They dont like the ergonomics of the camera I fear !!!
No kidding. And having held one at my local store for about three minutes yesterday (I could not bear to hold it longer), I can only but wholeheartedly agree with this statement:

"The K-01 is by far the heaviest mirrorless camera we've handled. Even more disappointingly, the lack of a sufficient hand grip makes it not only awkward, but uncomfortable to hold. While the red and green buttons atop the camera are customizable, it is impossible to actually reach the green one with your hand in a shooting position."

All this and no EVF to boot. Good grief, Pentax.

A very limited photographer ...

Well, for one I think that it was fair and well written.

I don't know why, but I can't help but feel as though Pentax has been set to shoot itself in the foot. :(

Anyways, I truly hope the K-01 isn't a precursor to the K-3 in some way or another because that would really suck for the rest of us. Hopefully someone over at headquarters will designate a different design team to the K-3.

Well, there is K-5 for us more traditional users... with K-01 they must be going for some sort of different market, but what is it?

IQ affectionados who like to have a large selection of lenses but don't mind not having VF? How big is that group... hmmm

On the positive side, it is likely to have one of the best IQ's from existing mirrorless cameras on the market, but will that be enough to attract followers.

Strange as it may be, Q makes a lot more sense to me than this one.

common sense is anything but common

Waiting for my K-01 to be delivered (hope soon).

I'm probably fit in the people who want the k-01 for using old lenses and because most of my photos are taken using manual focus and i learned to like using LV and peaking with an NEX-3.

But NEX cameras are too small, the K-01 will surely be easier to use with more lenses than the NEX cameras.

Marc Newson comes up with some interesting art pieces but I'd hardly like to even briefly sit on one of them let alone buy one and try to take photos with it.

The good news, if you believe in God, is that it's highly unlikely Marc Newson will ever again be asked to design a camera.

Now that Ricoh has taken charge, I'm confident we'll start to see more photographer-oriented designs. Until then, I'll stick with my Pentax "full frame" film bodies.

BTW, I'm not knocking the K-7/K-5 at all, as I think they got it right with that design. But not the Q or the K-01.

Not even an articulated screen that makes shooting other than from eye level easier. Or to help viewing under bright sunlight.

Fail.

I'm with Leopold. I've been enjoying mine. While I wish it were smaller, I still find it easy to hold and shoot with, one handed even. I don't see how people consider any camera "uncomfortable" or "impossible to hold". Anyhooo....

I think it's perfectly matched to the DA Limited lenses.

I'm still keeping my K-5, though. The K-01 is just another tool in the chest.

Even bad photography can be fun :)

"With the buttons arranged over such a large camera area, we found key controls difficult to manipulate without large shifts in your hand position. While you can reach both the red and exposure compensation buttons with your hand in the shooting position, neither of them are particularly comfortable, as they are set so far to the rear of the camera plate."

yep...sooo not Pentax :-P

Early adopter here:

I'm not too keen on the capital-D Designer look, wish they had made the grip side of the body more grippy. Wish they had given us a folding screen as well.

That aside, it IS a serious photographic tool, if you want it to be. Amazing IQ. So many people are writing this camera off without actually "getting" it. Low price, well-built, big enough to support real lenses, world-class sensor, full complement of lenses.

Too bad the conventional wisdom is saying, "Ha-ha, ugly!" & "Mistake!" & "Too big!" Oh, well.

How good is the AF or focus peaking in lower light?

Thanks!

Hi,

DPR's preview and this thread continue to demonstrate that the K01 is a camera that will polarise views for as long as it is on the market (and probably longer.........)

People have commented about whether the K01 is a Hoya legacy product and whether Ricoh would have produced a different design ethos....... It's interesting that Ricoh have released (2 Feb 2012) their 16mpx APSC GR module with a 24-85 (equiv) lens at around the same time as Pentax is bringing the K01 to market. I don't know if it's the same Sony sensor as the K5/K01/D7000. It appears to be just reaching the market place now. If the zoom lens is good it might be a very worthy mirrorless APSC competitor to the K01 (if you want one kit lens and you're happy with that FL range). It looks very capable and offers both an optional EVF (much as I hate them) and reasonable ergonomics. And at least it doesn't look Fisher Price. Food for thought.

I've no idea whether Ricoh will actually produce the much discussed possible K-mount ILC module......... Now that Pentax are making the K01, you'd have to doubt whether they would go down the road of making competing products from the same stable.

Cheers Rod

I have seen that repeated many times here, but that claim probably goes to Fuji XPro1 (from the samples so far).

There are extensive Fuji XPro1 comparative shots against Can 5D2 and other cameras, and it seem to have the best IQ on APSC as of this date.

Honestly, I wouldn't hold your breath. I contacted Ricoh regarding something about Pentax and how they plan on approaching Pentax's past issues. They referred me to a line direct to Pentax, so I think they're going to be pretty hands off, at least for the time being until they sort things out.
