Hoya didn't listen, maybe Ricoh/Pentax will.

Many of us really need/want a 400mm and/or 500mm Pentax lens. Quit pussyfooting around and make them for us.

I really beleive that even a 400mm f5.6 will sell well for many of us commited Pentax users.

Go! Go! Go! Go Ricoh!

Cheers.

Ron

I, for one, have high hopes that Ricoh will be more responsive to it's customers than was Hoya. Time will tell.

+1!

Well said Ron!

I'm looking for decent 400/5.6 for 2 years

+1, but I would go further. I would say that a 600 f4 is also needed. It would be expensive, but it would be a signal that Pentax intends to cater to the needs of any of its users. Pentax manufactured an autofocus 300mm 2.8, 400mm 5.6, 250-600mm 5.6, & the 600mm f4. The manufactured manual focus, auto aperture 400mm 2.8 and a 600 f5.6. Modernizing these designs and putting them back into production, even as limited editions, would go a long way towards rehabilitating Pentax's image among photographers. Like Brandrx, I believe that a modernized 400mm 5.6 would sell and sell well. A 600mm f4 and a 250-600mm 5.6 would give us more options than "buy a Canon or Nikon so you can use their 600mm f4s". Even Sigma only makes a 500 f4.5 for the K mount. Their 300-800mm 5.6 and 800mm 5.6 aren't even available to us. Sure, I couldn't afford any of those lenses (right now), but I would sure as hell save up for them if they were available.

... of having a new 400 or 500mm than to see a FF from Pentax I would say.

And for the same reasons:

1/ You already have a "400mm" (ie the DA*300 is the new "400" for APS-C)

2/ Low volume, expensive to make, expensive too buy item

and 3/ multicolored 500f4 might not be a hit with Japanese teenagers... ;-)

I don't care how you look at it, 300mm is not 400mm. :-)

Hi Ron,

I'll agree, but only with a condition. . .

Assuming the new long tele lens will be a DA* with in lens focusing motor using the DSM system, it must be a dual drive like the previous DA*s and it must allow switching between SDM and screw-drive for AF on the lens, or be preceded by a firmware update for all SDM capable bodies that allows this choice by the user via the menu.

Just out of interest here but which lenses support this "dual" system ie screw drive or in lens motor?

Thanks ;-0

Ron,

Your message is good, but like an old hound this is the wrong tree. I would gladly sign any letter and I think a letter with all our signatures possibly could end up on the right desk. I still want a 120-300mm F2.8

or any F/FA* super-teles in the past. Even today, DA*300/4 & DA*60-250/4 aren't hot sellers. IMHO, Pentax's existing system is full of issues which deter people from committing deeply. Besides, Canon & Nikon already have an array of excellent super-teles with high performance bodies to match right here right now. Why dream for something that Pentax will not be able to offer in the foreseeing future?

All of the DA* (star) lenses except the DA*55/1.4 has a dual drive system.
If used on a Pentax K10D before a certain firmware update, and all older models that do not support SDM then the lens will be screwdrive. If used on any SDM model then there is no way to get it to use screwdrive.

Why the hell dream for anything? Better to just give up on life? Screw that my friend. I will always dream. :-)

Such projects were put on hold while Hoya took control of Pentax, then to make Pentax look like it was worth more many R&D projects were kept on hold so it didn't look like Pentax was sinking money into a black hole. During the last year Ricoh has been working on acquiring Pentax and during that time R&D projects get again put on hold... perhaps this next year will be a big one as the unstable nature of ownership ends and R&D can begin again.

Is a DA*200-500 possible with a screw/SDM drive switch?

I agree with Ron. I want a "new 600" AKA a 400.
