Went and shot the Pirates/Cardinals baseball game with my new 10D in Pittsburgh saturday night. Had a blast.

Overall I was quite pleased with the 10D. Focuses nice and fast, higher ISO works great, body is solid. However, I would love to have had the higer FPS with the 1D. I am sure it makes it easier to capture some of the action. Still, I am pleased with the results I got.

Also, interestingly, there were only 2-3 other photographers there. One wsa using a 1D, another a D1h. However, one guy was using a Nikon 90! I couldn't believe it! Film! Compare that to the guy with the D1h....he had his notebook and was downloading and editing the images between innings. Life is good in the digital world!

All photos shot using 70-200 f2.8 L IS and 10D...ISO 800...1/1000-1/2000, f/2.8. Shot RAW+ jpg (my first time). Converted to JPGs in Canon's File Viewer (I cannot figure out how to extraxt the JPGs). Cropped, resized, a bit of USM.

Comments welcome.

I try to live up to these words. Do you?
Film? What do you mean, film?

or do all those shots look a little back focused. Hard to tell, as I am sure they are all pretty heavy crops shooting at 200mm?

Yea, they are moderate to big crops. Not sure yet about the focusing, I think its ok...noise is a factor shooting at ISO 800. but most of the shots seem to be focused ok.

....the photographer's area, right next to the dugout. Great view, it was a blast.
Were you shooting FROM the dugout, or just above it? Nice seats,
if you were in the stands.

Hmmmm, it's in the wrong forum, and his subject line is misleading.
He's lucky I looked. ;)
I don't mind "OT" posts as much as I mind people using trickery to get people to look at an "OT" post.

Just because you have a gazillion dollars worth of "L" glass and sensor bodies is no reason to envy you:-) Being an "unoffical" photographer of the "Wilkinsons", now that's reason to be envyous:-)

Obviously taken in the stands, but it is clearly in focus. ISO 1600 (amazing, huh!) 1/350th, f/2.8 70-200 at 85mm.

ISO 1600 is amazing on the 10D and 1D. And the 1Ds.

I'd say your camera is focusing fine. You just need to be careful about pictures where the player is a small part of the frame. The camera will tend to focus behind him if there's something back there with good contrast.

...that the player being a relatively small part of the frame, even though I selected center point, focused on the player and then reframed. I am pretty sure it was user error....but it sure was fun making those mistakes!

You are correct, ISO 1600 is ridiculous how good it is....and funny your choice of words....just started a new thread with that exact title!!!

I know it won't do 3200.

It's possible it's restricted to 1250, too, now that you mention it.

Nothing that intentionally underexposing 1/3 and adjusting for later in RAW conversion can't fix, though.
I thought the 1Ds could only go to ISO 1250?

probably front focus as much as yours back focuses. ;-)

Jamie, I wasn't knocking your shots, they are good shots. It's just that

I know that lens is capable of sharper images than that, so I just looked for a reason.

...I appreciate your input and your compliemnt. I don't take this stuff too seriously....and I have a pretty thick skin.

I agree, the images should be sharper, and I am trying to figure out why and impove as well. Thanks!
