thank god the 5d mk II rumours are starting to calm down after the furore of the 22nd, my problem is this, i work in a camera shop in newcastle england and i have had loads of people coming in asking about the 5d mkII, looking to me to provide them with the holy grail, 'when is it coming out' they ask i say 'i dont know', they get annoyed quoting dpreview. I'm not saying im not excited about any future camera but i beg you if you dont have any concrete evidence dont make up lies about a camera, dpreview has become saturated with rumours and counter rumours it is detracting from what the site should be about, photography and equipment. Also it seems to be full of people snipeing at each other, this isnt a who knows most competition, its a community. Sorry for the rant, ps i recently bought a 5d and have been using bowens lighting and i am astounded at the quality of the results, for people wanting higher iso capability firstly invest some time with your flash gear, read strobist, and dont pixel peep!!! enjoy your craft!!!

Good God, If it wasn't for the rumours there wouldn't be anything posted here. Since this place went away from photography and went to strickly gear it's gone downhill (And Accelerating Fast). Pretty quick the 5Dmk2/3D/4D/1Dmk3n will be out and the next batch of rumours will start.....

Let the Games begin....

I saw how it started, how some people started to talk completely from their own speculation of the next 5D and before you know they baptised it gave it a name, a few month later it was assumed to be a reality. let's make this clear :

there I*S* N*O* 5*D*I*I it is all full complete fantasy from this forum. period.

dont say you dont know, say you talked to canon rep and there isnt one coming out. if you say you dont know, then they will keep coming back, if you say there isnt a version 2, they will leave you alone.

If your main objective is to sell cameras...then you should be happy about the rumours.

You have a potential customer in front of you.....make the most of it! Instead of complaining, use some creative initiative....I am sure your boss will appreciate that.

Make sure they don't leave the store without buying something and also get their name on a list so that when the 5D replacement comes out you can give them a call to be first on the waiting list.....

And speaking from a retailer's position myself, you could not have given better advice on how to handle this type of situation.

First off - no - no one really knows WHAT Canon has planned for the 5D - obviously. But, SOMETHING will come out, that's for sure. The 5D will receive an upgrade, same as all of Canon's (and other manufacturers') digicams have. It may not be called the 5D II, or even the 6D, but it will undoubtedly have a replacement at some point in the near future.

If it were me, I would use all of these customer interactions to build future purchases, not to "drive them away" by blaming it on some online rumor mill.

Obviously again, the OP should not lie to his customers, but, take advantage of all that interest, and let those people know that they will be contacted (or something) if and when anything is announced on the replacement for the 5D. Set up a contact sheet for anyone coming in, but do something man!

In these hard economic times, it's best to try and do as much as you can to get customers to part with their money on your goods, especially when they are so eager to part with that money, rathen then driving them off with your frustation at their interest and premature questioning of a "possible" new release.

Get email addresses from them, put them on a mailing list, whatever. Use the opportunity to your advantage as a retailer. After all, if they don't buy the replacement from you because they felt you were unhelpful, they're simply going to go out and buy it from some other retailer when the 5D's replacement finally is released. ;)

Honestly, what do you have to use? Or maybe this was just another post to stir up more controversy? In either case, turn it into a positive.

Good luck.

well as i work only part time for the large retail store i would advise people to keep their eyes open to any successor, i feel that there is an opertunity to sell new cameras yes... but the stores policy is to sell whatever is in stock, we are not allowed to back order without full payment and there is no scheme to inform people of any new products

in fact the whole store is degrading, we no longer get trained on products so it is down to me to use my personal knowledge to convey my reccommendations to the customer. I'd say 80 % of the customers we get come in to handle the cameras and then they buy off the internet. We sinply cannot match the prices online. Hence the company has closed many branches and got rid of some of the most experienced staff. I'm lucky because i freelance as my first form of income, but recently the store sacked the assistant manager who was the corner stone of all the store operations. its only a matter of time before we go under.

it is sad because i have helped many people in understanding digital photography, and i have given impartial advice honostly. With the degradation of the local camera store i feel that forums have become peoples main point of learning, so comon people leave the stupid rumours and start giving the good advice i am accustomed to.

Ahh, you work for Jessops!

You sound like a decent sort of bloke - unfortunately Jessops has got rid of most people like you and are now in a "nose dive". WHE was probably the single most critical factor in their downfall - pity really.

Hope that YOU survive.

haha yes i work for jessops, i think im part of a select few who work for the company that actually love photography, ive seen many start working for them all enthusiastic about the craft only to be disheartened along the way, if anyone from jessops hq is listening you need to concentrate on photography not bloody add ons and insurance, people want decent advice from people who are inspired, we are not robots, we are people who like photography.... Anyone from jessops in this forum, i think we need to rebel!!!

I can see how forums can cause a lot of problems for store employees. People read forums and get all worked up about some unfounded rumor and then go to a store and expect the store clerks to know all the inside information on the rumored camera.

Just try to imagine being a store clerk and having all the idiots who actually believe the rumors constantly pestering you for more information and release dates. Look at how bad the rumor mill is here on these forums. How would you like to have that in your face everyday?

The store clerks not only have to deal with that but also with the same stupid and redundant questions like many of the ones posed here on the forums.

If you want to see what I mean, just hangout in a camera store for a little while and listen to the things people say and ask.

Lol.....all the idiots who frequent the stores are potential customers. Sort of puts us all in the same boat. Nice to know the clerks might be thinking...Oh Oh Look out..... here comes another idiot wanting to buy a camera! No wonder the customers vote with their feet and go to the internet shops.

Over the years I have bought my cameras from courteous staff who have been prepared to put up with all my many questions.....mainly to reassure me that I am making a good choice as I decide to buy a camera/ lens/lighting. The process of buying usually takes several months for many people...they don't usually just walk into a store with no idea and buy a 5D or 1ds MK111.

In the past most photographers got their information about equipment from knowledgeable clerks, magazine articles, trade shows or friends advise....now we have forums with input from rank beginners, trolls and fortunately some very clever cookies.

Clerks are paid to attend and service customers.....don't like it.....YKWYCD.

I personally would pay a bit more for a camera from a nice person.....but appreciate that it won't be that way for long.
