I was told yesterday by an Olympus technician that the reason my PC does not recognize my new E-510 is because the camera does not support Windows XP Media Edition. That seems a bit odd to me, so before I take it at face value and go to a card reader (therefore apparently no way to upgrade firmware) or some other method, is anyone else out there running Media Edition and run into this problem? I'd really like to be able to connect the camera to the computer if there is a reasonable way to do it. Thanks.

"Media Edition" shouldn't have anything to do with it. Media Edition just has some media related additions. The underlying operating system is no different from standard XP.

You might make sure you are up to date on XP patches/updates, etc. Double check your cable. Try it on another computer if at all possible.

Something else is going on.

As I said in the other thread, I don't see how Media Edition makes a difference.

Making sure XP is up to date is a good idea, too.

I'm running media edition and my Oly software recognizes my E-1, E-510, and E-3 just fine. Your info source is full of it.

Thanks again. I've tried all the suggestions and get a blank. The cable seems to be working since my Device Manager listed the E-510 while the Olympus guy was trying a work-around. Re: the Administrative thing, my standard answer I get under Camera Version Information is "Unable to detect camera -- check if the camera is correctly connected to the PC. And Microsoft tells me my operating system is up to date.

that doesn't answer the question, are you logged on as an administrator? Start-> Control Panel-> User Accounts should tell you.

At the moment the camera displays "One Momemt", Windows has to load a device driver (and thus you see the new hardware found, etc. messages). Since the Master doc makes a point of the administrator requirement, I suspect you should make sure you are.

Many (most?) of us are always logged on as admin, therefore never experience this.

Thanks again. I tried shutting down my firewall and virus protection: same results. I am logged on as Computer Administrator, so that doesn't seem to be the problem either. When I click on the E-510 link under device manager, the wizard comes up, but says "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)." The when it says to reinstall drivers, I get the message that no software for the drivers is available, or something like that. I'll keep plugging along. Think it's worth going back to Olympus and see if a different technician can help?

deleting the E-510 device, and starting over?

This sounds like a Windows hickup.

Deleted the E510 from device manager yesterday with the Olympus tech with no change. Also the Media Center suggestion changed nothing. What next? ; (

Good catch, Denny. Let's hope it works.

And if it doesn't, try a different PC. It doesn't need Master loaded to recognize the E510. You should get the "Found New Hardware" in the corner, followed by "E510". If no one you know has a PC, ask if you can plug it into a show room demo somewhere.

that I'm starting to understand why Olympus might say they don't support it.

Sounds like you need to start dealing with Microsoft (or your computer manufacturer, since Microsoft seems to disavow support for Media Center, too), since this appears to be a computer issue. The next question is, will a USB disk (or card reader) work, either (since it's the same thing as the camera to Windows)?

XP gets “confused” when dealing with USB devices. The first time I dealt with this was when someone sent me a laptop that wouldn’t recognize a thumb drive. I’ve also had my system do it with an external hard drive. After working fine for awhile I’d plug it in and the computer would not allow me access to it. I’ve dealt with this by going to Device Manager and deleting the USB controllers and then restarting Windows.

Note

if you have a lot of devices plugged in I’d unplug them and load them one at a time after the restart. Also it you have a USB mouse you’ll lose access to that until after a restart.

Thanks everybody. I'll hook it up next week to my daughter's computer while I'm there visiting and see if her PC will recognize it. That would at least eliminate the camera itself as the source of the problem. Cheers and Happy Holidays!
