Good-bye Sony. Until we meet again.

I understand your motivation...enjoy your new camera...and yes you have indeed sparked an interest in sharing why someone switches. I have no specific brand loyalty -

Mamiya 645, Mamiya Rb67, Toyo 4x5 Field, Canon d30, Canon d60, Canon 20d, Canon 5d, Canon M, Nikon d600, Nikon V1, Olympus e-M5, Sony 3N, Sony a7. I'm all over the map! Its my hobby and I am very fortunate to have a nice job and the means to pretty much do whatever I want with the hobby.

So I was very keen in explaining why I switched from the Oly E-M5 to the Sony brand (I replied earlier). Again, good luck with your new camera...above all, there is really no wrong choice.

I made the rash decision last night to sell off my NEX 7 in favor of an Olympus OM-D E-M5.
you don't want to use E-M5 unless you are cash/credit strapped and can't get E-M1 instead... now that recent firmware enabled EFCS with Panasonic sensor in E-M1...

Oh really! Well there you go. I still would have switched as I'm interested in a larger sensor...however that is nice to know.

com·punc·tion [kəmˈpəNG(k)SH] ən a feeling of guilt or moral scruple that follows the doing of something bad. "spend the money without compunction"

Lots of people own different systems. Several systems. I was on a Sony forum in 2002 with my then-new DSC-F717. Loved it. Still own it. Until the iPhone made it unnecessary to do so, kept it in my car trunk, even after I went DSLR Nikon.

Never felt a need to say "good-bye" by telling the 2004 Sony forum I was leaving for Nikon.
It was my way of sparking the conversation with users here on why they love their Sony mirrorless cameras; why they switched from their previous system, what they like about the IQ and post processing ability, or why they moved away from Sony like I am now. I love hearing what my peers have to say about their systems and what advice or thoughts they have on my own move.

My sincerest apologies for insulting your personal sensibilities on what an appropriate post is. I can assure you that my switch to Olympus and sharing that information was a compulsion, not a compunction.
My feeling is that this is just trolling, but have fun,

OK, "compulsion"...

" a strong, usually irresistible impulse to perform an act, especially one that is irrational or contrary to one's will."http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/will

I find the same compulsion in the Jehovah's Witnesses who feel some divine compulsion to tell me why I should leave my faith for theirs. Nothing drives them crazier than when I pull out MY Bible and suggest I'll listen to them telling me why I should convert to their religion for 30 minutes if I can have equal time to try to convert them to mine.

You've converted, everyone's happy for you. If you have a compulsion to talk MFT, there's a forum for that.

You are very rude individual.

I have in no way argued for the Olympus system over Sony's in order to gain converts; I have expressed my personal opinions based on what I have experienced with the system and researched, and in turn asked other users to share the same. My desire is to get more opinions on the subject because I happen to be interested in the experience and arguments of my peers.

Every other poster that has contributed so far added to this dialogue to continue discussion. You on the other hand mocked my original posting by referring to me in the third person, as if I was unable to see it, and now mock my response.

Thank you for insulting me, twice no less, instead of simply moving on and avoiding a topic you obviously don't want to discuss.

I had an Oly E-M5. I sold it after a few months of use. Key reason -

1) Shutter shock being a key one. Its real and affects the camera. To work around it you have to apply a delay to the shutter. End result is that it slows the camera down. Its a pity because the interface is quite good and the camera as a whole is small and well built.

2) I was not impressed with the small sensor and in fact I personally think its noisy. Many will disagree with that statement...but I found the noise level around 1600 and above not so good for my personal expectations.

The big thing going for Olympus is their glass...its very good. There is no denying that. In fact I found the Oly 12-40 zoom the best zoom I have ever had. Period.

So I decided to give a measly little Sony 3N a try. Pleasantly surprised by its clean sensor. Understand that I also own a Nikon D600 and before that had a Canon 5D Classic. So I have a certain level of expectations out of a sensor.

Well after the Oly experience and then finding a nice little gem in the Sony 3N, I decided it was time to give the Sony a7 a try. So far I'm impressed by it. Yes it is short on glass, especially at the wide end...but Sony and other third parties will close that gap shortly.

What is key for me is that the Sony has a first curtain shutter.

The E-M5 does not have it, the Nikon D600 and of course the Canon 5D classic does not have it. I find the days of the Optical View Finder numbered. It has its issues, specifically inaccurate sometimes unpredictable AF results. Yes the micro-adjustments work...but its a compromise at best. Yes you can use Live View...but that is such a slow experience its hardly worth it to me...and on the D600 the Live View exposure algorithm is different than the one used in the OVF!

So I am happy for the moment with the Sony a7, its not perfect but its a pretty darn good implementation. I will be selling my D600 and some of the Nikon lenses in the near future.

I wanted a small full-frame camera that is light and has accurate AF. The Sony delivers.

Did you make a mistake. No you didn't. Enjoy your camera, take photos and relax...the Oly is a fine camera. Just not the camera for this picky photog.

Lenses are one of the main draws to the Olympus system for me as well as the IBIS and crop factor for my wildlife work. That in combo with the IQ I've stared at for the last month or so is what finally did me in.

I'm scared and excited about the smaller sensor size! The images I've seen make me confident that I'll be happier than what the NEX 7 gives, but the real test will be when I start shooting in the next week and get to compare side by side. Logically a 16mp sensor for the 4/3 makes since to me since a FF is basically 2x larger: 34.6x26 at 32mp. Or is that totally flawed thinking?

Your points are great: I've read about the shutter shock issue, but will it really hurtful for someone that shoots handheld 99% of the time? For me, the ISO noise on the 7 got to be a bit much even at 800 and 1600 definitely seemed to be the limit.

I'm already drooling over the E-M1 but it would really be a stretch for my budget...

"What really sold me though? Flickr."

My feeling is that you wouldn't, OP, be able to tell the difference between an Oly and a Sony if you stared at two random prints on a wall, one from each camera. Nor do I think you could you tell the difference on a computer monitor.

There were a few reasons I went with an NEX. One, the design; I love the flat top; there is less camera to get in my way. Two, I can crop a little more out of the Sony than an Oly. Three, I like the lack of weight, compared to my DSLR collection.

As far as the images that come out of almost all of my cameras, including my smallest digicams, I really don't see much difference in quality or color, not enough to make me give one away and try another. I have no fear of making a photo look more the way I want it to after I depress the shutter, whether I've got a jpg or raw image.

I didn't base my decision on photos from other cameras I saw online. To each her or his own, though. Everyone should be allowed their own reasons for choosing the cameras they like and I don't think one reason is more valid than another.

since you already made the decision, why post it up here? what did you hope to gain?

are you asking for approval? validation? or just plain trolling?
But I wasn't happy with the overall IQ of this system despite the 24mp count- along with the ugliest jpegs I've ever seen, even raw images look dull, harsh, and somewhat dark. It was a painful shock while doing some headshots that I liked the results from my old Canon T2i more than the 7, even when adapting the same Canon EF 85mm1.8. While the ISO performance was similar, Sony's processing engine doesn't do a good job of rendering and so it looks much uglier to my eyes.
lol... if you are going to troll, at least try and be believable, o.k.?

If I had the money I would have both and try them out for about a week, but my credit reserve can't do that either.
Same here, if I had the money I would have both systems :D Hope you enjoy the EM5, it is indeed a great camera. I sold my NEX7 for the EM5 when it came out just so I can use the IBIS with my legacy lenses. Great IQ indeed but for me I did miss the shallow depth of field that I couldn't get with the EM5. I ended up back with Sony again lol There are stuffs I like from both systems but in the end Sony won me over haha

So never say good bye, you never know, you might end up with another Sony like me :D

You already made the decision to switch so what is the point of asking everyone's opinion? Are you having a buyer's remorse? Anyway, you made a bad decision, your switched is more or less convoluted. You did not do your research very well. Just look at the sensor comparison http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Comp...(brand2)/Sony/(appareil3)/736|0/(brand3)/Sony

I'm well aware of the dxo benchmark tests and appreciate them. I'm asking to see what actual people, not reviewers or photog websites, have to say about the system and their likes and dislikes.

Thank you for giving me a simple 'you made a bad choice'. Compared to the responses I got from Mr. Snyder you almost seem nice. Is it possible that you have an actual opinion to share as well, or just some stats from a website?

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the dialogue on this thread and swapped their stories and opinions. I appreciate the detail and attempt to describe what you have experienced and seen with your current/ex systems in regard to Sony, Olympus, Canon, etc.

Some of you may have seen that others have decided to not be so academically civil in this Socratic style argument. While I'm still involved with this topic, I will continue to call out those with childish behavior, and encourage others to do the same.

If you don't want to contribute to the discussions of this post than DON'T POST. It will save us both time typing.

I went the other way around. I had an OMD and sold it for a Sony A7.

To me, the Olympus colors look fake, over saturated. Other than the IBIS nothing would ever make me go back to Olympus. I prefer the neutral colors from Sony.
I too, abandoned m43 for Sony (NEX-6). Had numerous m43 cameras including the E-M5.

If you dislike the Disney colours of Olympus JPGs, try the Panasonic GX7. It is the best m43 camera I've had.

I switched to Sony for its lens selection (Zeiss 16-70mm and 10-18mm which takes filters, unlike the Panasonic 7-14). And now I'm liking Sony's IQ better than any of the M43's that I've owned. Sony also has better implementations of features I like using - Auto HDR, scene modes, Panorama sweep etc.
