The wife and I are going to Hawaii (Big Island) on the 16 and plan to take the following. The question is am I taking to much or what did I forgot to take? We will be spending five day in the Hilo area and five days in the Kona area. About three months ago there was a post as to places to shoot. I have those places and about four books on trails and snorkeling. Any favorite place will be appreciated but I am more interest in equipment to take. Here is what I plan to take:

Gitzo 2228 CF W/Acratech ball head and Wimberley sidekick
Canon 1Ds
Canon A-1 200 and 400 film and extra batteries
Canon 16-35 mm L
Canon 24-70 mm L
Canon 100 mm 2.8 macro
Canon 100-400 mm L IS
1.4 TC
Canon 550 EX
Canon MR 14 ring light
Off camera shoe cord
Nixvue 30 GB
2 IBM 1 GB
4 Ridata 512 MB card
Singh-Ray Cir-Pol Color Intensifer
2 1Ds batteries
Battery Cahager for 1Ds
Misc books on trails, snorleling etc
Lowepro Nature Trecker and Trim Trecker to get all this stuff on the plane

I am thinking, should I take the 1D and if so why. I am also thinking about taking the 70-200 mm L IS but the other lens should give me good coverage? If I pack it all I'll have about 44lbs Since I can take two carry-ons I should be ok.

Anything I forgot to take or am I taking to much? What would you take or leave at home?
Thanks

Dont forget to send me a picture!!!!

I would take the 70-200, leave the 100mm macro at home and use extension tubes if you really need macro ability.

But that's just me..

Hi John,

Sounds fine, all of it. Ever tried paddling under water with a Nikonos IVa? Sure recommend it as a go anywhere camera with its standard 35mm lens (50mm equivalent under water). You can drop it on the sand at the beach, get it wet (obviously; I mean if you run into rough weather you can still photograph - I wouldn't stand in the rain with a Ds!), and even use it for cracking nuts if you can't find a hammer. A s/h one will cost under $400 and will be a must on any trip, believe me. I even use it for taking pics at theater plays; bright viewfinder and the quietest shutter short of a Leica M. Why the IVa and not the V? More expensive, less reliable; although V has shutter speed dial apart from Auto only on IVa but it had its niggles and anyway if you want exposure compensation go to the left side and juggle with the ISO values instead.

Have a great holiday!

Personally, I'd leave the film camera at home and take the 1D as a back up. Also agree with Murphy on the 70-200 (especially if it is the 2.8) and leaving the 100 home. I'd also go light on the books. Also, you HAVE to post photos. Have fun!

I was just there in September and I ended up using the following

17-35 2.8
28-70 2.8
70-200 2.8 IS
1.4x

And I only had film at that time so digital was not a problem. I never needed anything more than the above. I did end up using the 28-70 and 70-200 about equal amounts. Probably used the 17-35 quite a bit but not as much as the other two. Hope this helps.

I have been there many times. Suggest that you travel as light as possible and keep a good eye on your equipment.

Have a macro for flowers. especially nice up country. Wide angle for volcano views. If eruption is going on - you'll want a long lens and a tripod because you can't get too close.

Remember that the kona side of the big island can often be heavily overcast - so you you might not be shoot there as much during the day.

Wouldn't think you would need the 1d unless you were going up country to take pictures of cowboys.

John,

Had I had all the toys you have I might
have been tempted to take them all, too.
But given I only had the D60, the 28-135IS,
and a Sigma 17-35, I took that set and was quite
happy with the results. Went to Maui and
Oahu, and actually did not use the 17-35 much.
I did worry about changing lenses with the high
humidity and salt in the air, so maybe with
less fear I would have used it more.

I would have taken a 24-70L and a 70-200L IS
with 1.4x and 2x if I owned them. I think
24 is probably easily wide enough.

I think this is way too much stuff. You'll not enjoy your vacation when you'll carry all that stuff.

I'd take:

1DS + 1 spare battery + 2 microdrives + Nixvue + cir-polarizer (why take 6 CF cards if you have Nixvue?)

24-70 or 16-35 (only if you are sure about extreme wide angle), but probably not both. 1DS is full frame, so for usual shooting 24mm wide end on 24-70 is OK. Look at your 1DS pictures and see how many of them are shot wider than 24mm...

70-200 (f/4 for travel) instead of 100-400, but if you have no 70-200 then 100-400. If you have very serious about macro, then 100mm macro would be fine but to save weight, 20mm extension tube will do the trick on 70-200 for occassional flower macro.

And take only one book, another give to wife :)

If photography is not main objective of your trip, avoid taking all your stuff. Take as little as you can. Tripod is also probably unnecessary, except small tabletop one...
