Which macro lens for the S2

Which Nikon macro lens would be best for the S2 -- the 60mm, the 105mm, other? I have used the macro with the 28-105mm (which I no longer own), and you had to be very, very close to the object that was being photographed. Do the ones mentioned above, or another give more breathing room between the photographer and subject and allow for flash fill-in? I'd like to hear your comments. Thanks

I have the 105 mm and love it. With the digital multiplier, you get the equivalent crop of a 150 mm so you have loads of working space between you and your subject.

Thank you for your comments. What is the distance (ft? inches?) between subect and camera in the 60mm vs. the 105mm?

I haven't measured this exactly but when focuseing at 1:1, the working distance of the 105mm would be somewhere around 4 inches. I don't have the 60mm but I think it's working distance could be a little less than 2 inches. After all, these figures are totally unscientific.

Hello,

The lens you are talking about is this Nikon 3,5/4,5 28-105???

Theo

Theo,

yes, I was referring to the Nikon 3.5/4.5 28-105. I am now using the 24-120mm lens which is much sharper at each focal point, but does not have micro ability.

GMD, nice photo. I guess 4 inches away allows enough light to enter. Did you use any fill flash?

Taken with a really cheap 105mm macro with matched multiplier. Strobe lighting at f16

Hi grc,

Great macro indeed. What 105mm lens did you use ?

I ordered the Sigma 105mm EX F2,8 1:1 macro lens. Everyone seems to talk good about it so I guess it's good..

Cheers
Jens

The minimum focusing distance on 105 is 12 inches; 60 is 8.25 inches; and if you get 200/4, you can back up to a whopping 19.4 inches. If your 105mm is 4 inches away, you are not focusing on the right thing. You can focus closer for greater than 1:1 with extension tubes.

Charles- So I'm sitting here, way past my bedtime, reading this post, when along comes this little fella, (moth) and lands on my laptop. I had my S2 with a nikon 60mm macro on the table, so I figured, this must be a sign. Here's the bugger, safely released after he let me capture him. P.S. I also have the nikon 105 macro. They're both excellent. The 60 has the advantage of being a fine portrait lens at it's 90mm FOA, the 105 I use only as a macro. Here's the moth.... http://www.pbase.com/image/3841117 :> ) ...Peter

Verrrry sharp lens, the sharpest I have. Almost too sharp for a portrait lens - you can virtually see every pore in the skin :-)

I have heard that the Nikor 60 is less sharp once you focus beyond about 10 feet - perhaps an owner can comment? The Tamron 90 stays sharp for distance telephoto as well.

Hi Jens,

A Cosina 105mm with a multiplier. £119 in the UK but I believe the Vivitar 105mm is the same lens and that is £99.

All my other lenses are Nikon glass but I found this thing very good for the price..

Regards

Optical formulas will tell you that if the lens is twice as long, the distance you would be working at to get the same size images is also twice as far. Telephoto designs are often not exactly that way but it is good enough for a rough comparison. The largest problem is to find a good compromise between working distance and sufficient depth of field. The longer the lens the less depth of field. I own the new 60 mm Micro Nikkor and it is great for table top shots but too far for may small insect shots. Take your pick. You will ultimately get two lenses because it is hard to do it all with just one.
