This is my first shot from the d300. I just sold off entire lineup of pro canon lenses and a couple 30ds and am very very happy with my decision. Keep in mind this is merely a quick snapshot as I did not have time to go to the studio and shoot.

30x90cm strip light camera left. small chimera softbox to the right. I will have to reshoot with more climbing chalk in the air.

Well certainly something very different for this forum. I like it a lot.

Glad you like the camera & welcome to this not always so welcoming forum.

That was 'some' decision!

what made you do that.. a lot of investment in kit..sold it to a friend and got some good return I hope.

I had an aberation a few weeks ago and 'nearly' did the opposite with a 40D as I felt the difference in image quality would not be that great but save some money for at least one L lens. However the losses for my other stuff was a step too far.

I'm very pleased with the D300 and get to keep my expensive flash and VR lens I like.

What conclusions have you reached since changing.. I'm curious :)

...somebody points out all that "noise" around your neck?

Very nice. Well lit except, as you note, the chalk doesn't quite show up enough. Nice conversion as well. Did you go with the Nikon conversion or use some other technique to convert to B&W?

I'm really looking forward to doing some B&W work with my new D300. Personally, I'm getting a little bored with all the "vivid" color shots that many seem to be gravitating toward. Nice to see some serious and creative work posted here. Keep it up.

The main reason for switching over was autofocus. My 30Ds were brutal at focusing in low light even with "L" lenses. I was also not satisfied with the sharpness of canon's glass for the most part. The 24-70 was great at 70mm but at the 24mm end of things it was disappointing. The 70-200 2.8 non IS also seemed to hunt in low light. A lot of the shooting I do is for electronica Djs and no matter what setup I used to try and shoot, focus was slow, if there at all. The 8fps is also huge for me as I shoot many skiers/snowboarders/skateboarders and blend the shots together. With 5fps I miss missing parts of the tricks. I first started out with a d70, but switched to canon because I was going to go to photography school and they had a large bank of canon lenses. I ditched out on that idea and learned on my own through assisting commercial photographers and ended up buying every lens on my own. The important thing is that I am back in action with Nikon and couldn't be happier.

I didn't lose a ton of money on my gear as lenses don't appreciate too much. The bodies were both well used too so I didn't ask much for them.

Welcome to the forum - you're now a Nikonian! This is a place where you can learn a bunch from talented photographers. Nice shot - you fancy Adam Sandler a bit eh!?

and did wonder what made you switch to canon, but it was your bottom line to switch after all since your talent was still there regardless of the gear.

cant wait to see more of those incredible skii shots again ! hopefully our part of southwest will get good snow, kinda been low so far this season. Just remember that 51AF points and its groups is a different beast to tame:)

Looks good. I agree on more chalk. And also make sure your glasses are straight :).
Nice shot.

More Chalk is in order. Getting my glasses straightened today haha. I didnt realize how crooked they were. I hit my head climbing the other night and didnt really notice.

Thanks Devendra, I am surprised you remember me! Very flattering. I have a shoot scheduled for Sunday afternoon with some snowboarders from a local shop. It is a new location so we arent sure what the results will be like. Expect tons of ski shots this season. As crappy as the canon gear was it was the tool used to pay the bills and afford a bunch of new lighting equipment.
