G2 AF - a joke?

Will,

Thanks for your effort at trying to put the G2 bashers in their place. I came to this forum with the hopes of becoming a better photographer and learning more about my cameras. And the majority of people in this forum have done just that!

It is obvious to me there are several people who were either unhappy with their purchase because they did not understand the camera and it's limitations, or are just one of those consumers that have nothing better to do then complain.

To the Bashers!

I would like to say for the record to all the bashers out there (IMHO of course) that if you do not have constructive comments, please take your opinions elsewhere. This forum was not designed for people like you and you just detract from the people who a truly trying to learn and improve.

It is one thing to complain about a problem and propose valid solutions to correct it. It is anothing thing completely when you make personal attacks and consistently whine about the same issue over and over again.

I have read the solutions on how to correctly set my shots so the AF is not a problem. Works great for me. Spend a little less time complaining and a little more learning and you will have a much better, less stressful life!

Once again Thanks to all the positive people out there and their help!

The thing about this type of thread is that it is an opportunity for people of dubious intentions to just come in and pig out on a camera (could be G2 or some other camera) bash just for the fun of it.

You got me. I admit it, I have no life and my only source of happiness comes from trying to make you feel bad about your camera.

Yes, I've e-mailed them to you through your website. I don't yet know how to post image files to this forum.
Mike
Could you please post some of the skateboard and soccer pictures.

Kristian
The irony of all this for me is that most all of my G2 images were
sharply focused, even at my sons soccer games and his
skateboarding. Using manual mode, continuous focus and high rate
frame drive resulted in series of shots that would equal or better
my Nikon 801 35mm gear in terms of sports shots. I was actually
VERY surprised at the results.

You have been unsuccessful in making me feel bad about my G2. Since you have admitted what you intensions are you can hit the road now.

It is pathetic that you have no life hope you find one and soon. Perhaps you can find a life in another forum .

I will keep my G2.

You read too much in to it.
Are you a mind reader? I know what I read ;-))
BTW Willie, who made you the official defender of the G2?
Are you like that other guy, making things up? (umm, lemmee check my notes...uh no, ummm no, ummm...).

That's your problem right there. Hate is not healthy. Remember your own advice about taking things too seriously ;-))

BTW, how is the Minolta forum these days ;-))
Will, nothing on this planet is worse then the Minolta forum. I stopped posting and even visiting it for about 6 months! We have a d7 here, and it makes the G2 look like a camera made in heaven! When ever I or any one for that matter ever said anything even remotely negative about the d7, every d7 owner and their mother came out to attack the person and afterwards would go on other forums and cry about it and email Phil and complain how unfairly thier forum is attacked. That forum has about 20 folks that make you Will look like Officer friendly. They add a new meaning to hostility. I have never in all my years on various BBS, message boards, and forums on the web ever met a bunch of bigger cry babies, and hypocrites! That forum has been the cause of more banning then any other forum! Now it's a ghost town because nobody wants to post there in fear they may get banned for getting some one mad. But you knew that didn't you : )

Will it ever end? Will, humor is not part of your life? Do you take everything so literally? The context of my reply was not to take things so seriously, the name of the thread, G2 AF, A Joke? Don't fall in the trap of pulling quotes out of context to support your own personal view. My little ending, like it or not, was intended as a joke, just like this thread, just like the AF of the G2. Here is what we do. We talk about digital cameras. It's a small part of our life, not life or death. We will not all agree with each other! One should be able to distingush sarcasim from actual hate. One should not be talking all this so seriously.

Hi Bob,
... He thinks he is a
camera reviewer.
How so? However he seems to be a very humourous guy. He made my

day when i read his remarks about the Minolta forum/people here in this thread...

But reviewer? So far i know he is responsible for some pornosites (i.g. shemalecentral.com etc.) Just make a DNIC research.
This explains at least why he owns a lot of cameras.

Don't know what you are referring to here. An example would be...

What? That the AF of the G2 is a joke or that you are only joking about the AF of the G2 being a joke??

One can take that to mean different..... I'm sure you know ;-))

I was getting more than my fair share of fuzzy pics until I turned off the continuous focus mode. Single focus works fine most of the time as long as you give the camera a chance to focus by using the half-press activation. The method I prefer is to lock focus and exposure on the subject, then compose the frame, then shoot. Using this method the G2 can be thought of as "SLR-like" and will give consistantly good shots. They key here is to know what the camera will do BEFORE pressing the shutter. In other words spend some quality time with the owner's manual and LEARN HOW TO USE THE CAMERA. As others have already stated, the G2 is most definitely NOT a point-and-shoot camera and someone who is not familiar with it will not take very good pictures. Period.

I found the g2 to be one of the easiest camera's to learn how to use, and one of the easiest to use. No rocket science here, nothing to learn or master, by all respects it's every bit a P&S. The problem I had with the G2 was it did NOT focus on what I wanted to focus on. Sure I knew how to get around that and MAKE IT focus on what I wanted, but all that simply took more time and took away from the picture taking experience. I did not find the AF as responsive as other camera's. Call me old fashion, call me lazy, but I prefer the camera to actually focus on what I want it too, not the object before it or behind it or next to it : ))

What good is continuous focus for? I've played around with cameras with this feature, and thought it might get faster shots. I recently ordered a G1 but haven't received it yet.

I'm not expecting it to be magically in perfect focus 100% of the time, but perhaps it will at least speed up focusing using the camera in the way you just described- still using half-press activation, compose, then shoot.

He also posts reviews Andreas. Actually. when he is behaving,
I kind of like the guy. When he gets on one of these rants,
he is just like Gonzo on drugs. He is doing it for our own good
according to him. I forget what he said about the Minolta forum

most of what he writes anyway. His point on this day seems to
be that the 5000 is a POS, but we admit that. Why don't
you Canon people admit that the G2 is also? Come to think of it,
you are right. He is funny!

Will you understand about as good as the AF works on the G2!

I was only joking about the way I ended my post. You can't be that mentally challenged can you? If you are I'm really very sorry, and I will try to explain things more on your level next time.

Ok let's just say that for a non-photographer it's not a P&S camera. :) Yes, anyone with any photographic experience can figure the camera out easily but I haven't yet had a novice take one really good shot with my G2.

As for the focus - I always leave the focus zone in the center spot and forget about the left and right zones. It's too hard to remember where I left all the settings from one session to the next so I just leave it alone. I get much better, predictable results. It's just never been a real problem. Maybe there's a quality control issue here since some experienced users can never seem to get a good focus at all and others have NO trouble. If the manual focus weren't such a joke I'd use it exclusively but it almost takes 3 hands to use it! What kind of moron designed that thing? Pathetic.

use, and one of the easiest to use. No rocket science here, nothing

So far my G2 has been able to capture sports shots (long focus, bright conditions); macro; portrait; animal shots in focus (now there is a fast moving subject.

I've read all the AF problems and have found none thus far. I know that I practice at reaching the "halfway" point for the shutter. If you do NOT press hard enough, then you inadvertently do NOT lock the focus and will create problems.
