S95 or S100 ?

What ever you do, don't call it a S100 as there are those here that take everything literally. :-)
Want a camera to have with all the time (main camera Sony a100). I like the S95,I do not need video but a +. Not in a hurry to buy,Just would like the groups view on wait for new S100 or buy now.
Take a look at the recent models that were released to get an idea of features likely to be added. Canon Rumors had this entry:

Whatever you do, don't assume anything posted on Canonrumors.com is real. And ignore those people actually dumb enough to believe what they read over there.

There is no reliable rumor or confirmation through official channels that the s95 is to be replaced at this time. It may very well be, but there's no hint at all that it will be.

Yep...

There is a good chance that because the Canon S95 is selling so well the next model will likely not change too much and may be delayed and not come out until next year. Fun to speculate, but nothing that we can take literally yet.

Still, I would wait until Sept to see.....but keep in mind that there is the remote possibility that Canon could screw up the next version and the S90/95 could become hard to get.

Why ignore Canonrumors? If they have been right with information on the S90 before it was released, along with the S95, why would the S95 successor be any different?

No, but...

The S95 was announced in August 2010
The S90 was announced in August 2009

The S90 and S95 have the same sensor, so it's time for an update.

Based on that, I think it's highly likely that S-Next will be announced August-September of this year.

I believe that there will be an S-Next announcement August-September.

That said Canonrumors don't always get the details right. According to Canonorumors (August 12, 2010), the G12/S95 have CMOS sensors. Ooops. I guess that's why they are called rumors. :-)

The S95's sensor is similar but not the same as the S90:

Canon announcement:

"Canon has launched the PowerShot S95 premium compact as successor to the S90. The latest model includes an upgraded sensor capable of 720p HD video recording and the company's 'Hybrid IS' system that compensates for more types of movement."

Well don't forget about Japan's problems caused by the earthquake and tsunami, they are still having blackouts from what I understand.

Just try getting certain parts for a Honda or Toyota and you will understand.

They have a handy rating scale, simplified here for the idiots:
0. Joke
1. Rumor
2. Rumor
3. Fact

The last 'fact' they had was in December 2010. They call themselves a rumor site, & label the rumors as rumors. I don't think anyone's taking it as gospel !

if the s100' is coming out this year then it will probably be as incremental an upgrade as the s95 was to the s90, though i have read that it will be longer on the telephoto end.

by the way, new product speculation is 51% of the fun of forums like this.

+1 :-)

However, I would imagine at this point Canon is likely to change more about the S100 than they did going from the S90 to S95.

They should call it the S150. That gives them a few more updates and does not interfere with the SX line. I can't see them calling it the S100. But you never know. Maybe they can call it the 100S. ?

:)

Whether they actually end up calling the S100 or something else it is irrelevant. The S100 is no longer made so anyone that knows anything about Canon cameras knows when we refer to the S95 successor as the S100, it is for obvious reasons.

Stayed tuned......

Don't be surprised if there's not a replacement for the S95.

The S95 is a very good compact but its claim to fame is it's size. Any "improvements" could increase the size and this is the last thing Canon wants.

The only change I can see Canon making would be to replace the sensor with something that may or may not have been invented yet.

The S95 is still the only pocket sized full featured compact. No other company has anything close to it in size and quality.

There's currently no good reason for Canon to replace it.

If a person wants the very best in a pocket size camera, the S95 is the only choice.

If I ran Canon (fat chance) I wouldn't touch the S95. I'd put my efforts towards improving the "G" series because that's where the competition is and that's where I could be hurt.

Well, wishful thinking LOL :-)

They are not going to turn it into the G series, but a faster lens or wide angle/more zoom is highly likely.
