Hi,

Its a while since I have been in the forum.
Can I get some honest opinion on this smudge please.

I am quite pleased with it, but sometimes it is difficult to be too critical over something after many hours of work.
I'm looking for an outside honest eye, positive and negative criticism welcomed.

Many thanks;
Pete.

I really like the smudging. My only c&c would be that when the image is blown up 100%, the texture is overpowering to me. I would cut it back down so you can more easily see your brush strokes

I think the smudge is done very well. The only criticism I have is that I would like to see a little more contrast between the dogs and BG. They seem to blend too well with it.
But then I see with old tired eyes.

Thank you very much to everyone who has taken the time to comment.

I was unsure about the canvas texture on the background and I have the picture saved with and without it, but just couldn't decide. It would seem from the comments that it is a personal thing that some like more than others.

I also take on board the choice of colour of the background, there would be more contrast possibly if I had chosen a different colour? (This is ironic as the background started off blue and sharp so I swirled it a bit, blurred it a bit and then coloured it using the colourisation tool in hue/saturation). A different colour might have done the trick.

Thanks again to al for your comments.
Pete.

You asked. Don't like dogs and don't like smudges. Need I say more?

I like it - have never done it, wouldn't even know where to start, but the result seems to be worth the trouble to learn it....

It wasn't me, it was the dog - really!

It's pretty good but agree with another poster the texture canvas is far too much it's takes over the smudging itself trimoon canvas texture works nicely too but any texture is ok as long as you tone them down a bit the painting is about smudging and not the canvas texture.

my humble opinion.

Pete - I REALLY like how your background color and tonality work with the dogs. As for the smudge it seems the brush strokes are a bit soft and broad and lack the pointy feel of a camel hair brush so to speak, (comparing to "fur" images I saw on a visit to Scott D's gallery a couple days ago) but given that comment it has a overall OK feel and I LIKE IT! A smoother style of smudging. One small distraction that bothered me a bit is that there is no room between the frame and the tall dog's head. Minor and with a positive slant put on that it helps to give the tall dog a extra feeling of prominence or dominance. GOOD WORK! Hope you ill show us more.

If the image was printed large, it would look like canvas. So for the net it just looks overdone..
Smudging animals is a tough one...
Check Scott Deardorf site to give an idea at how much
Keep up the good work. Takes alot of time..
Oh Jules, just likes to stir up aggrivation..lol Ingore him...

Mark,
Thank you for taking the time to put your thoughts down for me.

I take the point of the brush strokes being soft and will try to remedy that on my next one. I also have already realised my cropping fault on the head of the bigger dog and have since redone the background to give more space between his head and the top of the crop.
Thank you also for the encouragement it is most welcomed.
Pete

Hi Gale, thanks for your comments I think blown up, the texture is not as bad, it has to be equal proportions as well I found, ie if you look at it a 33% of the normal size it looks awful but at 25% or 50% it is better.

I have looked at Scott's work and he was my inspiration to start trying to smudge in the first place.

I also see your point on Jules - that is not constructive criticism it is a very poor shot at humour that was not even funny! a waste of electronic ink as they say!
Pete.

That's not constructive criticism it is just stupid.
With regards to your "need I say more" comment; No I hope not!

Thank you, I think the general consensus here is that the texture is too much - next one will have a very light or no texture.
Pete
