Samsung not likely Pentax's Savior

2002-American Airlines, around $1 a share, looked good to me, priced
any lately?
Where do they stand now?
Now is a good time to buy Samsung, or in my case, buy
more.

John,

So you think Pentax's Imaging (DSLRs) divisions's $8M LOSS over the three year period of 2005-2007 is a shining example for profitability? They didn't and don't need any help over the long haul? Neither did Konica/Minolta...

An $8M loss over a three year period doesn't me as a real cash cow business, capable of pumping in tons of money into R&D. Ignore the fact that Nikon had net income from its imaging division of $800M over the same 3 year period. I guess Pentaxians think that Nikon can earn 100X what Pentax lost over a 3 year period and believe it has no impact.... Only on a Pentax forum can it be so...

My Ritz Camera still has Nikon D40/40X boxes stacked up to my nose, BTW. But I think they might even have one K10D in stock! :) Pentax is shipping more DSLRs, but is it enough to pump the kind of cash into the investments Pentax needs to make in order to be competitive (I have beaten this horse to death in another thread, but am having a hard time letting a lob ball go sailing over home plate!)?

Nikon, Canon and Sony appear to be asleep at the wheel, given all their recent announcements and those that will likely be close on their heels. Pentax on the other hand has matched their announcements with the.... K100S, which shows me a clear path to "upgrade" from my K10D - or perhaps not.... And the Pentax lens roadmap - looks great - now if the lenses would actually showed up the front of my camera!!! Where can I sign up for some Pentax kool-aid? :)

The purpose of my original post was to point out that while there have been those on this forum who have speculated that Samsung would "bring something to the table" that would help Pentax, that has not happened, and it does not appear likely to happen in the near future.

I suppose Samsung's expertise in consumer electronics, marketing muscle, technology leadership, proven ability to manage short product lifecycles that involve huge investments, and distribution network, etc. mean nothing to Pentax. What can Samsung teach Pentax which had a cumulative loss of $8M over three years in its core DSLR business. Not a thing, I suppose... I think I see Nikon, Sony & Canon waving the white flag now... :)

Aha, it was OLED that Samsung was on then. ...Chicken or egg.

Interesting about Canon and SED though, I didn't know they were involved...it's scary how behind the scenes they are these days...they're starting to get like Sony.

That's kind of depressing. I've been waiting on SED for a while to replace crummy LCD monitors....if Canon's behind it, there will be a long long wait until they're anywhere near cost effective, and with that turbulence, it's still going to take a LONG time to be mainstream. It was supposed to have killed LCD TV's 6 months ago :) Any time there's only one exclusive company for that stuff it's usually either in the "elite back room" at theater stores for years (collecting dust), or it's a "new fad" that dies quickly.

That means when my lovely grille CRT breaks, I'm going to be stuck with yet another LCD :(

I'm not a fortune teller, so I really don't know what will happen tomorrow, let alone a few years from now, which is why I find such speculation and hand wringing a complete and utter waste of time.

I don't know the stength of the relation between the two companies, but they are different: camera's are part of Samsung Tchwin, not Samsung Electronics.

Speculation may be a waste of time, but people do have to assess where/how they should spend their money. Some friendly banter between people of different opinions is but one way to understand different perspectives and help someone understand what direction they may want to head. Doing a bit of digging on Pentax's website gave me a better idea for the companies overall health, financial situation, etc.

Heck if you really want to conserve time, we could all get off the forum, since some people, such as Ken Rockwell, think the whole forum is full of time-wasting "measurebators" whose opinions don't amount to a hill of beans! :)

Wait beginning 2008, you will know who's the savior :)

Yeh, but it will be cheap as LCD is a very mature technology! Save your money for the next time around.... (or a new camera :-))

The Journey is the Thing

Samsung is not Pentax's savior. The fact you make it sound like
Pentax is in a bind is completely unfounded. Pentax never needed a
savior, they were just bought out by Hoya who is providing full
support now.
Several people from another forum i read have inside
info that Pentax is in the process of finishing up several key items
and are saying a January announcement should be in order.
OK, thats news to me, and interesting... I'd like to backtrack and read those forums. Can you please provide links so that I may read about this? Thanks
Naw, Pentax never was in trouble. They just got themselves an
investor (with connections) which got things rolling. Despite doing
enough of it already, we just have to wait now.

Not cheap enough for a hideously bad technology. They look worse than CRTs, how is that an improvement? :) Give me colors, give me contrast, give me true black level, and a GOOD resolution and I'll be happy :)

I think I still have a year on my full service warranty on my Viewsonic P225f, but I doubt they have replacement parts for them anymore as I believe the tube was Mitsubishi who no longer makes tubes...bye bye contrast.

Ken Rockwell.... rollseyes I thought dirty language was banned on the forums? :)

"Never use a tripod".....words of a genius :)

Last I checked, it's not 2008 yet :)

Besides, I thought it was January they were supposed to announce the new stuff.

What happened to the two all-new DSLR bodies that were to be released
before the end of 2007??

Brand loyalty is a character flaw.

I dredged up this old humor site:
http://blog.bahneman.com//article.php?story=Ken_Rockwell_Facts

The quote of the day:

Before Nikon or Canon releases a camera they go to Ken and they ask him to test them, the best cameras get a Nikon sticker and the less good get a Canon sticker

Once Ken tested a camera, he said I cant even put Canon on this one, thats how Pentax was born.

I was actually shocked when he reviewed the DS and LIKED IT... and it replaced some Nikon for his preferred light walk around camera. It either means the DS was really really good, or really really bad. I noticed he's not touched a single K....I guess Nikon got annoyed at him when he tried the last one :)
