With cameras with version 1.3 installed but hack works if 1.2 installed.
Theres along thread about this on dvxuser "Cannot update GH1 firmware"

I think what he means is that Panasonic is coming out with new GH1s with firmware v1.3 already installed. And for these new cameras the hack doesn't work.

I was going to buy a GH1 with the intention of doing this, but now I don't know. I want to make sure that the hack will still work with the new GH1s.
Take a look at this glowing review of the hack in Lum. Landscape:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/GH1-hack.shtml

It specifically states to update to v1.32 firmware before installing the hack, but to save the hack file as a number higher - 1.33 - or it won't work. And to add to the hack, 1.34, etc.

This hack has done more to boost the reputation of the GH1 than Panasonic could dream of... locking the cameras is dumb dumb dumb. :x
Yes, agreed. However, a company that that thinks that they have to lock down the batteries and that won't affect sales isn't going to get it. Canon actually "gets" that the hack for their cameras actually sells cameras but maybe Panasonic doesn't

... it kinda makes sense. Reputation is worth way more than the potential on a bit of lost revenue due to people not buying GH1s to use them hacked (how large is that market anyway?). The last thing a company like Panasonic would want is some very vocal people crying about broken cameras in spite of it being user fault.

My guess is this means GH2 improvements aren't going to involve hardware that much. I hope I'm wrong

You can, but to install firmware updates the camera has to boot. If something goes wrong with the firmware update, or there's a problem with the hacked firmware that prevents it booting, you're stuck.

From having played with the firmware hack I think a lot of the limitations Panasonic placed on the GH1 are to do with encoder hardware limitations (recording in 1080p often makes the encoder crash) and making sure people can use their crappy class 4 SD cards without having the video stop due to the write buffer filling (would be nice to have the option to use more bandwidth on fast cards!).

I agree. This camera was developed by their consumer division, not the professional division. But anyone sufficiently interested in using the hack is almost by definition savvy enough to know:
  • low data rate cards mightn't work
  • they're at risk of voiding their warranty
  • the hack is experimental
By doing this, Panasonic are driving away a high value market segment (semi-pros/ pros and prominent bloggers who help cement its high quality reputation) and damage the GH brand in the process.

I hope the extra sales they think they'll make from the GH2 make this all worthwhile

Have you tried it? because to say the difference is night and day is an underestimate of huge magnitude ;-)

We have both tried it, don't tell me about the difference your going to make a grown man weep!

Sealing the batteries in the phone, pushing firmware updates that kill unlocks and hacks... Panny is being criticized, but people keep buying their iPhones...

If the GH2 turns out to be just a ober hacked GH1 its not gonna sell!

If its sensor is not better than the GH1 (ISO & or res) and it does not include electronic shutter why bother? - thoes 2 things will make me get 2! anything less and its just more of the same and not that much compaired to canons 7D or the original GH1 hacked!

Any news on a date, or if these things will be on the GH2? - cant find much on 4/3 roumor?

No word on it yet but one thing is almost certain: the touchscreen LCD from the G2.

Where did you buy your camera from?
Can you please inform if you have updated another older unit of the camera?

I am not doubting what you said, but just to make sure that you are following the correct procedures to update. Many updates failed because of this. However the version 1.34 means only one thing: it is a Panasonic factory install intended to spoil the hack or a hacked version to change language etc. (hence the first question).

If you have previously hacked a GH1, then it confirms what we fear.
