G3 new wide/tele lens OK for G1/G2??!
(Reposting the following with a shorter 'subject'.)

Please help if you know (or tried it) for sure...
G3 new wide/tele lens accessories on G1/G2 work fine, right?

I realize that the lense adapter for the G3 is the newer bayonet type, and the older G2/G1 is screw thread mounted. However, seeing that many of the digital camera review websites are testing G1/G2 58mm wide/tele lens accessories on the G3, this means the optics are fine in both directions, right?

I inquired with Canon, but they wouldn't give me a straight answer.

They merely responded (twice) that the lenses were designed specifically for the G3 and NOT compatible with either G1/G2. (baffled, they just want me to buy the new camera or are they playing dumb?)

I'm interested in the new 58mm based G3 wider 0.7x and longer tele 1.5x lenses for my older G1. Of course I do not need the G3 adapter because these lenses have 58mm threads, and I'm mounting these on my G1 58mm thread adapter.

I already have both the older G1 wide and tele converters (Canon), and am not satisfied. I'm used to using 24mm lenses on my other Canon 35mm cameras (T-90;AE-1,etc).

Can anyone confirm for me that the optics of those NEW lenses are fine for my G1 (or G2)?

Thanks.

I asked both Canon USA and Canon Canada if the new G3 WA lens would work properly with the G2 and was told yes. But you can bet your a** that I'll be checking it out at a dealer before I buy!

If you were talking to the average salesperson they weren't playing they ARE!

Thanks.

I've tried SONY 58mm threaded lenses (for videocams), but they had too much distortion, fortunately returns were easy without questions.
(it was huge and cumbersome!)

I'll try testing my G1 when these things are available, before deciding on any purchase.

(will Canon ever come out with compact dc with an equivalent 24mm built -in?! ... nikon has their 28mm coolpix); my preference is still with the Canon.

If your a user that has a particular affinity for a manufactures camera you might find that your compromising on the options that are available to you. Has anyone that has a preference for a camera with wide lenses checked out the abilities of the Nikon 5000? It has some drawbacks granted; battery life, non-intuitive menu structure (if you dont read the manual), slower lens. But it offers a 19mm wide lens, the widest I've seen on any digicam to date and if your anything like me you'll just love it. I take a fair number of pictures of architectural structures and the image quality and ability afforded me by the wide lense is unparalleled. It's the right tool for this specific task, even without the wide lense attachment its capable of 28mm. For the record, I'm not a Nikon nut or anything, in fact I own cameras from Canon, Olympus and Nikon and Minolta, both digital and film, just offering insight into alternatives.

What are these lenses anyway?

What is the focal length of the tele converter? Does it give more that the 1,5x of the G2 converter (2.0X?)
What is the resulting focal length of the wide angle converter? less than 0.75x?

My target was 24mm, which I like a lot when travelling, it is good in tight spots without the extreme distortion on subjects (mostly non-architecturals) that anything below 20mm produces.

I finally got the new Canon 0.7x last Sunday (I'm on a trip overseas on the coming Saturday); and I tested the optics, which are good enought for my needs... my G1 is now down to the 23.8mm or '24mm' wide range I want.

This is why the 28mm of the new Nikon would not meet my needs, besides already having the Canon G1 for quite awhile meant an new camera was unnecessary just to get wide angle, a wide lens was more affordable.

Here is a summary of both the new and older set of wide or tele lenses fitting the G1/G2/G3:

regarding the new wide angle converter for G3 is .7x and the teleconverter for G3 is 1.75x? Everywhere I've read, the factors are .8x and 1.5x for G3 new converters. Also, the wide end of the G3 is 35mm NOT 34mm.

Please advise. thank. btw, how do you like your new .7x converter on the G3?

G3 new wide/tele lens OK for G1/G2??!
(Reposting the following with a shorter 'subject'.)

G3 new wide/tele lens accessories on G1/G2 work fine, right?

I realize that the lense adapter for the G3 is the newer bayonet
type, and the older G2/G1 is screw thread mounted. However, seeing
that many of the digital camera review websites are testing G1/G2
58mm wide/tele lens accessories on the G3, this means the optics
are fine in both directions, right?

I inquired with Canon, but they wouldn't give me a straight answer.

They merely responded (twice) that the lenses were designed
specifically for the G3 and NOT compatible with either G1/G2.
(baffled, they just want me to buy the new camera or are they
playing dumb?)

I'm interested in the new 58mm based G3 wider 0.7x and longer tele
1.5x lenses for my older G1. Of course I do not need the G3 adapter
because these lenses have 58mm threads, and I'm mounting these on
my G1 58mm thread adapter.

I already have both the older G1 wide and tele converters (Canon),
and am not satisfied. I'm used to using 24mm lenses on my other
Canon 35mm cameras (T-90;AE-1,etc).

Can anyone confirm for me that the optics of those NEW lenses are
fine for my G1 (or G2)?

Thanks.

funny you should ask, but I didn't get the tele-converter, only the wide-converter for my G1.

Ironically, Canon categorically said no for both, on their use on either G1 or G2. Maybe they were just PR folks responding, and not the Canon techies that I pleaded for to respond.

The only clue i had that they were interchangeable was that all the webtesters were using the older G1/G2 tele-wide lenses on their test G3!
