Poster of DSC-717

Canon propaganda, designed to derail us from the fact that this is really what the G3 design is going to look like. Watch for it at Photokina!! :o)
I'm excited to see specs like this. Waiting for the replacement
for the 707 appears it might be worth it.

However, this poster is a bit odd in another area too. How come it
does not mention the company, SONY?

hmmm...

Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!©

Have I missed something during the last few weeks? Where does this picture come from Ulysses? (the camera I mean).

Regarding the poster, if not a fake, I don't really see what all the fuss is about - in my view all the "improvements" are very small steps, and not necessarily in the right directions. I'd rather see a new lens, bigger MS, and larger and better CCD. IF genuine, this won't have me rushing out with my credit card (although If I were thinking of buying a 707 now I would hold off for a while to see what emerges in the next few months).

But tell me about this camera picture...

David -

Hate to be the one to tell ya, but you've missed a LOT. :-)

If you don't get the direction that things are headed through these little improvements, then don't worry about it.

But if you're excited by the following:

ISO 800, 1/2000s shutter speed, improvements to zoom control, better noise reduction, real hot shoe, possible histogram, numerous other usability improvements to be expected...

... then you need to just do a search in the forum on the words "F717 Sony".

That will pull up plenty.

Just remember, changes come gradually. And it doesn't require a new lens to make for important improvements.

I haven't read this yet, but I wanted to IMMEDIATELY give my thanks
out to both jilee and to curtner for helping us out here.
Invaluable information you've provided here.

Me too. Thanks.

Don't get me wrong - I've read lots of rumour and speculation as I drifted in and out between various trips away this summer, but (call me cynical if you will) very little of it excites me. It reminds me of the discussions in the Fuji forum a few months ago when the replacement for the 6900z was eagerly anticipated, except that they really needed an improvement because of the poor battery performance, one thing we can't really complain about with the 707! If I had owned a 6900z at the time, I think I would still be using it now. If the 717 turns out to be as predicted here, I will not be heading out for the shops this time around either.

I agree that improvements sometimes come gradually, but you only have to look back a couple of years to see how far things CAN come in a short space of time. This year, Sony seem to be consolidating. Maybe in 12 months time an entirely new camera (909?) will entice me out to spend some cash.

(Where did you get that picture though?)

If the rumours are correct, the lens will stay the same, as far as I know. I would like to see a wider range of zoom next time I buy a camera too - maybe 8 or 10X

we'll all have to wait until FALL 2003 for a real successor or possibly a DSLR. I just cant see Sony sittng on their hands and not utilizing their 6MP CCD themselves rather than just allowing Nikon to use in their D100.

The chinese poster is saying:
will be introduced to market in Sep.
USB 2.0
ISO 800 1/2000sec shutter
Long time MPEG HQX
1.4 sec startup time
6 selectable AF points.
added Simplified Chinese menu

The photo looks to be real, but of course the poster can be easily
faked.
Personally I believe it to be true.
All the updates seems logical and 707 is old enough to need such an
update.

The tradeoff for this will necessarily be less sharpness.
Hi Bernie,

That's a perfectly good point. Maybe I should resume my old argument in favour of interchangeable prime lenses, with a long-term policy of building up a good collection of glass while changing the body to keep pace with the (necessarily) faster developments in that area. In fact, maybe I should just save up for a DSLR.

Hahahahahah!!

No disrespect at all to curtner and jilee, but I doubt that Phil has learned anything new. That guy is almost ALWAYS ahead of the curve when news is so soon around the corner.
I want to add my "thank you" to curtner and jilee too.

Also, I am sure Phil Askey is thrilled too!

Keep in mind that what Sony Semiconductor MAKES really has very little to do with what Sony Electronics and Sony Digital Imaging actually use. They buy their stuff from Sony Semi, just like anyone else (well, not just like anyone else, but you know what I mean).

I honestly don't see them ever using that chip. It's just not their market. And they're not going to use it just because they have it and somehow need to protect their reputation. Their reputation has always been staked on the larger middle section of the bell curve, not on the fringes of it.

As long as they can do well and progressively in that section of camera that I'm most likely to purchase, then I'm happy (I don't expect to make a $2000 camera purchase anytime soon. Well, maybe not...).

How about a flash? Will Sony come out with a flash system that will
work? I sold my 707 just for this reason. Did Sony also listen to
everybody and put in a saturation control?

The purported photos of the 717 seem to show a real hot-shoe to replace the dummy that has been so widely criticised on the 707. We have to assume that it will work...

Hey there, Steve.

Right now, all we know is that the camera HAS a hot shoe. But the consensus at this point seems to be that it may not allow advanced functions of the advanced flash units.

And as for how the camera will really operate in flash situations, it's really anyone's guess at this point. I've been trying to solicit some comments from CD400 users to let us know what's going on here, but so far no comments have been made on this.

For what it's worth, see my thread at:
