All of the US’s Armed Forces were present at an airshow I attended this weekend.

This is my first attempt at using a circular polarizer filter.

The photo is unedited.

I am a little disappointed at the sharpness of the girls faces.

thanks...actually, I have an FL-40 and frame. It was a very sunny day.

Are you saying that fill flash would make a difference on a bright day? I did not even pack my flash for the day.

Yes! In fact I tend to use flash even more on bright days if/when people are in my finder. Take a good look at your pic of the girls. See anything odd? No, not the apparent softness, but the eyes. The eyes are what we call "dead." Because your main light (sun/sky) is overhead, it casts awful black shadows over/into the girls eye sockets. The result is evident. Now, even your pop-up flash would have helped here. It would have opened up their eyes and given life to their faces again. I use flash fill constantly. Try it, you'll like it! Regards, Jim N'AZ

Do you think the combo of my FL-40 and built in flash would be too much fill flash for sunny days?

I am heading to another airshow this weekend and will give it a try.

Thanks...after looking...you are right...a close-up really shows the problem.

I do have a couple questions:

About how far can I effectively use fill flash on sunny days? I have a FL-40 and bracket.

On the below image, I was about 25 feet away and the sun was behind them. Do you think it would have removed the shadows?

What do I need to watch out for in using fill flash on sunny days?

Sure. Your FL40 will do nicely for fill in the situation you describe. Don't worry about over exposure via fill in these conditions. When you use the FL40 via TTL, 25 feet is not unrealistic at all. ANY light that you can get out there and into the shadows will be a help to you. I would shoot in these very contrasty settings by using low contrast in your menu settings too. Regards, Jim N'AZ
