DAMN! What lens is this guy using??

How did I know you would be one of the people to answer the
question.. damn you :) Also on a side note your pictures from the
70-200 AFS VR made me save my pennies for one. Thanks to you I'm
going broke!!
He has a tendency to do that!

You know your lenses :) As you can see I really don't.. still kind of new to photography. Thanks!
17-35mm AFS on the camera (F100 or D100) in his hand
24-120mm on the D100 hanging from his left arm.
Either 300mm 2.8 or 400mm (maybe 500?) on F5 or D1 series over his
shoulder

I got a geeky question... what camera straps is he using and where
can I get them? I like detail itmes...
Wow - I was going to comment on how horrible they look! LOL

I use black Optech USA Neoprene straps on all my cameras. They are much more comfy than the woven straps, they are waterproof, and not abrasive on the back of your neck should you have to swing your cameras around. The ones I have also have a weight reduction woven strap on top of the neoprene... very nice and best of all - LOW PROFILE! I don't need some schmoe eyeing my camera with a big yellow NIKON DIGITAL strap on it declairing the value of my gear. It's hard enough to blend in as it is.

Joe,

That is exactly what I am looking for!! Guess I'm gonna do a search to see where I can find some of those Neoprene straps. The strap with my D100 hurts the back of my neck sometimes and is uncomfortable and I only have a lightweight 24-85 AFS. I can't imagine having a heavier lens then using that strap around my neck would feel like..

i'm curious as to why would he use a 500mm lens. import shows are usually crowded, too many people getting in the way of your shots. my 80-200mm is enough reach at these events.

unless he's going for really close shots?

The reason why he is using that 500mm lens at this paticular Import Show is because they had a drifting competition going on. Here are some shots from CarandModel.com. http://www.carandmodel.com/gallery/driftshowoff20030302-drift

They use Canon equipment.

But that link will show you why the guy had a 500mm to get the closer shots of those cars.

So I guess you can se one of these monsters on a monopod? Do you
any of you guys shoot nature or birds with that lens and a monopod?
What is it like?
Sports shooters very often use monopods with big glass, though you're probably more likely to see a 400 f/2.8 with a teleconverter than a 500 f/4. My guess is that nature shooters are more apt to use a tripod, but a monopod sure is a lot better than hand-holding.

This is outside turn 1 at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix CART race of a few weeks ago.
