Hello,

I have a dilemma - Canon 5d or 50d for concerte photography.

I would like to buy 60d or 7d but it's not possible now.

Thanks for the opinions!

Out of the 4 cameras you mention the 5d (mk1?) has the best image qualityof the 4 and long way over the 50 and 60D and also the best AF when using ONLY the center AF point

The 7D would be my choice if i need machine gun mode at 8 frames a second

which i doubt you need at a concert

Hi,

as others (partly) mentioned already, it really depends on what kind of concerts (in pubs, on a small stage, on big stages, ...) and with which lenses. You may find a 300mm to be a bit short on ff cameras in medium/big-stage concerts. But, usually, on these stages, there will be enough light to have good quality photos even with the 50D. If you plan to shoot in pubs or small places, the 5D is probably the right choice as, in most of the cases, light will be scarce in these locations and you do not need very long tele-lenses.

You can find some photos shot during a concert with a big (but I would not define it huge) stage on my website:

Sorry i don't agree, i think the 50 would be the better choice, I used a 50D for two years in low light conditions and when I switched to the 5d mk2 I had a real terrible time with the auto-focus in low light conditions, the 50D was so much better; Of course when you can get the focus locked on the quality of the 5Dmk2 is much better, however I've missed hundreds of photos due to this.

Ian, I have never used a 5D/5DII so I cannot comment on this. My post was more about the fact that it also depends on the environmental condition and on the lenses, not only from the camera. A 50D is surely a very good choice, until June this year I've shot many concerts by using a 7D and a 40D with very good results. The 5DIII just made the things much easier in some situations.

Alberto
