d10 front focuses PROOF!!

I took my picture of a ruler, but can't get it to back focus. I wonder what's wrong?

Seriously, all this stuff of taking photos of rulers and batteries and newspaper print is just getting strange. And even if this were proof of anything, it would be proof that YOURS has a problem, not everyone's.

I just sit back in amazement of all those haunted by their purchase and can't get to work taking pictures of real life. These are the same people who drive car dealers mad coming in saying that they let go of the steering wheel and the car won't drive straight (even though it's probably the wind) or that they've measured the gap in the door jam to be 4mm off on one side.

For most of these guys, they were perfectly happy until the "test" and now they can't sleep at night. It's just sad, IMO.

You won't see the focusing issue unless you go up to F2.8 @ 80mm. as this guy has suggested.
After seeing all this commotion about the 10D front focusing and
back focusing because SOME people got a defective camera, I decided
to put the "issue" to rest. The 10D does NOT front focus OR back
focus because MINE doesn't. Here's the proof...

The card was lined up even with the 20 inch mark and shot at ISO
800 at 1/250 using a Canon 24-85 at 85mm and f/4.5 (it's widest
aperture at that focal length). This is a cropped image.
NOW, if you want to say YOUR 10D doesn't focus properly, that'd
be true. If you say THE 10D doesn't focus properly, that'd be
untrue.

just repeated the test using a tripod and timer
interesting two pictures were taken in succesion
with no changes in postion oor camera setting
one picture demonstrates perfect focus and one demonstrates front focus

now i understand why some of my pictures withthis camera are perfect and some are out of focus. again for both of these pictures i focused on the 20 actually only on the first one
the second was just a repeat exposure with nothing changed.

+4EV is the level I noted a lot of this kind of "Random" focus (the camera picks its own focal plane) with my camera 10D in wide angle 24-35mm. It is ok in very bright light.

I used a tripod, remote release, studio flash, yada yada. Also tested outdoors and at a local theatre production. I know the vast majority of 10D cameras work fine but despite the whining to the contrary, some of them do have issues.

P.S.

The lenses I used for the tests were a Sigma 105EX macro, Canon 70-200L 4.0 and Canon 28-105. All 3 lenses work fine with a Rebel 2000, Eos-3, D30 and D60.

So what if your's doesn't! Be glad! What help is that for people that have the problem. Do you think your comment will go into a pot that helps Canon quality control statistics? Or does that minimize the problem for those experiencing it?

hey dont go throwing your toys out of the cot.

The original posted made it sound like he believes that this is a problem with ALL 10D's.

I simply informed him that some of the people here do not experience the problem.

chill dude !

further testing
just shot 10 jpegs in a row on fixed ruler target on tripod using timer
all settings remained unchanged 2/10 perfect focus
8/10 front focus.
i would like to hear from anyone else who is willing to try this test
shoot 10 consecutive pictures on a tripod see if your focus varies
evenif nothing is changed from picture to picture

Well, the original post claimed that all 10D's front focus. Or so it would appear to an uninformed reader, such as a newbie who had just come here.

Nicolas I think made a reasonable counterpoint that he's had no problems with his.

I'd agree with your comment had the original posting been different, but it wasn't.

Any DSLR beats unexposed film.

ps i guess the real question i should be asking is should i ship it to
canon ups or fedex?
;) joke ha ha
got to joke or i may begin to cry
the good new is the 24-70L is not the culprit

I was disheartened in my case because Canon couldn't tell me how long it would take to fix it and send it back and the dealer couldn't exchange it unless I wanted to wait 60 days 'til they got another shipment. I ended up getting another D60 and with the price dropping on D60s I can't justify the upgrade price.

Hi Bill, no proof needed. I'm sure many cameras have this to some extent. Although my 10D has been giving great results, I was somewhat afraid to do a focus test on it cause if it proved bad I would be sending it to Canon for repair post haste.

I caved in last Sunday night and set an 18 inch ruler at a 45 degree angle on my table. I then put on my 50 f1.4 lens set to f 1.4 and took several shots at the 9 inch mark at distances ranging from about 18 to 36 inches. They were all spot on at the 9inch mark, I repeated this manual focus and using a 28-70L as well and everything checked out ok. If anyones camera cannot focus on the midpoint of a ruler at a 45 degree angle using a fast wideopen lens, then it needs to be sent in or taken to a canon dealer with trained technicians for the adjustment.

Good luck and hope your repair is a quick on.

my original post
""10d front focuses proof"
i don't understand why people interpret this
as "all 10d front focuses proof"
but anyway after much testing i have confirmed and indeed i have
a problem and will be sending my camera back to canon
i still would be interested and i am sure many others as well as to know how
wide spread this problem is. Most people may not notice their camera has a flaw
because DOF may correct for the focusing errors and unless you are shooting

wide open it may not always be apperant. in fact many of my photos were outstanding

however a few seemed out of focus which seemed unusual to me since i am an experienced slr film shooter and have not had significant problems before. So i investigated further and sure enough there is a flaw in MY camera. Worst of all th eflaw is inconsistent The value of this post is many of u may have the same problem and may have not noticed YET it may be wise to test your camera since it can be fixed for free or returned if you are within the warranty or return time. Some of you may find indeed you have the same problem and may thank me for drawing your attention to it. Others who do not have this problem may feel comforted that they do not have to suffer. No one likes to dish out $1500+ tax and receive a

lemon. As far a $1500 go this is still exspensive at least for me and for this price i expect quality.
