I don't want to sound dumb here, but will this thing allow me to control the 'shutter release' on the 717? It's not really clear at the Sony site what exactly this does. What I want to do is mount the camera on a tripod and control the shutter ...well, from a dstance. Also...the Sony site has tri-pods with this remote installed on them. Same thing? Since I'll need a heavy duty tripod, might this be the way to go?

thanks!

--Yes you can snap apicture with it and it will allow you to focus also. I had a Sony tripod witht eh remote and used it with my digicam but I don't know if it would work with the 717

Help you to get cleaner photos on many circumstances when even depressing the shutter will move the camera. I've never used a tripod with a built-in remote, but I would say that it will probably not move when you depress the shutter. However, the remote has other applications like self-portraiting, gaining over a very jumpy subject (animal shots), etc...

On your tripod issue, if you want a really heavy duty tripod you'll be better finding one amongst the pros: Gitzo or Manfrotto...

Yes -- that's the whole point of this class of device, often called an "electronic cable release". It also provides remote zoom operation and camera power ON/OFF.

Not a good idea. This scheme of things really began with camcorders in mind rather than still cameras. With a tripod handle-mounted remote you can still induce camera shake, which tends to defeat the purpose. The RM-DR1 and your own choice of tripod is a better and more flexible way to go.

--Dont waist your money on the tripod with the installed remote..
Buy a good brand tripod and by the remote seperately,..
I use my RM-DR1 all the time with night shots.. Its great..

You can power on/off.... Zoom.... And yes, Auto focus with the remote by simply doing the half press on it just like on the camera, just before you shoot... Its worth it to own this item in your inventory..

I ended up getting just the hand held version of that remote. I thought that having a shutter release attached to whatever was holding the camera was not a good idea.

Sony States:

"Use the RM-DR1 to remotely control your digital camera. The AC terminal on this unit can control zoom, shutter speed and power on/off functions. Use Night view or take telephoto shots without touching the main unit. You can also use this remote control with tripods that do not have remote control functions."

The remote does NOT give you remote shutter speed control.

It provides shutter release, not shutter speed.

I am starting to use mine and am absolutely happy with it. It lets u switch the cam off and on, zoom in and out, lock focus and release the shutter. Really a must for slow shutter speeds. My wish list would of course be more controls like shutter speed or aperture setting, white balance .... hahha, the remote would probably end up costing like half the price of the camera.
