I got into an accident few weeks ago. My 4 month old car was totaled and looking for a replacement in few months. I was talking about the E-3 with my wife and she gave me an offer. She said we can buy the E-3 w/ 12-60 and 50-200 as long I won't buy a car until next year (Nov 08). If you were in my shoes which one would you choose? :P

My brains is crunching as I type this haha

See if she will negotiate a camera and a bike instead of a car. Then you can get in shape, while biking around taking interesting photos ;)

It sounds like she has more sense than you! lol... I know my wife has way more sense than I do, great for a reality check every once in a while :)

Kind Regards

and it says web designer in California. Well lets face it web design can happen at home via the net. You then combine walk/bike with hire cars for the longer trip and you have a great camera, a fitter lifestyle and you are doing your thing for global warming. Seems win-win to me. LOL

Can I get your wife to talk to my wife?

What on earth do you guys pay for cars in the US? I couldn't buy a half decent, less than 10 years old, roadworthy car, for the price of an E3, 12-60mm and 50-200mm in Oz. In fact, I wouldn't even consider buying a car at that price in Oz, unless it was for a demolition derby.

Cheers

... get one of these ;)

it cost US $200 more than a new ZD50-200mm ;)

go kids too? no problem... side cars are cheap as well ;)

but on second thought - you can't have accidents in one of these ;(

I think it probably says a lot for Oz car condition/price more than anything else in that case.

let me see. I may be a bit out on the prices (in fact - I haven't a clue!), but aren't we looking at (in the UK)
E3 £1100
12-60 £700
50-200 £800

so thats £2600

Dear me ... you can get a VERY nice clean, fairly low mileage family car for that here that. And I'm talking about finding a good one and apart from the number plate, you'd have a job telling it apart from a brand new one if it was well looked after by a private owner.

I'm talking about something around AU$4000 (the original price point). At that price point it's basically going to be a pile of junk, roadworthy possibly, but still a heap of rubbish.

Well do you need a car? Are you buying the E-3 for business use, or will it essentially be a toy? Which is essential? If you buy the E-3 are you going to end up buying a car anyway?

interesting! I just picked up the 50-200 for $765 then I get a $150 rebate on top of that in the US, where the dollar has been dropping in value.

2600 that would be about $5200 here in the states right? You could get a nice used car here for that, at least in the midwest.

Now THATS funny!

How many cameras do you need to photograph people with their arms up
in the air reaching for Jesus?

TBO, it sounds like you can't afford the camera if you have to choose
between one or the other, and your entire posting history reads a
little...odd. Go re-read your old post.

there should be a good chunk of the initial cost available for the next car.
Questions tho
Was it new?
Was it insured?

What about replacing it w a less expensive model/trim level? then put the ballance toward the camera?

If there's already a car in the family, then maybe the second car is a luxury anyway?

New cars here go for around $15K up past $50K

Got my 8yo, high milage minivan from a dealer for around 4K, a running car can be had for around $1000

I'm not sure what you mean by 'pile of junk' or 'heap or rubbish'

Some would argue that some makes of cars can be described as such - even new. Is that what you are saying?

Or are you saying that at $4000, whatever car it is will have been abused, dented, dirtied, engine screwed etc etc to the point of being junk?

Because the latter certainly wouldn't be the case around here.

In the US, even $3000 will be enough to get a decent car. 3 years ago I won on ebay a 1996 Honda Accord with 90,000 miles, with everything minus sun roof and leather seats for $3600. Now with 135,000 miles it is running as well as the day I had it picked up, and over the years we have spent perhaps $800 in maintenance.

But to get back to the topic, obviously you need a new camera as those Canons do not qualify as such ;)

$4000 will buy you a nice Toyota Corolla that gets 40 miles per gallon for the next 100,000 miles with no major problems here in the US. It's because everyone is always upgrading to huge pickups and SUVs. Utterly frivolous. A new Corolla is only 10x the price of the E-3.

Cheers, Seth
