I just purchased a D100 I love the camera. But need some help with lense purchase. About 50% of my shooting will be taking soccer action shots. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding which lense and what the pros and cons are of each would love to hear some options

Thanks
Lou

Hi Lou,

I used a S1 extensively for a while, sold it couple of months ago and will be purchasing a S2 soon, but in the interim, I picked up an used E10 for $500 and extremely happy with it for my applications! I have owned and used more than 6 Nikon zooms but recently got rid of all of them sincer I bought the new Tamson 24-135 SP, this lens is probably the best all around zoom I have ever owned! I'm not alone on this, go check out user reviews from photogrphyreview.com. Good luck! BTW: This question should be posted elsewhere, both Fuji and Nikon forums has lots of discussion on lens.

Is this a new attempt at reviving the "Anyone thinking of....." thread or just an honest mistake?

Probably drives his mommy and daddy mad with 'that's not in the right place' tantrums.

It is a form of Compulsive Obsessive Disorder. There is treatment for it which his parents should seek for him before he grows into one of those really annoying little adults who can only think in staright lines. Now that wouild be truly terrible! Imagine someone like that on a forum such as this. Too much!

And you're ALWAYS there to add fuel to any discord whenever it smolders. That seems like a Compulsive Obsessive Disorder. Maybe that's what LCD means... Loves Conflict Disorder. ;-)

When he drops the stalking of anyone (even an obvious error as in this case) who talks of anything but E10/20, then I will stop challenging him on his odious quest. Thus, you, like he, have the problem back-to-front.

You 'standing up' for your lover here? Can't he speak for himself? See above reply.

Get well soon - both of you.

LCD

Brian, no apologies needed, and thankyou.

Actually, yes, I am old enough to drive. That still does'nt take away from the rather frightening fact that they actually dare to give me a license.
:-O

I really don't know what LCD's problem is. I was only joking myself as well. I have however adopted an ignore-all policy towards his posts. I've found it's really the best way to deal with such trolls.
Take care,
D.

Lou,

I cannot comment on the lens options for the D100 but I can comment relative to the Olympus E-10 & TCON 300. Following is the link to my first attempt last weekend with the combination. The shots were taken hand held during 4 games (2 at 8am and 2 at 10am in Montgomery, Alabama). It was full sun coming from my back for most shots. The teams are Premier U13 girls being evaluated for the Premier or Classic bracket.

I selected the E-10 knowing its limitations for sports photography, primarily shutter speed (1/640). I have taken many rolls from the U6 bracket through U13 and just recently switched to digital. The comments are relative to the recent shots and older kids. I am assuming the images more are for personal use at recreational fields rather than professional or at stadiums. You can email me off line for additional comments.

1. With the TCON 300 I have a fixed 420mm (140mm on camera * 3x with the TCON 300) which pulls in the back side of the field but when the play comes up close I realized I missed my zoom. I overcame this by removing the connecting screw on the arm-bracket. This let me take off the TCON 300 when the play came close up. Essentially switching b/t a 420mm & 140mm (maximum zoom on the E-10). Consider this when evaluating your camera/lens combination.

2. Most shots were taken at 1/640 & F5.6 which under exposed most of the images. Especially for the 8am games. I was able to correct approximately 1 stop with an editor but several are still slightly underexposed. F4.0 should be a good compromize. Consider lens speed.

3. Remember that you can crop later. Most, if not all, of the images on the link were cropped. Get a good shot then crop to a better image. Initially I though I needed to add a 2x on the 300 but after cropping to the final image I do not believe it is necessary.

4. 420mm pulls in significantly more action on the back side of the field than a 300mm. I shot many rolls with a film 300mm before switching to digital but was never satisfied. Maybe a 300mm digital and cropping would be acceptable. Something to consider / try.

5. I considered a monopod but after the weekend I believe I would have missed many of the shots with one. I can hold the heavy camera/lens combination but my arm was sore after the 4 games. I am curious if one would have improved the quality of the image. Most shots were taket @ 1/640.

Experiences from my first weekend and 200 shots. Best of luck.

stalking... odius quest...(Surely, thou dost jest?) problem back-to-front... Egad, that describes you to a "T"! ROTFLMAO -In Technicolor with 5.1 channel Dolby Surround!

Oh well, pep up, the nice thing about paranoia is that in your case you've nothing to worry about... people actually are out to get you. :-)

This is where the Olympus c-2100uz really shines, with its sharp and fast 10x optical lens (380mm), its build in Image-stablizer and that the entire camera weight only 19oz, these kind of applications become really easy and fun! If you need more range, the superb Olympus B300 will add another 1.7x, that's 646mm not counting the available 2.7x digital zoom. I have shot sports, birds...etc with much much better results using the UZ than my previous S1 Pro with the heavy the 80-200/f.8 lens and teleconverter!
