Any difference between D3 and D700?

Hi Jeff...

I have tested both cams.

And the D3 AF is a little faster and more accurate. That reports also some friends of mine that own both cams.

I wonder if that is an example of good English or an example of good thinking.
I think the ears are part of the legs.

By the way: Some people can think even though their English is not excellent :-)

Take it easy :-)

You can still get 100s and hundreds of shots on a 16 GB card, and then you change it for another. Is this such a big deal. I don't really think it is an issue. you would have argued the same thing years ago when we only had one Gig cards.
Jules
Seems to me a studio environment is per definition a place where
shots can be repeated indefinitely in case of a CF card failure...
Now try that in sports , weddings, journalism...

It's true that CF card can survive unbelievable environment.

Also, it can die just by itself, for no reason - losing hours of work and thousands dollars of invested money in setup and models.

Hard Drives on computers are more reliable than Flash memories, but people put them in RAID so you have two copies of everything. I'm in computer business for almost two decades, and I don't trust any memory device, believe me, I have strong arguments. The only solution is to have your data twice (at least).

Are you serious?? People use RAID because HDs are LESS reliable. I too have been in the computer business a long time (since 1981). The only thing in this statement that I do agree with is backup early and often as anything can and will fail.

I guess it all depends on how you're measuring reliability. HDs are used heavily, day in and day out, and don't fail often. A HD will have a gazillion IOs per year performed on it, while a CF card might have at most a few hundred thousand in its lifetime. It becomes a bit like arguing about how many IOs can dance on the head of a pin. Bottom line, as you say, is that anything can and does fail.

FWIW, I was tempted by the second slot, but decided that for my low-volume amateur use, it wasn't justified. If there were an "option" for a second slot at a cost of a couple hundred dollars, I might have chosen it. If I were a wedding photographer or someone who really does not want to tell the client that they didn't do everything humanly possible to protect the photos, I would get a D3.

--I bought my D3 when the D700 was not yet available.

Can I keep my D3 now despite the fact that I learned that the D700 is a better choice? :-)

Independent from possibly positive incoming anwers I can already feel severe guilt creeping up by back :-)

Perhaps I place a D700 sticker over my D3 label in case I get detected while strolling the streets at night.

No probs Claude. I married a foreign speaking person and whilst she has mastered English, and my kids speak her (and their) language (Norwegian), I haven't mastered it yet.
Jules
You are quite right Claude, I thought he was an American!

Jules,

No problem. I'm a bit touchy about the matter, as I came to the US
at the age of 7, not speaking a word of English. The first year was
rough for me, as everyone seemed to think that I was stupid, or
perhaps hard of hearing (why is it that people think that if they
yell something in a language you don't understand, you will magically
understand?).

Anyway, that's why I jumped in. Owning only a D700 and not a D3, I
had nothing more germane to offer.

Yup I can take photos and be bitingly cruel. What's you forte, not journalism I see. Lol. Read my later posts before you reply, I'm not all bad...I hope.
Jules
What I always wonder is how some people are so pedantic and petulant.
Can these people actually take any photos? Maybe the phrase "get a
life" fits them to a tee.

Don't do it! Competent thieves won't steal your D3 anymore, they look for D700s nowadays, which sell far better to the experts plus on the getaway D700s are so small and lightweight, they can escape much faster. And it's more secure to walk the bronx at night with an unattractive cam no one cares for. Confess to your D3. :-)

Kind regards,
Bernd

Jules,

Your subsequent posts show you to be "not all bad." Perhaps a bit quick on the Reply button, but since I exhibited that very same tendency on this very same thread, it keeps me from making too big a fuss over it. Pot calling the kettle and all that.
