Hang in there Sandra. Lots of features -- that makes it fun! For me I didn't read the manual cause I'm a canon D30 shooter already -- just took a bit to find the zoom control and review feature. The histogram is nice -- eventually you'll learn enough to go into manual mode and RAW. This cam rocks for sure, just take it one step at a time and enjoy!!!

I'm in the same boat. I have just come from a little pathetic Sony P5 to the G3. Should be on my doorstep when I get home tonight.

I am planning on going full auto for the first few weeks, and slowly getting into the other functions working my way to full manual in RAW mode.

I know that many digital photographers go full manaul in the beginning without full knowledge of their actions and then blame their equipment.

My theory is that you can never learn too much, and you shoudl try to shoot in as many different situations as possible to test yourself and your equipment.

When I read Phil's review and then saw you had added the g3 to your arsenal, well it intrigued me soooo much for the price that I couldn't resist going into a rationale of why not give these as special one time gifts this year and teach some family members the hobby that I love and is dear to my heart and also "a tool in my minds eye that is exceptional for getting the shot". Sooo many features (Hmmm I can't count either )) ) the g3 is such a great tool and sooo00 easy to carry--the controls seem intuitive and right there at my fingers ready to deploy--I didn't even read the manual!

If she lets me borrow it as my compliment cam to the D30, and I'm hoping so on a money event shoot where she'll get some of the proceeds then as Phil and you said this will be a great compliment to the DSLR.

Now -- let's think of the DSLR we want in the future....for me, it would be powerful yet small...smaller DSLR glass needs to be in the future...I'm experiencing difficulty lugging around stuff, that is why I got the 28 - 135 IS lens so this will be my one -- everyday walkaround -- and only lug other stuff for special shots -- 20mm for landscapes, 70 - 200 for sports, and 50 mm for art.

But it will be interesting if I prefer the g3 to the D30 28 - 135 IS for the walk-around. My opinion right now is that I'd prefer the g3 because of its size and controls to get the shot....but this will be my wife's and I'll need to honor that -- unless she extenporaneously hands it over .. for everyday shoots. we'll see! ))

Soooooo, what is my dream DSLR? Lower price #1 -- so you do not have to worry about babysitting an expensive (3 -4 times) DSLR while on vacation. Low weight and size #2 ---sooooo you can get the ergonomics, ease in carrying and get the shots--likely will still need to exchange lenses on the DSLR's in the future so a g3 type will still be an extremely valuable all around compliment tool to get the shot.

Folks need to think about these "small" factors -- price and egonomics. Let me put it this way. If the athlete in my link below was not petite, she could not do what she does. And if I had a smaller more compact DSLR, with a g3 type cam as an adjunct, I could do soooooo much more....for sooooo much less!!!!!

I always respected the G-series, but I was never drawn to try one out until the G3. So for me, it's less about the series and more about this particular camera. This one is much more comfortable in the hands... for me, at least.

There's just something about the Canon "G" series that makes them
such nice cameras to own.

For myself, I like the controls, but have the problem of having "F717 memory retention"... my fingers for the first couple of weeks still wanted to to go to the places where the F717 buttons and controls and menu system would have been. It was pretty funny.

Hopefully one of these days I'll get used to turning the G3 on/off from its on/off switch before attempting to do so with the zoom lever, which is the location of my Nikon 4500 on/off switch. We are certainly creatures of habit.

Yep, salivating for sure, and the other cam is going to the couple who could make us grandfolks in a year or two-- so now we're thinking these cams will generate memories that will make us cry -- so you see we got multiple water leaks goin on here -- hehe!!

Well, our daughter is getting the King this xmas -- with accesories it was $1200 a few years back .. we've come a long way! Now I got to keep it going for her -- she's going to the UK after Christmas with boyfriend -- it is not the 11 days we worry about, it is the 10 nights!!! :-((

Hahaha....Nah, not after 26 yrs, this is to bring us closer together since she has felt left out of my digital experience..at least that is the party line I'm using today!

Smaller would be nice, if the camera companies could standardize on
glass. Otherwise, prices will stay high, and you'll never find the
lenses you want.

I also need lower prices. Because current prices are at $2000, I
decided to stick with a camera -- for now -- that has a sensor that

This was last summer when I really didn't know how to shoot the best way yet! I previously used AV mode and set f4 for inside in a decent lit place -- the auto ss was inconsistent 1/200 - 1/320 in av mode. Now I keep in mind to stop body motion...ideally you need 1/500 and ideally you need enough light ...and fast focus... so I now set to manual mode...I start with 1/500 and f2.8. I start with ISO 400. I check the histogram to see if I have enough light. Then I adjust...either ISO 800 or ss 1/400.....then I recheck the histogram. On the VBall shots, the best I could do with ISO 1600 and wide open on the f2.8 lens, and still was only able to achieve ss of 1/320 to get enough light to the sensor...when objects or people are in motion, the key is achieving enough light and focus and shutter speed...the D30 with 70 -200 f2.8 sigma lens has this many times, sometimes I've wished for the 200 f1.8 lens but that is astronomical in price. Where g3 will not keep up is in low noise and focus speed for burst shooting...but it shines at ISO 50 for still life where the shooter doesn't care much about shallow DOF -- the g3 adds a dimension I truly love, ergonomics to get the shot the D30 is too bulky to get and not onboard because of "not wanting to lug around" !

I've learned alot in a year, and I wouldn't trade that leaning, but if I had to do it over again knowing what I know today, I'd be moving from the 505v to the g3 and sitting and waiting for the DSLR in my minds eye--the g3 has that much to offer to keep me busy with the features that are rich and expansion capabilities. The D30 is still in my minds eye though, the low noise and ISO 1600 are awesome.

Ahhh... good times!

Everything was so new then. Every day in the forum was a different discovery and a problem to be solved. I think that's the difference between digital shooters from a few years ago versus the shooters of today, if you can generalize that way.

The newer shooters don't have quite the same history and learning curve behind them. We were learning all about photosite size, why white balance goes wrong, and helping companies create the cameras of today. Shooters these days just expect it all to work, without any real concern of how it got that way, why it's going wrong, and why it's really OKAY to try a work-around. )

the g3 has that much to offer to keep me busy with
the features that are rich and expansion capabilities.

This is pretty much where I'm at now. I have not come close to checking all of its potential, much less my own potential WITH this camera.

The sloppy thing about all of these cameras is that beyond a low ISO, you can only ask so much of them. I'd like to reach the higher sensitivities, but I'm not prepared to shell out the kind of bucks required just to get my feet wet. Meanwhile, I CAN get my feet wet with some other skills while using the G3.

I expect you and your wife will enjoy Alan! This cam has features for both. Looking forward to pics from the Hartmann G3, maybe take it on your trip you mentioned and see how it does against the 50 in low light, but the D30 really performs on the streets ISO 1600, so I expect we'll be shooting with the g3 mostly in day or with flash at ISO 50 -- some great low noise pix at this setting -- excellent color too -- right out of the cam! Keep us apprised what you think!

Good way to start with wives I think, also perhaps offering to do her processing is what I'm offering for my wife-- to show if she takes pictures, she'll get the best results she's ever seen from any camera she's ever used. She is leary, but wants to learn the computer also, we'll see how that goes..... by the way, breezebrowser for $35 rocks, I downloaded a week ago and registered and no problems with RAW conversions or JPG -- shows the EXIF nicely, lots of neat features -- highly recommended.
