Hi

I m new in digital photography and I would like to know what are the basic for taking pictures at night and also the best settings for a coolpix 990

Jocelyn,

The best results will be accomplished with your 990 on a tripod. Drop the ISO to 100 or 200 for the least amount of noise. Disable the flash and shoot away...
Am sure someone else will add if I have forgotten something...

Well, actually there are quite some noise in the origianl because of the long exposure and high tempreture. I use photoshop to correct most of the noise. It's quite simple. Just take another pix using the same setting but with lens cap on. Then copy the black image onto night shot. Choose difference in layer option. So the noise will be substracted from the original shot.

Good Luck

I agree with Rick. I usually stick with ISO 100, to minimize the noise. A tripod is essential. Two other things: (i) make use of the self-timer (press the shutter twice for a shorter, 3-second delay) and manual focus; and, (ii) turn on the "shot confirmation lamp" (so you know when those long exposures are done, if you're standing in front of the camera!).

The 990 takes amazing pictures at night -- especially if it's cool outside. (As with any current consumer-level CCD, the noise becomes much more noticable at higher temperatures...)

Cheers,
Courtney.

Well, here is a 990 shot from my hotel room in San Francisco.

Sorry, I'm not at home, so I don't have any data on camera settings...

Just curious, what's the 2 parallel lines above? From an aircraft?
