Cannot get rid of dust specks - tried canned air, pump air and a whole box of censor swabs. It's drove me crazy for 2 days. Got a wedding to shoot tomorrow and will have to use good old film. Had all these problems with the S1 but never a problem with the D60 - Fuji - it's not good enough !

Hi Garry,

Are you the one who said that the dust appears when you use small aperture ? If this is the case, the dust is on your lens. Maybe inside it. I got the same freaking problem as you. I never claened my CCD. I cleaned my lens 3-4 times and finally it went away. I never found why but I repeat, I never cleaned my CCD !

Maybe it is inside the lens ?

Regards,

David

Another troll. Why would you go from an S1, to a D60, to an
S2, then back to Canon?

I agree, but don't get it???

I own Nikon and Fuji DSLRs, but what would make me want to troll to a Canon forum?

Don't people get it? Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Kodak, Olympus... they all sell GOOD cameras aimed at different markets.

Posts like this make it hard to get the good information this site is best known for having...

No, I am not a troll and who said anything about going back to Canon ? If you read msome of my posts on these forums you will see I am a respected member and have had all three camera's besides many more and can post images from any of them. I personally think the S2 is a better camera than the D60 but I gave aproblem with dust. So think before you come out with stupid comments or dont say anything at all !

I have not had any dust problems at all with the Fuji S2. I've had the camera a few days. Images look wonderful as long as exposure is dead on.

What's this, Justin?!

Just because our friend changed cameras over time, does THAT make him a Troll????

Does he need YOUR (or anyone's, for that matter) permission to do so?

Or is it just envy on your part.....?

Grow up & get a life....... or get out.

Hey Joe, someone posted a message that he was unhappy with his
Olympus, and you said :

Hey Joe, whats this? Just because our friend states his opinion about
a camera, he is a troll? LOL! Hey Pot, this is kettle, you're black!

Who is Joe Schome, Justin? Quoting anybody out of context - & out of that thread will get you nowhere. Can you clarify?

The dust appears sharper the smaller the aperture. I would expect this to be the lens, but the dust appears with two different lenses (15-30 sigma, 24-50 nikon) on exactly the same place.

I checked the CCD and that looked completely clean. Would dust on the CCD also get sharper with smaller aperture?

For example see: http://root.cern.ch/~rdm/dusts.jpg

The big speck is clearly visible, there are three smaller specks that disappeared in the reduction step.

Cheers, Fons.

Hi Fons,

Since the sensible part of the CCD (focus plane) is about 1mm behind its surface, the specks will appear with more punctual light source (smaller aperture). Yes it is possible that the speck is on the CCD. In your, case it looks to be the problem.

The speck is very big. It will be in the lower left of the CCD when you look to it. Try to find it but do not touch until you are sure of the technique to remove it. Get the procedure to lock up the mirror and the CCD swab for this.

Regards,

David

Hey everyone! Don't worry about all this stuff. If the guy wants to return his camera because of dust, let him. It's a problem with all interchangeable lens SLR's, and the S2 is no better or worse in this regard than any other. If he's happier with the D60, let him be. The S2 has higher resolution, so perhaps that's the reason he's seeing dust specs.

Hi Fons,

After thinking about your question and doing an other test on my S1 (since two months), I found a lot of dusts on my CCD (huge specks). I had almost none before. I think it appears after using a bad lens. I did a post on "Cleaning S1, S2 CCD" thread on this.

Anyway, I got red of most of it with can air and will get CCD swabs in case. Be carefull to clean the tips of the can by bursting away a few times and keep the can vertical to prevent from spitting liquid gaz on any parts of the camera. This is liquid nitrogen or CO2 and get killing cold when it spit on a surface which could crack the protective CCD glass.

Apart from this, everything is back usable. fiew !

Regards,

David

P.S. Read the "Cleaning S1, S2 CCD" thread to know about my experience and other owners.

Hi David,

after a good night sleep, I took this morning out my good old Dust-Off and went carefully over the CCD. Specks gone! Last night I did try a rubber ball air blower, but this is surely not strong enough to dislodge the dust.

Cheers, Fons.
