Challenge #7 - CHAT - Motion

Sheila:

You're most welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed them. He was truly one of the great minds of his time and it was an honor to not only meet him, but work for his company.

Yes, the Drop of Milk was probably his most famous shot. Interestingly, he had numerous shots of this that were quite mediocre in comparison...just like all of us, he kept at it until he got exactly what he wanted!!

Frank
Thanks for posting these shots which Doctor Harold Edgarton took
Frank. I had an interesting time looking him up on the 'net
afterwards. I do love the drop of milk photo.
Anyhow it looks as if you inspired Doug with his challenge entry!!

You get an A+ for effort there buddy, regardless if you win or not,
lol. What a great shot, guess you've been looking at the Doc
Edgerton photos I've been posting :)
Frank;

Thanks for the kid words... Actually I first saw the photo and got imspired from a physic's book that my son uses in grade 11. then I saw the same photo when you posted it.

I just thought... okay that was done with film... can it be done with the 5700. I can tell you that the shutter lag makes things quite a bit more interesting.
But it was fun and at least I'm still learning.

It's a jar of frozen spaghetti sauce I made, sealed and under running water from the faucet to help thaw it out enought to get it out of the jar.

This was for challenege 6

But as we saw there were some that used artificial lighting that even got votes! I know we bent the rules to allow certain people to submit, just find it funny the sometime serious approach and other times it is free and easy.

Just an observation, I am all for making it easy for people to take part, so maybe a note for the to be announced winner of this challenge to take care when picking a theme and the guidelines. I am sure some folks felt a little confused by this, it is hard to read all the posts to find out if something changed etc.

SPECIAL RULES

The following RULES apply for this challenge:
:
1. No Artificial Lighting

Looks like I was late ! Waited till the last minute as usual, then discovered I had lost my cookie to pbase AND forgotten my password ! Had to wait on e-mail-- Oh, well, I await the decision of the judges.

I agree with this special rules statement. The correlary of 1. below is that the only appropriate light is sunlight (or moonlight - which is a reflection of sunlight). Everything else falls under the category of artificial lighting.

It would seem reasonable to disqualify those that use expensive studio setups that can cost in the hundreds or thousands of dollars, but the line is fuzzy. What do we say about freeway lights? Lights in a skating rink? Lights from the tail of a car? A Table lamp in someone's home? I should probably be disqualified for using a flashlight - however, a cheap flash light is hardly a prohibitively expensive accessory and others could easily adapt.

I'm not sure that I have any suggestions to solve this problem other than to get rid of this rule.

Other suggestions?

Brent

Paul:

I am not a judge, but I did work with Sid, Michael and Doug on rewriting the rules. There will be a small change starting with the new Challenge, but one thing we agreed on for all Challenges was the closing time. The "Official Closing Time" is stated at 7:00 PM CST. However, the actual closing is when one of the Officials actually posts "Challenge Closed" in the thread. That has not happend yet, so my guess is, your submission counts...

Brent, I think that was a special rule for the Faces of the World challenge wasn't it?
It doesn't apply to the Motion challenge. At least that's the way I read it.
