V1 review Up @ Imaging Resource

OK, please bear with me here. even though the specs say "mac OS 9.2," my system (I'm running 10.2.5) will automatically recognize the camera when plugged into one of my USB ports or my USB hub, right? brilliant! (natch, it's a mac!) if so, unless, the reviews/sample pics turn up something unexpected, count me in! many thanks for your help.
BB
I have a P5 and a powerbook on OSX, and it works fine!

Fred/
BUT, am I the only Mac user that's bugged by the non-compatibility
with OSX?

Who knows--maybe Amazon has some pull...?
Hey, all you who have already bought the DSC-V1, when are you
expecting delivery of it? When will it be available commercially,
in stores such as Best Buy (in the US)? Any idea? The Sony site
just says "coming in may". That isn't very helpful.

Also, for those of you who have been participating with the website
for much longer than I have, when is Phil likely to post a indepth
review of the V1?

Thanks,
K!

I called my local store to put a deposit on it and they are very
candid with me. They are a HUGE Sony dealer and they don't expect
it until July.
They have always been right on the money with their timetables.

I was hoping for a week or two to start hearing about the actual
cam...
--Well I hope your store is wrong because Disney is coming up fast, like June. It does make you wonder I called B&H photo and they are not even talking about the V-1 yet.

True. I find the 2-sec timer VERY useful for candid night pics.
It is hard to believe they would leave out something this simple and obvious, but I saw some threads about this on the 717, so apparently that is the way Sony does it.

I wonder if this is something that could eventually get fixed with a firmware update?
2. Despite its 1 oz lighter weight, the V1 looks less pocketable,
and more chunky.
I'll reserve comment until I actually handle the V1.
Yeah, I would love to see some pictures of a V1 next to an S50, it is hard to visualize. With that protruding lens, the V1 I believe is 1/2 inch thicker.
Mem sticks are not over priced now. Sandisk 128meg sticks are cheap
here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
256 meg CF cards are going for as little as $35 with rebates these days. What's the cheapest 256 meg memory stick pro?
True. However, I do not use this feature on my Canon S50.
It is particularly useful on the S50 for doing the hyperfocal pre-focusing trick, which is a fairly effective workaround for the horrendously bad low light auto-focus. This obviously would not be an issue with the V1 though. See this thread for more info on the hyperfocus stuff...

At this point, the best we can do is look at the previews that have been posted and sort through the info as best we can. Until we get some images from full production camera, we'll all have to play the waiting game.

Ok, I think I have this figured out -- Sony sells an optional wired remote control for the V1 for $49. Not having a shorter timer is not going to be a big enough drawback to actually stop people from buying the camera, but many people who do buy it and use it on a tripod will become extremely frustrated by it, and spend the extra money for the remote. A really brilliant marketing move I must admit.

Either Sony really is this manipulative and underhanded, or they are so incredibly stupid that they do not realize how important a 2 second timer is. Which is it?

I just got an email from a supplier here in Australia and he told me the ETA was 15 June, but hopefully sooner.

I don't think anyone has any idea personally.

Its just shown up as 'new model, waiting for more details' on Sony UK's computers. It wasn't there last week. They have fairly short lead times on their sales systems, so I'd hope it'd be out in May in the UK.

I think that Sony is just incredibly stupid, as the V1 does have a lot of "extras" that other digicams don't have. They are not a "traditional" camera maker like Canon, Olympus & Nikon. Hence, they are a bit removed from the real-world experiences of photo shooters' inputs ... Just my $0.02

--Yes like the traditional camera maker Nikon and the 5700 that is really good for macro and nice bright sunny days. I guess Nikon forgot to listen to the people because many of use like to shoot pictures in low light situations. Oh I forgot the Canon people did a good job with the viewfinder I guess they had the people in mind. I do like seeing the lens while looking through the VF and forget it if you are using a tele or wide.

I guess what I am trying to say here all these camera's have their faults not only Sony.

But leaving out a 2 second timer is just too obvious and stupid, and incredibly easy to fix if they wanted to. I really think they did it to force people to buy the extra $50 remote control.

Between this and the price of memory stick pro, it really feels like Sony has a rip-off their customers mentality, and may be enough to make me go with the Canon S50 instead of the V1.

Or am I just being a paranoid conspiracy theorist?

According to the Imaging Resource review, memory stick Pro had no advantage when used in the V1. The reviewer stated that the V1 doesn't have the internal upgrades to take advantage of MS Pro speeds, etc.

I am testing out a Canon S50 now. It's an excellent camera. However, I'm too spoiled by Sony's lowlight capabilities (via an F717) to pass on on the V1. I'm returning my S50 shortly and wait for the V1.

Memory sticks aren't an issue with me. I've always been of the belief that memory media shouldn't be a factor in determining a digicam purchase.

I had high hopes for the Pentax 550. But, Phil's review has downed my enthusiasm for that cam ...

--I also returned the S-50 but my reason's were red eye. I did not feel like going inot photoshop to fix red eye on all indoor shots.
