse or normal wear-and-tear), the manufacturer has to repair or replace it, no matter when it happened. In theory anyway. The US has some pretty stringent consumer-protection laws as well: check them out, you might be able to have it fixed if you raise a stink -- and if it was a manufacturing defect.
