Don't take photos of oil storage tanks

Yes, but I don't remember seeing reports that the IRA relied on scouting out and photographing the sites of their attacks. On the other hand, we have seized from Al Qaeda terrorists still photos and video tapes of embassies they have attacked and other locations that clearly were potential targets. They used the photos and videos to make their attacks more deadly. Their methodology is a clue that we can use to watch for and try to prevent potential targets.
The UK mainland has been under threat of terrorist attack for years
(the IRA) and while there are security cordons in London it doesn't
stop people taking pictures.

Kenn,

It pains me to let you know that it is in fact against the law to lie to an FBI agent. One of our state public officials is currently serving time in a federal pen for denying knowledge of something to an FBI agent in an interview, when the FBI was able to prove to the jury that he did in fact know about the matter.

Please note that this has been the law FOR A LONG TIME. It is not some new conservative knee-jerk reaction to 9/11. The public official in question was prosecuted by a Democratic U.S. Attorney appointed by President Clinton.

Last night, 2 FBI agents came to my house to discuss photos I was
taking of the oil storage tanks near my house. They are quite
beautiful, painted a bright white which stands out from the rest of
this residential area.

It seems like there is a security risk for photographing things
like this. These officers were very serious. Definitely not
people to joke around with. They mentioned having to investigate
other photographers who take pics of birds because there was a
controversial site in the distance.

I had to show my receipts for my new 1D, show them the photos--to
exif data confirmed I was where I said I was--and otherwise prove I
was an artist and not someone to worry about.

Interesting and scary. M.

Jonathan,

I feel that you have been mislead concerning quite a bit of the
information you're posting here...I mean no disrespect, but simply
want to fill you in.

The problem is not that the US needs to steal oil, we simply need
additional countries to purchase it from. Currently we buy
somewhere around 80% of the worlds oil resources, and have ran out
of states to "point our guns at."
I would love to see where you come up with you numbers. You are the misleading one here. You facts are not true.

According to a link on US Dept Of Energy's website, in 2002, the US consumed approx. 19.7 million barrels of oil a day. 26% of the world total. 11.2 million barrels are imported. Which is around 57% of our consumption. Of the oil that is imported, 40% of it comes from OPEC nations. The Persian Gulf region supplied around 20% of our total imports. The top suppliers to the US are Canada 1.9 Million barrels a day (MBD), Saudi Arabia 1.5 MBD, Mexico 1.5 MBD. Venezuela 1.4 MBD. The US produces 8.2 million barrels a day from our own soil.

Source: http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/usa.html

We have an enormous amount of oil on our soil, but the left will not allow us to extract it. Why is that?
You're right...we do need to look at what threats countries
present. Now all but one of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudi, and the
other "one" was not NOT Iraqi. Also...North Korea presents probably
the largest security threat to the United States, but we aren't
doing anything about that. N. Korea has nuclear weapons, for this
the US is certain, they also have advanced Chemical and Biological
weapons programs, once again - we are sure of this too. Why aren't
we doing anything there?
We can all thank William Jefferson Clinton and Jimmy Carter for allowing the North Koreans to go ahead with their nuclear programs. They both pandered to the North Koreans and gave in to their demands for the US to feed them AND allow them to build nuclear reactors. Are you suggesting that we go to war with N. Korea next?
Also, i find it sad that "countries which torture it's people"
isn't a threat to you. Human suffering affects everyone. So,
because they didn't use nuclear weapons the Hutu's which killed a
MILLION Tutsi's in Rawanda aren't important. A MILLION PEOPLE and
it's not important to you...it's a shame.
Again, William Jefferson Clinton sat back and did absolutely zero to help those people that were slaughtered. He was more worried about getting BJ's from a 22 year old government intern than he was about Africa. I do care about them. Where was your voice when they were being slaughtered. I wrote a letter to Bill Clinton asking him why we did nothing. What did you do?
Concerning who's weapons the Iraqi Army uses....well you have it
about half right. They are using Russian weapons...that the US
bought for them. Also, let us not forget that the US financed the
implimentation of Heussein's regime.
Again you are incorrect. Primarily, China, Russia and France supplied Iraq with the majority of the weapons that Iraq has (had) today. Many of the weapons used today, were purchased with Food for Oil money, money that was intended to go back to the Iraqi people to feed them. The US did support Iraq, (but after Saddam came to power, and after the Iran/Iraq war started) mainly out of fear that Iran was going to overrun Iraq and spread its wacko fundamental ways to the rest of the middle east. The US supported Iraq by giving them food credits which enabled them to use their money to purchase weapons from Russia, France, Germany, and many others. The US did not supply Iraq with weapons or the cash to buy them. We did supply them with Iranian troop intelligence that allowed them to fight back to Iranians. Remember that we were not friends with the Iranians at that time (remember the hostages), nor or we today.

Again, where are you getting your info from, it is incorrect.
Anymore questions? Feel free to post them and I'll anwser you.
I look forward to your reply.
JL

Maybe some of the knuckleheads around here will read your post and learn something from it. People look at me when I walk around with my 1D and 100-400 lens. Why wouldn't a security guard be alarmed when he sees someone taking pictures of fuel tanks in a populated area? If I was him, I would report it to the FBI too. The US government is asking it's citizens to report suspicious activity. Wouldn't that fall under that category? I think it does.

The IRA's attacks do not compare to what happened to the US on 9/11.

Andreas,

I don't think that anyone outside of the United States has an
accurate grasp of how the events of September 11, have affected
Americans, and how betrayed many of the American people feel by the
international community.
I don't think many americans have ever had a chance to think about how the americans affect the life of non americans. Until now, that is. We can clearly see how americans are liberating the iraqies because they love them.
You have no idea the feeling that we had on September 11 as we
listened to the reports come in and those of us in large cities had
to sit here waiting and wondering if it was going to be our turn
next. And we learned that these people didn't attack the US
because of our foriegn policies, they attacked us because they
hated us just for being Americans.
Obviously there is no link betwen the two!

They didn't crash those planes
into military bases or US airbases. They crashed them into
buildings filled with thousands of innocent non-combatants.
Don't you get it? Not into a supermarket, into the WORLD TRADE CENTER. WORLD, TRADE, CENTER. That is the message.
And what we learned was that there is no debating with extremists,
because to them we do not deserve to live. And when we said that
we would no longer tolerate regimes that sanctioned terrorism the
international community responded enthusiastically in support.
That enthusiasism was certainly short-lived. For it certainly
seems that the international community is all in favor of ending
terrorism as long as it doesn't actually require doing anything,
and is more than willing to criticize anyone who to attempts to do
anything.

By so adamantly attacking US attempts to bring forth a UN
resolution that would have allowed the UN to take a forceful role
in enforcing Iraq's proscribed weapons, the UN did nothing but show
Iraq that the UN could not work together to enforce resolutions
that it had already passed. If the member UN nations had presented
a united front, the current situation could possibly been avoided
once Iraq realized that the UN was united and intended to back up
it's resolutions.
"If you just all did it my way! I must be right, because I have more bombs!"

It's only manipulation. The US gvt was waiting and ready for such a thing (911) to happen. They certainly know how to take advantage of it to increase their world shamefull domination with the backing of their people. (the likes of jonathan who is fully brainwashed and drooling over the possibility of killling more foreigners) Remember how the Russians were the #1 security threat a few decades ago? It's just like religion. You need a satan (or saddam) to scare the people into doing whatever you tell them is good for them.

Imagine the US at peace with all other countries. LOL When you are the biggest bully, you can't trust no one. Not even your citizens.
And soon this war will end, as war's do. And extremist's in the
middle east will continue to plot ways to kill Americans, not
because we attacked Iraq, but simply because we are Americans. And
the rest of the world can sit back and bask in their moral
superiority, and continue to think that American's are spoiled
children, or cowboys, or whatever the fashionable insult is that
week.

And I will play in the backyard with my three-year-old and bask in
the joy and wonder that fathers everywhere enjoy whether they are
American or French or Iraqi and realize that whatever the rest of
the world thinks of me and Americans, means very little to me...
It's easy to think nothing of others, when you feed on them and interfer in their internal affairs. Not so easy to ignore a country that is shamelessly tricking the game in such a way as to make you a perpetual loser and starve your country. Just what do you think is the FMI doing in the world today?

The best propaganda is not obvious to its people. But, try as it can, it can't fool the foreigners. And the propaganded will soon call the foreigners anti- for simply asking them to think about their automatic thoughts.

Please stay in Tanzania or wherever you live and hope that nobody
comes for you in the near future.
Andreas, stop it! Can't you see some poster is scared to death? He thinks killing foreigners will relieve his anxiety and increase his self-esteem. He has a way of seeing the "dangerous" world very similar to that of his president: If you are not with me, you are against me, and I'll crush you so you stop scaring me.

this stuff will not make the US saver to life in. A backpack and a
videocamera will do the job much better for a terrorist. It is so
easy to get images from almost anything with a good hidden
videocamera. At least the FBI can say later they did something.

No one can really protect a country fom terrorist if they want to
get you.
At long last, someone speaking sense!

Unfortunately, masses don't act from sense. They act from emotions. And emotions that are needed to conduct the secret agenda of the people pulling the ropes behind a president are FEAR and FEELING That this president is doing a wonderful job of fighting your fears.

And I'm glad I don't live in a country where people are STUPID
enough to run around playing with dynamite.
Yah!, I mean, why did they invent dynamite afterall? Not to prevent floodings I hope?
(know the full story before calling people stupid)

I was in Northern America on that day, btw. Not in NY, but close. I have also family who died on 9/11 and colleagues from work. This does not change the fact that "revenge" is a very immature reaction and does not provide relief for grieve at all; the dead don't come alive again by creating more dead - "eye for eye makes the world go blind". I strongly believe that the 9/11 events were and are exploited in very cheap way by political circles (not just in the US, btw).

Andi

We are living in scary times. I'm glad they are keeping on top of
potential threats. I'm sure it wasn't fun, but it's reassuring
that they are doing it.
Agreed. Interestingly enough I was stopped by FBI in a coastal city 40 years ago and closely questioned about photography. They were looking for someone specific whom I resembled, and after some discussion and examination of my ID they said they would have to take me in for further verification of identity - unless I would agree to let them look in my mouth - they had a good dental description of the suspect! After examining my teeth with a small flashlight (very briefly) they apologised profusely (they had been very polite) and let me go on about my business. So this isn't really NEW...

You chose to be antagonistic and not describe why the people were running around with dynamite, so I chose to be antagonistic in my reply. Please don't think I was dumb enough to have bought into your efforts to conceal that there was a serious purpose to the dynamiting.

I do think your posting is stupid, and I take offense at your suggestion that my support for my country's course of action is a result of foolishly and blindly being taken in by propaganda, as if I am too stupid to think for myself.

Are you in favour of locking up all the persons of arabic extraction living in the US?

Would you also lock up those with American nationality, or just those who don't have it?

Bernard
I was on a bus in Israel in 1973. The bus stopped and a security
guard got on. He made a quick pass down the aisle and exited thru
the back door. I commented to the local man next to me that it was
a pretty quick security check. "He is looking for Arabs," the man
answered. With all this willingness among Americans to tolerate
meddling by the government, I'd be curious to know who'd like to
see all Arabs living in this country rounded up and locked away.

We back Israel in their "security" measures, why shouldn't we take
the same measures at home?

................ coming to your home and intimidating you like that it just being belligerent. They won’t catch too many terrorists this way if they peruse and investigate each and every citizen taking photos on locations.

Japanese spy rings in Pearl Harbor relied on nothing more than tourist snaps to gather targeting data for their strike wing, at this rate each and every tourist should be locked up in jail as soon as they land in the US and only released again to board the next flight home – have a nice holiday.

Time to snap out of this paranoia USA, stand up and be men and women again – remember an old saying from the “Magnificent Seven” series …………….
