What was your first camera? SLR or DC and what was it?

Nice to see you smiling Mark :-)) Well done.

First camera was a Yashica GX45 in 1969.

My favorite equal's of all time and still are, the 35mm SLR's 1976 Canon EF, 1986 Canon T90 and the Nikon FE. Still got them and probably always will.

Digital has to be what I use now. Sony CD-1000 because it gets closer than anything I have ever seen with what I put on the front :-))

All the very best Mark.

Now your going back.....way back! Well, I got my first camera a Fuji STX2 in 1978 and still have it today, though it hasn't been used for over 1 year. My first digicam was the Sony P50 which I passed over to my daughter and now own the F707. btw..I'm still useing my first tripod a Velbon VGB-3DX from 1978 and only just today bought myself a smaller tripod with quick release head to fit into my camera sack (back pack). I've uploaded a pic of my old gear at pbase if your interested.

I was talking with several in a group today. We were talking aoout
photography and everyone seemed to enjoy discussing which was our
very first camera owned. Two had never owned an SLR a few told me
their first camera was a Poloroid Swinger. lol

So, please take a moment and, let us all know what was your first
camera, an SLR or Digicam?

And, which camera model was it.... if you can remember?

Last, if you've had several cameras.... which was your favorite?

It will be interesting to know.

Thank you,
Mark J.

When i was knee high to a grasshopper i had a dinky little 110 but dont remember what it was. I do remember i left it everywhere and it got stolen or something.

But my very first camera that had any meaning was a Nikkormat FT that was given to me from my idol (my uncle). I believe the time frame back them was aprox 72/73

From then on my visions were pretty well focused on Nikon products and i later on purchased a FM and FE body and various lenses and a MD-12 motordrive and other accessories. 8 years ago i was finally able to buy the camera of my dreams and that was a Hasselblad 501CM. My blad would be my favorite and thats probably because of the cost(i handle it with kid gloves) but its the least used now because of the cost of processing.

For me digital was the only way to go without worrying about 'wasting' costly film on everyday explorial shoots.

Now, my Sony is the most used camera of my collection and im pondering eBaying my old Nikon gear.
It will be interesting to know.

Thank you,
Mark J.

Well, I started out with a FED-3 rangefinder brick, but that's been looong time ago. Now I have a fully mechanical SLR Yashica FX3-2000 with a set of lenses, a Voigtlander Bessa (1929 6x9 MF) and a camera that I use to increase the appreciation for technological progress (Zenit-12)...

And of course a Sony 707 :)

Canon EOS (can't remember exact model of EOS)... It was stolen from my hotel room in Paris in 1993. I got a few good years of use out of it, but I think I'm still angry about it. : P

A Zenith M 35mm SLR made in Russia.
then Fujica ST-801, Olympus OM 1, OM 2,
Nikon F801, F3, F5 (as a gift)

Now, Sony DSC-S50 and F707

When I was 3 or 4 I got a pink plastic camera, with Barbie stickers on it...I filled it up and then opened the film and ruined it. My requests for more film were met with "When you're old enough to take care of the camera..."

I went on a trip to Washington DC when I was 6, and got a panoramic camera for that...still have it but haven't used it in forever.

Have gone through several disposable cameras for every summer vacation with my grandmother to Victoria, or Santa Barbara, or wherever.

The S70 is my first "real" camera, and my favorite of all of them. I've become pretty attached to it, (his name is bob :-)).

I don't remember what my age was, but at some point in grade school we made shoebox cameras. Took photo sensitive paper and we all went in a dark closet and attached it to the back of the inside of a shoe box. then we taped the lids on and put a pin prick hole at the other end. we all walked out with our fingers over the holes until we found a nice subject to photograph. then we removed the finger for whatever time we guessed was right. Amazing range of shutter speeds for that camera! we later developed them and had a lot of really good pictures in the class believe it or not. And amazingly, no BFS, no DLS, no PPE, and what a bargain!. lol. CindyD

My first camera was some snapshot Vivatar camera. Then I started to "get into" photograhy. So I consider my Minolta X-700 as my first camera. I "got out" of photography due to lack of funds. Since starting to take up photography again, I bought a DSC-S85. I should have waited a couple of months for the 707 or something a little better but that's alright. I still consider myself new to photography so I will get a better camera when my skills advance. After all, I take the pictures not the camera!

I purchased a Pentax S1a in 1963 at a US Army PX in Stuttgard Germany. Had interchangeable lens but no lightmeter. The lightmeter purchased separately, mounted in the hotshoe and connected to the shutter speed dial. This camera and the Pentax HV were predecessors to the Spotmatic. Used Pentax Screw mount lens. The only SLR prior to this model was the Nikon F. There may have been a Contax or Practia SLR as well...but I can't remember. Back when Kodachrome was the real king.

I can't help but smile at the thought of someone's first camera being digital! I wish... but I started young with some old Kodak 35mm that my dad bought overseas when he was in the Army. Then I bought a point & shoot (oh yeah! it was one of those with flash bulbs too... funky 4 sided ones!) which I think was a 126 (?) but not sure.

When I entered high school I bought my first 35mm SLR, my Minolta SRT200. I loved that one. Always had a point & shoot to carry along with me, probably at least a half dozen different models of those because I didn't ever like them! Then one day (1997) I was sitting in Tiger stadium and noticed something fell from the camera into the screen. It was rotted out foam from the seals. It was ruined. I still feel bad about that. Couldn't get it fixed so I bought a new X-700 which I never got the hang of, but used for a while & still have it.

Then came digital... first was the Sony CD1000 and now the S85 which is my point & shoot today.

Sorry, my explanation was a little long winded. Thanks for indulging me. I think my favorite will always be my old Minolta SLR but I don't miss film for one single minute!!!

My first camera was a Sony Mavica FD91. I just sold it on eBay to help pay for my F707.

It was a great camera for me, although it didn't perform too well in low light. My favorite thing about it was the 14x optical zoom, and that's one thing I missed when I got the F707.

After using the F707 for just a few days, I picked up the FD91 to say goodbye to it before I boxed it up for eBay. It felt so bulky and odd after using the F707. Even the controls which I had become quite accustomed to after 3 years felt out of place compared to the F707.

A major upgrade for me, and I'm very happy with the DA.

Remember the BROWNIE camera....That was it for me. Things have sure changed for the better but that camera, the 'Brownie', was a winner at that time.

Okay, now I know you are going to laugh... but my first camera was a box camera. You took the pictures and then sent it in to be processed. They sent you the prints and a new camera. It was made of cardboard. My first real camera was a Kodak Retina from my father. I don't think it was an SLR but I am not sure. I was in my early teens when I got it. The other one was when I was very young. Ann

Ann, I think that Retina was what I had! I could NOT think of the name of it but that sounds so familiar. Mine was also from my father. I remember it had like a little door over the lens that you had to pop open to shoot with it. I wish I knew where it was now, but I'm such a packrat it can't be far away :)
