Ok I need to buy a really good zoom lens :

Here are the options:

80-400VR or the 80-200 AFS 2.8 ED IFS

Can somedoy post a link or picture to a shot that they have taken with either of these or a Zoom that you think is the best thing you own..

I need something to use for hi quality shots vs. my less that perfect 24-120mm Nikkor

Thanks in advance

What is most important to you... 2.8 or the 400mm??

Like many, I have both lenses. Each for different type of assignments.

I was really looking for a super high quality zoom....

I like the 1.5 factor as it will take me a bit further with the 80-200

But I think the 2.8 will give me the quality I want....

How about a 80/400 2.8 VR...

Hmmmm....

Its a tough one I can get both at a great price were they are only about 100 buvks differance..

I will probably end up with both - but for now I will be shooting more Glamour than sports - so maybe the 2.8 is the best way to go..

Thanks Brent,

My camera is a D1x and the Heron and Snow Geese were at 400 mm and the deer were at 180 mm. I have not found a sweet spot but I have gotten shots with this lens that would have been missed If I had to use a tripod.

Here is a portrait that was shot with the AF-S 80-200 @2.8!! No flash. I have used the 80-400 for a test shoot. It's sloooooowwww for the kind of jobs I do. The AF-S 80-200 quality is suprior to the 80-400 and I need the 2.8 for those out of focus backgrounds fashion shots.

Hi

have a look at Sigma 100-300/4, a very good lens! Even sharper than my Nikkor 80-200/2.8!

Have a look if you like...

But you do not get any further with 1.5 factor! The picture will only be cropped!

Taken on a very overcast day with the VR.

It's been a while since the weathers been clear whilst I'm not stuck at work so I quickly poped over the local park..

This is with the Sigma 50-500 EX HSM APO (could they get anymore letters in there?)

all hand held @ 500mm

pretty much 70% of my Gallery now consists of the 50-500 shots (Tamron 70-300 for the rest)
